But the 2023 and 2024 tax years take the prize for costly missteps. Despite holding a CPA license, Dominique repeatedly advised us to file under incorrect statuses -- including "Head of Household" -- based on my extended military deployments. She also failed to identify a lawful qualifying dependent for that filing status, which she later admitted was inapplicable. These errors have now triggered IRS issues we are still dealing with. Even worse, although she acknowledged the filing mistakes in writing, she refuses to issue a refund for her services. A CPA is legally and ethically bound to uphold tax law -- not submit inaccurate returns just to appease a client. She also misled us into believing that filing separately and filing late would not be an issue -- both of which have led to problems.
