I haves lived her for almost 5 years as of late they have moved in some of the most uncertain characters. Weed smell in the hallway, stolen packages and nothing can ever get resolved. This property has certainly took a turn for the worst. Management has change three times since I have lived her and no explanation has ever been given regarding that. This is the fourth package the deliver person has taken a picture of leaving and all of a sudden the package is gone! you hate to order anything that doesn't involve amazon, because you will never see it! I've been living here for almost 1 year and will never come back their property manager EMILY is awful, she is not helpful doesn't care about her job and is no where to be found in office. some of the leasing agent are okay except SHAY she always has a attitude and can't resolve any problems. SHAY will be nice to you up to the point you sign your lease after that GOODLUCK. same thing for Emily once she takes your money it's over. Avoid this property! Edward Rose Corporate structure is focused on one thing: Making Money. Qualtiy of life is not the focus. Poor work ethic and lack of communication skills among staff inhibit any quality of life for residents. Grounds are frequently littered with animal waste. Hallways are filthy and hallway carpeting is as well while upgrades to club house is done. Maintenance is delayed. Management continues to give good lip service but nothing changes. Vultures. The only time anything moves fast in the office is to sell you a lease. If you're a resident, good luck getting competent help. After informing the office about an issue with my utilities, it took 5 weeks for them to give me an answer. In that time I accumulated lease violations and late fees. Their excuse was that NIPSCO did not return their email. I got ahold of NIPSCO in 5 minutes after they told me that I needed to pay $300 in fines because they couldn't pick up a phone or tell me who to contact. They are happy to allow you to be charged. Do not rent here. Nothing short of predatory. read more

RUN! This place looks nothing like the photos. Management and staff are completely incompetent, and will take your money without properly conducting apartment maintenance and upkeep prior to move-in. This facility forced me to sign a lease two weeks ahead of my chosen move-in date, claiming that the unit could no longer be held. Luckily, I was smart enough to ask to see the unit prior to my move-in date. The place was absolutely filthy!!!!! I was completely shocked that management thought this apartment was not only move-in ready, but that they were comfortable in showing an apartment that was in no way, shape or form ready for occupancy. The hallways are completely filthy; both the walls and carpet. Completely overpriced rent, and a scam for a holding fee of $250 for units that are not even inspected from the last tenants. After notifying the complex of my findings, they claim they didn't know and tried to hurry and remedy the issues that were wrong...I was not contacted until AFTER closing on my move-in date, in which I had already taken off of work and had to cancel deliveries as well as other arrangements. Management is a joke...they are in constant "meetings", racist and rude. If you're smart, you will do your research and move to some of the other great apartment homes in Indiana. And please note, I am not a resident there. I canceled my lease immediately and others should as well. read more

