If you're reading this, you're probably carefully considering a trauma or co-dependency focused program for either you or a loved one. I was in that boat a few months ago and I'm so glad I was referred to The Bridge. Eight years ago, I attended treatment for alcoholism and drug dependency, and I was starting to experience symptoms relating to unresolved grief and trauma and wanted a deeper sense of recovery. It was getting to the point that I was pretty miserable and it was taking its toll on my life spiritually, professionally and within my family. The Bridge to Recovery provided a safe and comfortable environment for me to process some pretty heavy trauma in. I feel they successfully helped me discover tools and strategies, which have helped me to cope with and untangle years of trauma and difficult emotions tied to the traumatic experiences. I have a better understanding of codependency and how trauma works and feel so much better having released a ton of difficult energy. The therapy staff at The Bridge to Recovery is pretty epic. Within their first two week program, both Kelly and Julie masterfully craft a way out of the bondage of trauma and in the second two weeks Debra and Vass help each client to take control of their lives and their futures. The bridge could be great. But in 2026 it is not. Many issues. Low credentialed staff. One LCSW who supervises both certified therapists and uncertified "counselors." A lot of unprofessional behavior on the part of the group leads. A CEO who is more committed to his recording career than treatment does hurt the performance of the Bridge. If you head there, remember that you're probably at a very low point in your life and have been on the losing end for a while. Some say this place will save you. Others will say it does nothing. I have to say that the experience depends upon whether you do your work and also whether or not the staff gives you help, or abuses you. For those of you that still want the experience after you read this entire post, the best advice I can give is to immerse yourself in the work. Relationships with other clients are good to form, but if I could do anything better, it would be to get more immersed in the work. In many cases, the staff applies the work incorrectly to your personal situation, so if you can work ahead and do the exercises, you'll know who is qualified to help (Paul, Susan, Deborah, Jamie, Melissa, Kelly) and isn't (Brennan), (sometimes Julie, but she is actually helpful too). The more work you prepare and come to groups having completed, the more the staff will treat you like an adult. Let your fellow clients experience their own emotions and recovery without your interference. Some people have deep rooted issues that they need to resolve - I care about my group so I won't talk about their situations, but you'll see it all. Find the staff members you get along best with and who are grown mature adults. They're there. But there are some that still have unresolved trauma that comes out as childishness. They select a client to be the "mayor," who essentially leads the other clients and connects the staff with the clients. In my 6 weeks, only once did they chose the client that could best lead the group. Too many recovering addicts on staff in this place without enough certified practitioners. CEO Sabyn Mayfield is recovering, and Deborah Cromwell, a counselor, recruited many of the AA and NA people she sponsored to be on staff. It's good to have people in recovery on staff, but there are too many. The mix is badly unbalanced. Brennan Caffery has been given WAY too much power for an uncertified counselor because he went through recovery with the current CEO Sabyn Mayfield. He is a southern gentleman in public, but is still suffering from ego, control, and domination issues that come out in groups. Paul, Susan, Melissa, and Jamie lead groups well. Kelly, Deborah, and Julie also care, so give them credit. The food is appetizing, but too much of the food service fats and extras. It's hard to find time to work out. The only time is after evening group before you go to bed. lodge isn't open early in the morn. The houses have good accomodations and there's never a problem with utilities or maintenance. Also, you do a blue sheet, which is a daily review of your own behaviors that the staff reviews every morning before groups. The staff will use your observations against you if they are upset with you in any way. So if you have a personality conflict with a group leader, expect to have your own behavior launched back at you, oftentimes with a threat that you'll either die, or be disenrolled. They do this to multiple people. It's hard to tell when threats are empty or serious. People were disenrolled while I was there, and I heard stories of others prior to my arrival. The staff doesn't listen when you have a complaint about another staff member, they take up for them. This is usually called a AFGO - Another F'in Growith Opporunity. It should be called YAMFU - yet another management f*(k Up. Some of the night and weekend staff is professional, others are set in their ways and more interested in over-enforcing rules. Some have forgotten they are dealing with adults and have forgotten basic decency and respect. To be fair, some clients need strict boundaries, but the staff too often defaults to enforcement on everybody of the most strict boundaries. Therapy can be difficult, but actively trying to "crack you open" can hinder therapy. the end goal isn't to crack you open, it's to give you an activity that aids in your recovery. sometimes the emphasis is on the cracking. The bridge was founded by Paul and Carol Cannon in the 1970s. Their formula seemed to work well, but subsequent leaders haven't answered the call the way they did. Long read, but thorough and honest review of my experience. Disclaimer: They are a non-profit and so their tax returns are public - so feel free to take a look and fact check me, I personally found it weird in retrospect that they had so many part-time employees, on Sunday's it was questionable if moments there was even 1 staff member around. But I digress. I was honestly getting a lot out