It's hard to describe, but I just have an enjoyable time walking slowly around this gallery and checking out the art. The place feels like it has a heart. They're featuring local artists right now and have a handout they give you listing their day jobs. I thought it was a cool idea. You know, "That girl who served me those stiff drinks at the Behan painted this? Wow!" That sort of thing. It added something to my experience. They are also hosting musical and other events. We went in with an idea of what we wanted and John guided us with suggestions. That said, he is very difficult. This last time we were tossed between 2 different frames. We chose one, gave a 50% deposit. When we arrived home and considered the space it was to be hung, we decided to go with the other choice. We immediately called John (we left his store only 30 minutes prior) to tell him we are changing to the other frame. He was nasty, said we were "grinding him" (not sure what that means since we were asking only for his opinions) and said he's too busy to deal with this and to come get our piece. We attempted to calm him down and in spite of his unprofessional demeanor told him we'd be in to look at the other frame. Upon further consideration I decided I did not want to work with someone so unprofessional. When I arrived I asked him what went wrong and he lost it again. Crazy! He the gave me our piece wrapped in paper, not in the tube he was given and when I asked him to put it in the tube for protection, he said "I already rolled it." I've never purposely gone in with the intention of seeing the particular artist's work, but I've always been impressed and delighted by what I've seen. Currently there are two Boston artists showing here, one of whom uses solar panels on the backs of his sculptures to produce a false sense of movement. The gallery seems to show new, interesting work, which both challenges current artistic boundaries and continues to be beautiful and enjoyable to look at. And in the end, that's what always gets me.

Their staff provides some of the best customer service I've *ever* encountered. During my last shopping experience, they not only made gift suggestions based upon the occasion I was shopping for, but also gift wrapped it with a beautiful blue bow, held my baby while I paid, and offered me up some quality content suggestions for the greeting card I'd purchased upon request! (Note: I don't usually impose upon folks in this way, but the staff is so great, the place feels like you're with family.) Street parking can be a pain in the tuchus though...prepare to scout around a bit for a free metered space. It's…read morelocated behind the admissions office in Devlin Hall If you go during the week, during the day, don't be put off by the mobs of prospective students/families and current students flooding in/out of class. Once you get past the crowds, you're free to retreat in the quiet, intimate, two floor displays. The guards are very sweet and knowledgeable and will often talk to you about what they know. You can probably leisurely soak in the entire exhibit in a hour or two, which makes for a lovely weekend afternoon outing (or fantastic break from outrageous thesis researching). There have never been more than a handful of people in there when I've visited during the week, and I doubt the weekends are any busier. Last semester there was a Jackson Pollock/Herbert Matter exhibit, and currently the exhibit is Jewish mosaics from the Roman Empire.

It is more like a collection of art around the brewery, but the signs are funny and it's interesting to note paintings that were donated vs. found in a thrift store vs. found in the garbage. It ranges from funny proportions to some truly bizarre. It's a great activity to giggle at with friends or make up fun commentary on a date. It's a fun little concept, free, and open late, so it's a funs stop in. The brewery features a full bar, arcade and board games and BBQ food as well. The owner even showed us an old cigarette dispensing machine now filled with chocolate packs. There's a lot going on and it is apparent a lot of thought and creativity went into the space. It's certainly not like a traditional "museum" but sometimes you need to see some bad art to really appreciate some good art elsewhere. You'll end up laughing at something.

During a recent weekend trip to Boston, I reserved an entire day for the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA)…read moreand it was the best decision I could have made. If I lived in Boston, I would become a member so that I could visit at will, even if only for few hours at a time. I am particularly interested in the impressionists, and John Singer Sargent, so I kept mostly to the 2nd floor. The museum is well organized, and there are staff floating around to answer any questions (one staffer even offered some tips to reduce the glare when taking a photo of a certain painting). I had checked out of my hotel so I had baggage with me (don't we all)...MFA has a convenient bag check. I also purchased a sizeable book from the bookshop and the staff put it in a box for me to keep it from being damaged during travel. I saw one temporary exhibit that was a nicely curated mix of multimedia art, and I also enjoyed seeing some of the rooms presented in a gallery style so that I could truly appreciate modern display methods. Six hours here went by in a flash, and I will definitely be back to see more of the MFA's vast collection. p.s. The equestrian sport of polo came from Persia?? Loved this fact! I also really enjoyed the time put into the object labels and the stories they told. "The most outrageous series of ferocious daubs that any slanderer of Venice could possibly imagine," a quote from a critic describing Renoir's Grand Canal, Venice, made me snort laugh out loud!

The Boston Museum of Fine Arts features an impressive selection of art from around the world and…read moreacross different periods. We explored the Egyptian, Greek, European, Flemish and Dutch, Asian, Impressionist, and a small Jewish section. The exhibits are wonderful, and the museum is too large to explore in a single day. The gift shop has a nice selection of books, cards, and other typical museum knickknacks. Their Impressionist-themed puzzles were especially interesting. This is a progressive museum that strongly supports respective causes. If that bothers you, you may not enjoy your visit.