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here as a part of the Brickshire Community. Elena and Colleen in the office are always so incredibly nice and helpful! You can tell management truly cares about their residents and community. They often host charity events to help those in need which I think is awesome! They are committed to continuing the betterment of the community, always welcoming suggestions, and unlike most companies- your voice is actually heard and they make a genuine effort to help. In my time here they have re-sealed the parking lots and driveways, changed up cleaners and painted hallways, implemented a trash concierge service that is a super convenient for us residents, and upgraded our internet service. I have lived at two previous apartments before coming here and neither of them come close to Brickshire. It's a quiet, cozy, community that makes you feel at home. For the love of god DO NOT LIVE HERE! The apartments are nice. However, the staff is a bunch of airheads. Every time I asked Elena anything the whole year I was there she would give me the wrong information. Almost every issue we had in the apartment went ignored until we reported them to the Better Business Bureau. Elena never told me we had to use their internet and at the time it was incredibly slow. That affected my job. I hardly got water to come out of my bathtub and it was never properly fixed. The day I moved in the place was dirty and there were mystery hairs in the bathtub. The Kitchen floor was sticky with hair and food in the corners. It was a nightmare. When we were house hunting I called Elena and asked her what we should do as far as us not knowing if we were staying another year or moving. She told us to fill out another year form and if we found a house she would just rip up the paperwork. NOPE We bought a house and told them we were moving. We told them a month ahead of time. One week before we are leaving Shelly calls and says we owe $3000 for breaking next yrs lease. Elena lied repeatedly that she told us anything. She has been a thorn in our side since we moved in. She and a few others are just plain incompetent. Do not trust her or any of them. Technically what she did was verbal fraud. We have reported them and called news stations. This whole company is unprofessional and I personally question their billing statements for certain things, as well. If they are ignoring you make sure to report them to the Better Business Bureau. Words cannot express the horrible experience I have had here at Brickshire Apartments, located off of Merrillville Rd and 93rd Ave in Merrillville. From the infestation of biting, flying and swarming GNATS, to the petrified funk fuming from the hallways, to the mounds of garbage that fill the sidewalk and driving area in front of the 'every-other-day' broken garbage compactor--Brickshire Apartments should be reported not only to the BBB but also to the Lake County Department of Health. When my concerns regarding the overwhelming, multiplying gnat issue was reported to the current property manager as well as the leading agents, my concern was brushed off. In fact, my concern about the Dumpster/fungus disease and germ spreading gnats was bombarded by an attempt to pacify and mitigate my concern. I was told, " Yeah, we have them here in the front office too. I can't even eat my lunch in here..." Following that egregious remark, I was them informed by the same leasing agent, " My boyfriend also has them!" REALLY. You equate my issue and the condition of the apartment community that you work for with that of your boyfriend's??? Ridiculously irrelevant! I have no idea how your boyfriend maintains his house/apartment. (As a matter of fact, that comment could have been considered elusively derogatory.) As a tenant with a family, we can't enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner without bugs landing next to or into our food. We can barely run the hot water or water of any temperature, to be frank, without at least 3-4 gnats swarming to get to the droplets of moisture. And finding them in the fridge and the freezer, laying upside down after they have miraculously entered and died from the cold is just disgusting. There has been issues with the trash compactors numerous times within the last few months. The doggy poop cans overflows with dog waste bags, their rarely emptied. The snow removal on the property is a JOKE! Service work orders are delayed while the maintenance team ATTEMPTS to remove the snow. I'm not sure why Edward Ross properties doesn't use contractors to provide this service. One of the catching promise while viewing the complex prior to moving in was that work orders that are placed by 3pm (Mon-Fri) is the same day repaired. Maybe this theory would exist if the maintenance team was fully staffed. Overall Brickshire is a quite community. read more

One star is too many. The office staff is continously providing innacurate information. Be warned, that when you are first offered an apartment an when signing you lease you will be provided with documation indicating what your rent will be if paid on the 1st and also what it would be if you paid on the 15th. These will be provided to you as an option. Do not take the bait! If you pay on the 15th as they offer they will still consider this late. When you apply for another property they will give you a bad recommendation and use this against you. You will receive multiple bills each month that all differ in the amount. There are minimal maintenance workers and internet services goes out as well as heat. Every winter our heat has had issues or gone out. The property is not clean and the hallways are always messy. The entrance doors are broke and anyone can come in. The office does not keep the posted hours and are rarely inside. The office caters to finding new tenants, but has sent notices requesting that individuals do not come into the office to discuss their rent or problems with rent. The management has changed in the office several times over the years and with each change the staff has worsened. If you are a minority you will be treated as such and even threatened with the police. The regional manager Steve will not return your phone calls or emails. You will not receive your full security deposit, and if you have an emergency they will not call you but email you. They will however, call you with any non important information. The apartment has gnats in the summer as well as bugs from the outside that get in because of the cheap windows and balcony. The property has dog poop through the grass and all over the property. The property does not return phone calls. This property is owned by Edward Rose and they do not provide contact information. When you send a complaint to the edward rose website it will be refirecte to the property manager Shelly who more than likely be the one you are having trouble with as she is never available. If you are late with your rent please be warned that the office staff will provide you with numerous stories, but it is best if you speak directly with an attorney. Even if you pay your rent and attorney fees you will remain with the attorney. The property wants to look good so they play as if they are good, but once you sign the lease you will be in a world of confusion, chaos, and manipulation. Every week people seem to be moving in or out rather quickly. Your rent will not be the same each month and the bills that break down your rent through the third party the property uses will not be seen as valid. the office keeps notes on its tenants. Shelly will tell you anything that sounds good and will comment on online reviews so that newcomers will not find this information and rent elsewhere, but that is probably the best bet. All these reviews indicating that the property is problematic are not false. Some rooms in your apartment will not have heat. If you live over the garages(2nd floor) you will hear the garages opening and closing continuously throughout the night. The children in the area run through the apartments leaving trash that will stay in the same place for weeks. The trash is always piled up by the compactor and in the summer gives a bad smell. In the winter they do not shovel and they do not put down any salt. WARNING if in any trouble with this community get an attorney do not talk to them yourself and keep all the notices and emails they give you as it will help you in the end. They have added downspouts to deal with rain and melting snow, they've implemented a trash service that will pick up your trash at your apartment, have upgraded internet, and we haven't had a problem with roaches, bugs, or rodents. I am looking for apartments and I came across this complex and view the photos of the units and they are cute. I recently became a reviewer I have learned to do research first and after reading a few reviews I noticed a few that stood out. Then I skimmed through the rest and noticed that all the positive reviews come from Caucasian people and the bad reviews come from African American and a few other(brown) ethnicities and came to the conclusion that this apartment complex is kind of racist but maybe it's just me. read more