of this program, it's unfortunate that Mr. Brennan Robert Caffery, who I thought he was a good therapist, albeit one that lacked any of the expected credentials - LMFT, LCSW, Ph.D, - none of the above. Look, it was the backwoods of Kentucky, I was the only Asian (obviously) and I can't say it didn't feel like I was being discriminated against when I was the only one kicked out and literally dropped off at a random gas station 6 days before my expected departure date, with less than an hour of notice that all that was happening. Mr. Caffery made the executive decision to kick me out of the program based off unfounded, unproven, false allegation regarding nicotine made by a peculiar and prone-to-hyperbole middle-aged client... The justification was further that I was "late to group in the morning", let me explain, our first activity of the day occurred at 8:00 AM and involved no staff, I will not disclose exactly what it is as that is part of their proprietary formula for treatment, but save to say it is informal and involves zero staff and involves nothing regarding actual mental health. I was completely unable to sleep every single night I was there, I was rolling around in bed from 8-10 pm when trying to go to bed until at least 3 am (on average) everyday I was there. My roommate would wake and turn off the alarm, and so I was a few minutes (literally) late to the 8:00 AM "activity" probably half the days I was there. Activity involving staff/therapists/etc did not commence until almost 2 hours after 8:00 AM, and the latest I EVER was, was half an hour past 8:00 AM, with every other tardiness being a literal few minutes on average at most. I made this issue with sleeping and the alarm clock situation known literally every single day, throughout the program, I was complaining to anyone who would listen, so to say that they did not know the circumstances would be nothing less than asinine. So the audacity to use this as justification for giving me the boot, hurt deeper as the void of empathy to any degree to one's circumstances and consequent punishment rather than compassion felt like the deepest of ironies against all their claimed founding principles. The CEO reached out after my longtime Ph.D Therapist had an extensive conversation with him regarding my treatment their and how it wasn't right. The kicker is, they refused to refund the money for all the days I was not able to even experience of utilize as they kicked me out. I was told by the CEO that "the board would fire him" if he were to fulfill a merchant's responsibility - to render the services that were paid for - really? lol. I wasn't going to write a yelp review and be that guy, but seeing this rated 5 stars is morally reprehensible and an ethical abomination. If they ever decide to respond to this, I encourage you guys to try to challenge anything I am saying for anything other than it is, the cold, hard truth - they won't, cause that would necessitate that they perjure themselves. You guys were a monumental disappointment, I was honestly getting a lot out of the program and so I leave them 2 stars instead of one. This was the worst experience I have had since being raped and physically and psychologically abused for 2 decades. Having to relive your trauma and unqualified people (not professionals of any accreditation) running the program harass and dismiss you openly is beyond the pale. Believing a phasemate that outright lied to get me sent home early without being willing to hear anything from the other side or even disclosing why I was being sent home is utterly disgusting, inappropriate and unprofessional. The director, Lindsey, spent a significant amount of time talking to her phase graduates and even disparaging me to my family physician but never once reached out about her concerns directly. Again unprofessional and inappropriate but Rachel was adamant about the entire staff resolving issues directly and not disparaging others without them present during the program...it was just a lie and far from the last that they are willing to tell you. I was discharged to a program that doesn't even exist. These people are comfortable unraveling their clients, making things worse then dumping them at a nearby gas station. The new CEO called to try to resolve my stay but only offered false recrimination, lying and finally dismissal. Being forthright about the reason for calling would have been more professional and appropriate. Then there was the double standard of expecting me to be treated poorly and offer understanding to someone who is similarly suffering but chose to take out their insecurities on me. Strangely enough to the CEO and staff, everyone who comes to your program is suffering and they were all worth being treated with dignity and respect, not just those they choose to be worthy. Buy into the brainwash at your own risk but you won't find staff that live what they preach, tell the truth, offer help, offer understanding or even try to help. For staff time spent here is an extension of their personal lives and they are entitled to treat you in whatever way they choose and the gap between how they approach their clients is immense. So buy in or be betrayed! Graduates of the program seem to have a new set of justifications for behaving as abhorrently as those who enable them to attack others without empathy or remorse. There are a significant number of other opportunities to help those who suffered trauma which are better equipped, have valid accreditation and education, can offer care beyond "Trauma Camp", stand behind their work and care about their patients and their outcomes. Choose any other program...that actually exists. I completely expect you to send a cease and desist order over a review you didn't like. The caring and skills of the therapists and other employees gave me the confidence to reveal my most disturbing memories. With the therapeutic classes including exercise and nutrition, I felt well looked after. The inclusive meals were prepared by "top" chefs who addressed my individual requests. Spending enough time in such a safe environment was essential to my making a smooth transition back to my home.
