A series of dinner dates and movies, does not a marriage make. Very much to Brian's credit as a handyman on Yelp he gets 21 raving five star reviews to only 5 one star reviews. On single, one off jobs or a series of them he obviously performed well with a great attitude. But for us, only initially, definitely not for longer, more complex projects as was our experience. Thus began our working relationship over weeks and months on one tiny incomplete bathroom remodel and one tiny partial bathroom demolition. Very soon he evidenced a poor and irresponsible work ethic; anger management issues (see his responses to one star reviews); his attitude and conduct spiraled downward from merely being testy to progressively contentious and combative, never in person, only in text exchanges. His attendance on the job site quickly became erratic, sporadic and unpredictable. Many days he did not show up without the courtesy of a text or phone call, even for a week and 2 months. Average work day was 3-3 1/2 hours. On occasion he had valid explanations: a series of mishaps, misfortunes and maladies. With the work delays he asked for an advance which I gladly paid him. As things dragged out and concerned if he could even cover his living expenses I gave him two more without his asking. The first indicator of anger management issues was a response to a clarifying question on a receipt: "why are you questioning me." Next, upon receiving a text of a receipt for a paint purchase I texted back that he picked up exterior semi gloss paint for the interior bathroom. He texted back "I've left", implying he wasn't going back. To his credit he did return for an exchange. He responded to my inquiring about a text receipt which did not show a subtotal, nor sales tax, nor total amount. I asked for the amount of sales tax. "You've lived California longer than I have. You figure it out." The reason was he made purchases for two different clients on one receipt. I texted perhaps it would be better to make two separate purchases. "If you think I'm going to go to Home Depot two times, that's ridiculous." When I passed on a suggestion from the cabinet supplier and the designer at Floor & Decor he accused me of badmouthing him to other vendors, trying to ruin his reputation and business, declaring "this isn't working our." Whereupon he did not return to work for 2 months and ghosted my repeated text inquiries. He did emerge 2 months later confessing " I did not handle that well,". He returned after two months for 5 days at 5 hours daily. He had to fly back East to see his hospitalized mother. Upon his return she immediately and unfortunately passed away and he returned for her funeral. After 2 weeks, over the next 6 weeks I sent weekly texts inquiring if he had a projected ETA. No responses. He did eventually resurface, sending me a text saying that due to the expense and logistics of driving 13 miles beyond the Redlands Home Depot he frequents to Yucaipa he would not be finishing the work despite our having a signed agreement that he himself wrote. His map on Yelp shows his service area extends to the junction of the 10 and 60 freeways 9 miles to the southeast. Now 7 months after my final payment for what became a project only 80% complete he has yet to refund the $150 balance still due me, texting "you'll get it when you get it," Brian prides himself on being a skilled tradesman which the 21 five reviews support. However in his brief few days actually worked he had a near catastrophic, gushing pipe leak; positioned a medicine cabinet at a height grest for a 6' man but not a 5'2" woman; built out a bathtub enclosure niche off center, "well, that's where the studs are"; and his successor found he had applied a band-aide fix to a pin prick water leak in his rough plumbing , adding solder instead of replacing that portion of pipe, the tiny leak still evident; and miswired a GFI outlet with a wall light switch in the ceiling junction box; and the pedestal sink was wobbly because he used short plastic drywall anchors instead of butterfly anchors which spring open behind the drywall and can be tightened. Concluding: Brian is great for one off jobs but not extended complicated projects. This regrettably I can only give Brian what from my experience is a 2 star review. read more

Brian was great! He was recommended by my friend who has also hired him, and I'm glad I took the recommendation. He was somehow able to fit me in promptly because he was already in the area, came over, removed an old chandelier, hung a new one, and repaired the dry wall that was previously damaged and hidden under the old fixture. He also worked around kids, a baby sleeping, etc. He even went out to the hardware store to get us the correct bulbs for the new light. 5-star service. We will hire him again for other jobs. Sometimes you just get lucky. Needed a Handyman for a handful of small projects around the house and reached out to Yelp. They provided me with 5 potential Handymen, and I waited for a response. Well, from the start Brian was the quickest to respond, and from there EVERYTHING went perfectly. His communication was forthright and clear in getting scheduled, he showed up ON TIME, he had a GREAT attitude, did all the Work we had discussed in record time (and even took care of something else that we brought up to him), and his Pricing was MORE then fair (in fact so much so, I paid him more then he even requested). I hired Brian from Marketplace on Facebook, wanted to redo some baseboards and a few small handy man jobs like hanging a couple of fans and patching a small piece of the exterior wall on our master bedroom sliding door. And after initial visit, as he said he was very familiar with installing crown molding, I added this to the list of services I was purchasing with him. Total cost of his services for the entire job ended up being around $1830. Here is my very candid review of his work and his services: PROS: - Very nice deameanor at first - Usually on time or alerting you if he is running late (I am not an early bird, so this was fine with me). - Referred me to a good value store to buy the crown molding and baseboard, and even went to pick it up for us, as they come in 15" length, and he has a truck that was able to accomodate the load. - Responsive in my text to him - Doesn't mind the hard work, even moved furniture to be able to work on the baseboards - Very tidy, puts back things at the end of each work day, or asks if it is ok to leave some tools in the house for practicality purposes, which was completely fine with me. - Agreed to lower his initial bid of $400, after I shared with him that I thought, based on other bids, that he was a bit higher than other handymen. - Able to complete the simple jobs, of installing ceiling fans in 3 rooms. CONS: - Quality of work for the baseboard and crown molding was really sub par. I am attaching pictures to give some color to my feedback. It doesn't appear that Brian knew what he was doing with the baseboards, and he must have never done crown molding before. On the first day of the crown molding, he hired another guy to help him out, and they ended up wasting so much molding that we had to buy 6 extra pieces of 16". for him to complete the job. You can see from the pictures, that Brian doesn't know how to cut a molding corner, same for baseboard. It's not that one ended up a bit crooked, many of them resulted in a similar bad looking corner. The crown molding work was terrible! You can see the cuts from a far (I even had a real estate agent visit my house two weeks ago and she noticed how bad it looks). The cuts are not done correctly, and the caulking was poorly applied everywhere. AIn some places, you can see the gap between the molding and the wall. And Brian was supposed to retouch with paint underneath all the molding so each border would look sharp. He didn't do that. It seems as at the end of the job, Brian wanted to get paid and get out of here. It is my opinion that while he wanted to do a good job, it turned out to be too much for him and he ended up giving up a very sloppy result. - His demeanor changed at the end of the project, when I pointed out the mistakes and flaws of his work. He ended up not being so nice to me after all. CONCLUSION: My fiance wrote a 5 stars review for him on google, and I completely disagree with him. I will not hire Brian again for anything and unfortunately, while I am sure no one will have an issue with simple tasks, I cannot recommend him for baseboard and crown molding work. Which are key to the appearance of a home. I spent $1830 plus the cost of the extra crown molding, and I will have to hire someone to finish the job to my satisfaction. So Brian's prices are not a bargain at all. I will let you be the judge with all the pictures I am posting. read more