NEVER RENT FROM BRICKSHIRE IN MERRILLVILLE INDIANA. I've lived here for years however since the new leasing office employees have started Brickshire I'm getting bogus water bill charges. I recieved a water bill last Spring for $97 that I paid not paying any attention then the next month I recieved a $181 the following month and IMMEDIATELY called Shelly at the leasing office and was told " she saw I had a sprinkler water leak". That's not true I've never had any leaks in my unit. Shelly explain let me get this correct and she apologized. Now two months went by and my invoice was corrected and then the charges appeared again. I called back spoke to Elena again another apology and then she said let her correct the bill and was told to send it my rent minus those incorrect charges.I was assured that it's corrected. I've left messages and dropped off written letter to the leasing office to ensure those charges was removed. I've recieved a court summons for a charge almost $700 from that $181 water bill. Ironically I've recieved the summons a day after I spoke to Shelly about my family security being violated when the maintenance man left two on my master door keys and two of my mailbox keys on the outside of my door. I asked for the corporate office she gave me a telephone to someone in Indianapolis name Steve which he hasn't called me back after Ive left multiple messages. There's been so many issues within the last 12 months I can't stay here. I would never recommend anybody to stay here. read more

I'm very disappointed in Brickshire Apartment in their snow removal process. Our residential streets and sidewalk looks like an ice rink. This is just the beginning of winter and first impression is the most crucial time for residents to decide on renewals of lease. I will not be surprised if we have many incidents due to residents and visitors swerving into park cars and falling due to non-shovel sidewalks that are ice slopes. Words can't express the feelings I have toward this company. Starting from the misinformation to robbing money from my deceased father. Tammy will tell you anything to get you in the door. She doesn't obey to the fair housing law. And the manager Kia is NEVER available. They can't keep up with payments and say one thing and do another. Now my father passed after a month living there and was told to but in the notice to vacate. Once I put it in I asked will it be ok to leave my the 30th because I can't afford to stay. Now here I am with a check of $461 out of $1354. They charged 12 days in April and "charges" that weren't paid in February or March! No one called and reached out to me about this charges. Too bad Edward Rose doesn't pay attention to the Yelp Reviews. We lived in this complex for nearly 3 years. We had quite a few problems- everything from our cable going out for over 3 weeks (with maintenance promising to fix it); dryer broken for over 2 weeks, and the best of all- the violent couple who lived above us and decided to throw down at least twice a week at 3 in the morning. I called the Merrillville Police on them 3 times and complained to the office no joke OVER A DOZEN TIMES before they FINALLY evicted them. Pretty certain they were also either growing weed or dealing with VERY large quantities because it ALWAYS smelled like cannibus field when you walked into our building with the most potency coming directly from their apartment. Oh we never got to fully enjoy the beautiful pool because there were always some unsupervised kids in the pool screaming and yelling and calling each other the N word. I complained about that too, but again promises were made that they never followed through on. One day my building smelled like something was on fire, so I called 911- come to find out some more unsupervised kids in our building were burning paper and throwing it on the floor. I'm sure they're happy that didn't cause a real fire bringing on plenty of insurance fun! We finally got some sense and bought a house. The office girls were super nice and treated us with respect, but that's about all I can say on a positive note. read more

