After travelling some 300-plus miles from the SOUTHERN FINGER LAKES of NEW YORK - (CORNING-ELMIRA,…read moreNY) we have NEVER had a "5" or lower review rating. We have experienced an outstanding/ "in tune" / personable / interactive "LADY" named "KRISSY - CHRISSY" always there and "taking care of business" . The food is reasonably priced and....YES , it is very good. Now, they call me the "MAYOR" but that's a self-proclaimed title (politics!!!???). So, for those "REVIEWS" that are less than fair - good - outstanding..."BAH HUMBUG!!!" I / we guess we would NOT be AMERICANS if we didn't cry-cry-cry / complain and find fault...that IS too - too damned easy!!! THANK YOU CRICKET'S - THANK YOU KRISSY / CHRISSY.... Well...I learned quickly that they have a great outdoor area, live music, and even a bocce court. It is very clean inside. Whoever designed the inside did a great job of fitting enough seating using all space, without feeling like you would be sitting on top of each other. I was there on a day in which they had 50 cent wings. 50 cents you ask? Yes, 50 cents. I was amazed. I haven't seen that in a long time. So, then I thought...I wonder how small they are. Ummm...they were not small at all! Nice sized wings, and sauced properly. I hate when places barely put any sauce on their wings, and this place did it the right way, not the wrong way. Prices overall were what you would expect. Nothing over the top by any means, but I have a feeling their specials each night are very popular.

It was 3pm when I walked in, and 30 minutes later after two beers walked out with a full rack, extra sauce. Best thing about the ribs? They have that light char taste that goes right through the meat down to the bone. The girl tending bar was great, took good care of my order, and that order was ready just as the beer went empty, so great service. The Oaks has been right here for many many years, pretty eclectic crowd, but mainly just a joint to enjoy the food, have a drink or a beer, and talk to folks. The inside is a nice mish mash of old photos, art that is more thoughtful than you'd expect, and a long wall length bar, that hits the far wall and becomes a row of booths coming back up the other wall. Plenty of good parking, and through the warm months they got outdoor bands, so, something for everyone. Oh, and it's a good place to just be. If you're alone, or killing time, perfect spot. Seriously. The pic is what I do once I get the ribs all the way back to New Castle, toss in a casserole put in the oven wrapped in foil at @240 degrees for 30-40 minutes, gets them right at perfect.

Rip's Cafe is a bar in Struthers area well known for its Slovak/Polish food especially the "Hunky…read morePlatter." I very randomly discovered this bar while in the area (Youngstown). I was really craving Eastern European food that tastes like home. All of the Eastern European restaurants were closed on Sunday except Rip's. I wasn't expecting much to be honest and really liked my time here. AMBIANCE: Basic dive bar. Humble surroundings. Plenty of TV's at the bar. Dim space. While this ambiance is not usually my cup of tea, I felt very comfortable here. Regulars were very nice and welcoming. FOOD/DRINKS: I ordered a glass of Moscato ($4). The wine brand was Barefoot. I don't drink this tier of wine to be honest. But I understand that dive bars don't stock upscale wine. A glass of wine was good. I ordered a few appetizers - Pirohy (6 pierogis, $6.99), one stuffed cabbage ($8.99), and 2 haluski ($13.98). The food was excellent for a dive bar and in general. I am a very tough critic of the food from my part of the world - Eastern Europe. This food was delicious and well done. It didn't taste frozen, but rather homemade. Everything was well salted and had enough butter. I was especially impressed with haluski and ordered multiple orders. I felt like for appetizers the portions were generous. The bartender mentioned that Hunky Platter ($16.99) is a popular choice. It comes with one stuffed cabbage, three pirohy, and a side of halusky. Essentially, I ordered the same thing but in larger quantity. SERVICE: The service was super friendly considering this is a dive. The bartender ensured I was happy, suggested different dishes, and asked personal questions. It was very pleasant interaction. I'm not a dive gal, but I'll absolutely be returning. The food is absolutely delicious. It's like a hidden gem for quality dinner. I can't wait to experience other menu items next time. Go experience Hunky Platter, you'll love it!

Rip's Hunky Platter was AMAZING! (I couldn't find current menu pics so I've attached them here)read more
