UW Health itself -- the central brain of the operation -- is pretty messed up. Billing is an ongoing nightmare. Bills arrive with 5 days until the due date (not enough time to get a bank bill pay check delivered even if I submit it the moment I get the bill), and UW Health refuses to correct this. Even after paying the full amount due, the next month I get another bill for the same services, with no good explanation for why this isn't all billed at once. I've tried to resolve this numerous times, and receive unhelpful answers from someone at UW Health in Madison (so, not a Portage clinic employee) who clearly doesn't care. The portal that they use to communicate with patients (MyChart) is pretty clunky and frustrating to use. I once asked if a certain setting could be changed (for email notifications) and was told by UW Health that there is no such feature built into the software. I contacted Epic (the maker of the software) directly and was told that there was such a feature but UW Health hadn't turned it on. So again, my concern was ignored.

I love how they combine gentle, hands-on, natural approaches to care with technology that actually objectively measures your progress. We quickly googled online and decided to drive 25 min to come here rather another place 5-10 min closer, and that was a smart move. The urgent care/ ED here was great and super efficient, went through triage, got brought into treatment room, had vitals and brief history taken all done under 20 min or less. We were seen by Dr Biederman who was just efficient, wound cleaned and stapled and we were on our way, whole visit was about an hour, in contrast to Minneapolis children's where we were in lobby waiting for two hours, not seen till I wanted to leave. Other than their harder to find entrance, I would highly recommend this place if you have urgent need like ours.

However, I had some reservations because the interactions and the phone-answering service had a very corporate and unfriendly feel to them. On the second call I made to set up the appointment, the receptionist came across as a bit snotty. Even though I was calling more than a week in advance, she acted like I was putting her out to find a time for me and acted annoyed. In addition, I was told I would have to have X-rays every 3 years to continue to see them in the future, which I thought was extensive. Previous chiropractors I have seen have only required initial X-rays. X-rays cause non-ionizing radiation and can lead to cancer due to DNA breakage. One would think doctors interested in health would not require that. I was on my way to my appointment today and called to let them know I was coming. However, the receptionist told me my appointment was canceled because I did not call to confirm it earlier. I was shocked. I hadn't gotten a chance to call to confirm the appointment. I had driven from out of town to come. Anyway, I think if I make an appointment and haven't cancel it, I will be there. Many people, including myself, don't always have time to call and confirm every appointment they make. Although I can understand the policy, I don't think canceling the appointment of a person who needs help, because they didn't have a chance to confirm it, is a very professional or caring thing to do. I can't speak to the skills of the doctors who work at Back in Action as I have not seen them. I didn't get that far. I don't plan on making any future appointments.

I presented myself, at their front desk, and after going thru the proof of insurance mumbo-jumbo, I made an appointment with my new personal doctor, Dr Karen Swallen. Wow...what a resume. Graduated from Yale, with a BS. Then, she went on to get a PHD. 5 Years later...she went to medical school, and obtained her MD, from the UW. When I first met her, I commented, that with her educational background, I was surprised she wasn't practicing on Michigan Ave, in Chicago...or Park avenue in New York. She confessed that, at heart, she is just a small town girl. She then gave me a complete physical. She then set up a strategy, for combating, and controling my Type II diabetes, my Atril defibrillation, and my COPD. I left, feeling my general health prognosis, was definitely, in GOOD HANDS. Who would have thunk, that this kind of an outstanding Physician, would become my Primary Care Physician...in central Wisconsin. I feel truly blessed...Glen B.

She gave me multiple options for my care plan. At first I was disappointed to leave my original PCP when changing insurance, but Dr. Gehin is amazing and I'm looking forward to continuing care with her. The SSM Dean Medical clinic itself is larger than it looks; it's a mostly updated multi-floor facility with multiple specialities and primary care. The upstairs looked new and clean with a large waiting area. Kind receptionists at the front and smooth check-in -this can go quickly if you check-in via the MyChart app prior to coming in. I saw my PCP downstairs, where there is a small unmonitored waiting area accessible by stairs or elevator, with some activities and books for kids. Standard, clean checkup rooms. Very friendly, and respectful nurse went over medications/history/purpose of the visit. Lots of parking. So far I am very pleased with this clinic.