I have had such an experience with the management here and let's just say, it's not so great. This is not my first time renting an apartment so I know what I should expect as a tenant regarding management staff and safety. First off, these people that manage this place are so unorganized it's ridiculous! Here's a few examples...the day we move-in my key didn't work to the apt. so I had to call my roommate to open the door for me (this is the key they personally gave me, mind you!); my roommate and I had to wait to do laundry for 2 weeks because they didn't have the washer and dryer installed at the time of our move in ; they lost my rent check but not my roommates, then wanted to charge me a $50 late fee! (How they lost my check and not my roomies is a mind boggler to me, when I myself put both checks in there!); the rent is due 1st of the month and currently it is the middle of the month and we are still waiting for our rent checks to clear (they told my roommate, after she called 3 times, that they would be clearing that day, each day she called!). Secondly, the maintenance staff seems like they could care less about helping you after we had one gentleman come in for 2 seconds to look at our microwave and tell us that he can't fix it, and it broke after only a few months living there (The management did have someone come out to fix it though, so they at least took care of that) and these are brand new apartments! Lastly, I would like to add, that in the past month we have had one of our neighbor's car's get blown up and our other neighbor's car got the tires stolen off of it! These acts both happened right in our parking lot! All I can say is that my roommate and I are out of there when our lease is up! I hate to write this review because these apartments are really nice and have nice amenities but it's just a shame when the community doesn't seem safe and the management staff is not on the ball. Surprisingly, I haven't had all of the issues that others seem to have. Yes the garbage disposal being out was a bug for me for that short time but I didn't let it get the best of me.There was only one major situation I've have since living here which was a bee problem a few weeks ago. It took maintenance a little while to come and get control of the hive that developed on my patio. However, Most times when I call for maintenance, they are responsive. I don't like that the walls are kinda thin because my upstairs neighbors have some kind of surround system and they tend to watch movies late which annoys me but thankfully I'll be moving into my fiancé home where THAT wont be an issue for me anymore. I'm confused as to why people who are continuing to live here 3,4,5 years complain so much but haven't moved..Other than that, I really love the complex and the staff at Brickshire. Alaina is ALWAYS pleasant and I just love Lakia (not sure if shes around anymore) but overall, I believe you make it how you want it. read more

This place is ridiculous! It's not worth your money, I should of bought a house. It may look "nice", but that's about it! I lived here for many years. I was happy to leave, because I was relocated for my job. The Management staff is horrible. Many apartments where robbed when I lived their, including main and I was not on the 1st floor. The Property Manager didn't even have enough respect to call and make sure everything was okay, She only sent an email! The maintenance staff was horrible to, it took days to have anything fixed. DO NOT rent from this property. I began my inquiry with the leasing agent, she was nice and helpful, the property was beautiful so I decided to return and fill out an application. Everything went downhill form there, I was told I was approved and could come out to see the actual style apartment that I wanted, I began this process in January, it's not April and I still have not seen the actual style apartment. The property manger was involved and another leasing agent, they all are unprofessional and dishonest. I was told that they have it where you can pay your rent online, the leasing agent assured me that she lives on the property and pays her bill each month this way, when I went to inquire about this for myself I was told it was not even set up and to just send my money in, but I Still haven't seen an apartment nor had they every drafted any paperwork up for the apartment after I had been told on numerous occassions that would be done. Many visits and phone calls later I just had enough. I really wanted to stay here but afer dealing with these people I would not recommend Anyone to do business with these people. They ran an additional credit check that they should not have. RUN. Please find another property, everyting that is pretty on the outside is NOT always pretty on the inside! read more

I have rented from numerous apartment complexes over the years. This is the most expensive and worse run complex ever. There has been a raise increase in rent every year I have been here(3). They purchase DISH TV and resell it to you for $33 a month, if you want HD you must pay 20 more, which DiSH TV will give you free HD if you already are a subscriber. Thus overcharging you $20. The internet is horrible and they will not allow you to get any other than their internet. The max speed is 750KB/ sec and is slower seeing as you share that with the whole building. This is a $33 charge also(more if you do not get the bundle). The latest kicker is there a water bill. Each unit has a water fee with its own meter. The great part being there is a $4 "administrative fee" every month no matter how much you use. The club house closes early everyday so if UPS drops off things you have to get it on the weekend and pray someone is there. The only pro is pets. My dogs are the only reasons I still live here. read more

I was very excited to move in to Brickshire, but have been incredibly disappointed. I paid to have movers help me move up from Indianapolis, and we ended up waiting for four hours while the office staff tried to find an apartment for me, as the one they gave me a key to was completely trashed and missing a deadbolt lock to the outside door. I was put up in a showroom for a few days, but all of my things were in storage, which made it incredibly difficult to get dressed and prepared for work in the morning. When my apartment was finally made available, the maintenance team moved my things in, but I had to put my bed and dresser together on my own--which is what I paid to have movers do in the first place. I still have no washer and dryer, my internet is not working properly, and I am not receiving phone calls back. I have been compensated less than the additional fee I had to pay the movers for the extra time we sat waiting on my planned move-in day. I am anticipating an expensive, yet sub-standard, year ahead. read more

Another dissatisfied customer. I moved in to the apartment complex in January. Immediately things went wrong. I should have taken heed when another tenant was in the office complaining about the maintenance and the time it took for a work order to be resolved. Here it is. I am an insulin dependent diabetic and meals are important for my health and wellbeing. My oven would not work upon move in and I went to the office to inform the staff. A certain individual, if she reads this (I am a firm believer that a person knows their words when they hear them again), told me to use the microwave. I was blown away. Two weeks to have this resolved and finally a working oven. I learned from a staff member the piece was taken out of my oven prior to move in and put into an oven in a different unit that was having the same problem. Second, the screen for the patio sliding door was absent. I reported this. Third, the bedroom windows let up but will not stay up. I have to prop my bible in the window to keep it open to catch a nice breeze. All of this was reported to the onsite staff. To add insult to injury, two weeks ago I went to the office to voice my concerns with unresolved issues. I asked to speak with the person I had been dealing with from day one. The new hire informed me the person was currently out showing an apartment and could possibly be a while. When I stated I would wait, the person looked like a deer caught in headlights. I stayed positioned by the coffee maker facing the door so I could see the person I was waiting for upon return. Well, how about the person I was waiting for came out of the complex manager's office. I immediately stated to the person that told a blatant and intentional lie, "I thought you said "the person" was out showing an apartment?" The person said to me I was tripping and said you didn't see them come in? Referring to a young lady that had two people with her. Mind you this lady was there sitting at the table when I arrived and had not moved. Huuummmm! This was a bald faced lie as I never moved while I waited for the person to return. It took everything in me to hold my peace! Back to today, I am moving on Friday and the screen has not been put in or the broken bedroom windows fixed. This past weekend my oven would not shut off. It stayed on for a period of three hours. I called the number listed on the complex web site and followed the prompts as instructed to reach emergency maintenance personnel. No one returned my call or showed up. This is not the first time. No such thing as emergency maintenance here at Brickshire! A false advertising gimmick. I went to the office on Monday and reported this. As I sit here writing this review today, Wednesday, May 4, 2016, no one from the office has called nor a visit from anyone in the maintenance department. I called corporate on Monday as well. I could not reach the corporate manager at the direct number I was provided by a resident that had the number and suggested I call. I reached a voicemail informing for urgent issues to contact the name and number he provided for his administrative assistant. I called back and spoke with his administrative assistant and shared everything I had to endure since moving to "Live Better Brickshire" (yeah right), as she informed she would pass it on to the corporate manager. Well now. I have yet to receive a call from management offering an apology for my experience and the incompetence of the staff. I did leave a message on his phone stating I fully understand why the staff here is trifling. Upper management is trifling. I do not and will not ever recommend this complex or their sister property (Mallard Bay), to anyone. I pray not one more individual or family will be subjected to what I have experienced here at truly trifling and you won't live better here BRICKSHIRE.
