It took Dr. Barbara O'Connell ten minutes to say, "Honey, you're fine. Thirty minutes in the OR and you'll be good to go." I cannot speak highly enough of this woman, and since said operation (two years ago this March), I have recommended her in gushing terms to all of my gyno-needing friends. Seriously. (However, it can take a while to get a new-patient appointment, which sucks, but I think is often the case with competent gynecologists.)

I recommend it to all of my female friends and I will never go anywhere else so long as I live in Madison.

I have been a patient of MWH since the day the clinic opened (I followed my OB from her previous…read moreclinic). I have received amazing care of all of the staff at this clinic. The nurses and the docs spend a great deal of time answering my questions and concerns and also chatting about life from time to time. I had PTSD from my first birth (out of state) and the OBs at MWH have been wonderful helping me with my subsequent pregnancies/births. I never felt pressured to have repeat C-sections and was supported when I wanted to have a VBAC. I use this clinic for my PCP as well and glad that I can get in very quickly with the more everyday issues and the fact they have their on lab on site is great.

This was one of the worst pains in my life and they handled the care and the diagnosis efficiently. I was admitted with left sided flank pain which could have been due to a number of reasons, some of which could be ominous. They gave me a CAT scan with a modern instrument plus contrast and found the renal calculus. I was given appropriate pain meds and instructions. I am a retired physician and I have background with which to evaluate. Luckily, the stone passed two days later.

Went to the emergency room for a weird flu that had me vomiting for days. I take low dose (4.5 mg)…read morenaltrexone as new research shows it can be helpful for pain. The ER doc saw naltrexone and assumed I was a junkie because it is used to treat opioid or alcohol addiction at the 50-60 mg dose. Even though I told him I had a full hysterectomy 21 years prior they ran a pregnancy test on me, because you know, junkies aren't to be believed. They also ran a drug screen on me even though I was forward about using cannabis occasionally to help sleep (first time for that as well!). This doctor never asked why I was taking naltrexone. I was required to stay in the hospital over night due to concerns with my heart. The next morning, the Physician assistant Nicolai Gerhartz waltzed into my room with a stupid look on his face and the first thing he said "is it drinking?" I was still sick and out of it and didn't understand what he was asking and honestly didn't even know if he was a doctor, nurse or what his role was because he didn't even introduce himself. He said "do you drink?" I said I have a glass of wine once in a while, still not registering what he was talking about. He NEVER specifically asked why I took the naltrexone, he just made assumptions about me and put me in a box. Then he disrespected me even further, sat down on the couch in my room with his hands in his pockets and proceeded to lecture me about cannabis use and probably I was having a reaction to that and nothing else was wrong with me. Later when I suddenly experienced a caffeine withdrawal headache (never had it before, had no clue what was happening but it felt like my head was going to explode. My husband and the nurse were trying to figure out what was happening. Gerhartz walked into the room and said "has this ever happened to you before?" I answered no. He looked at my husband and said "has she ever done this before?" Gerhartz is a pompous bully who thinks it is ok to treat people with zero respect if they have a mental health or addiction disorder. I've never experienced sanctuary trauma so blatantly. I filed a formal complaint and received a cute little letter saying both doctors were talked to. Friends in recovery from mental health or addiction be very wary of the abusers in this system. You are worth respect! File a complaint if they don't treat you with respect! Sanctuary trauma is serious and causes people to disengage from care.

Because I was an OB patient, they rotate you through all 4 doctors (one of the 4 is on call when you deliver, therefore, you get to meet all of them ahead of time). Very happy with the practice in general, but ended up feeling most comfortable with Dr. Melius. He ended up being the doctor on call the day I delivered and he was great. In short, he's awesome. Extremely knowledgeable and up to date on everything. He's warm, funny and very personable. He is gentle, calm and reassuring. The man listens!!!! He talks with you, not at you and makes you feel like a person, not just a chart with a name attached. He does tend to run behind, but that is only because he spends a lot of time with each of his patients. I'm OK with waiting for that. I have now seen him for OB care, delivery, postpartum and as a GYN patient and he is great in all areas.

I am so dismayed by the lack of professionalism I experienced at Physicians for Women. I had no…read moreidea that the physical exam I believed I was scheduling was really an "introduction to the practice" visit and not an exam at all! I know that they have a policy of warning new patients about this distinction, but no one informed me that I was not scheduling an exam. During the fifteen-minute appointment I had with a nurse practitioner who was leaving the practice to pursue her love of bariatric surgery (!), I learned everything about the practice that I had already learned by reading the website. I feel incredibly frustrated that I am being charged for this brief visit, which did not in any way meet my expectations. I have been to doctors all over the country and have never before been tricked into an appointment with no purpose. If they had informed me that I was not signing up for an actual exam, I could have avoided losing the two hours I spent traveling to and from the appointment and waiting in the clinic. They were not clear or up front about their policy, and I resent having to pay for this subpar experience.

And then, when you do find a provider you like she leaves (no fault to her for that) but as a patient at the clinic you have to go back on the "waiting list" because the other providers aren't taking "new patients"....even when you aren't a new patient to the clinic. I wanted to like this place, I wanted the small clinic feel where I thought it would be warm and welcoming, not the busy rushed atmosphere of the large mega clinics in the area. I tried for almost 10 years; Not worth it. As I get older I am going to need a place that listens to me and treats me politely. Unless they overhaul the staff I don't see that happening here so I'm doing something I should have done years ago. Leave.

I recommend them to everyone I hear is looking for reproductive healthcare. I was planning to use state provided health insurance for the first time. I called ahead of time to see if I needed to do anything beforehand and they assured me that I did not. When I arrived, the woman at the front desk filled out all of the paper work for me and made the whole process very easy. It only took five minutes to get everything set up. When I met with the nurse, she really took time with me to make sure that I knew what my options were for birth control, so that I could make an informed decision about my body. She was careful to use inclusive language, which I really appreciated. During the procedure, the doctor was very kind and even hummed softly while she put in the IUD. All around a great experience minus the cramping. Under the insurance, the whole procedure was free of cost. I am linking information about the state health insurance. I'm almost out of my first trimester (first pregnancy), and so far Miller, who I see at the UW…read moreHealth West Towne Clinic (I started with Unity and now have Physicians Plus), seems like a decent OB. I found her before I got pregnant, searching for an OB who could supervise my high risk pregnancy without making unreasonable demands for unnecessary interventions. Miller was the third whom I interviewed, and the first to say that if I didn't want to be induced, we could work out an alternative--the first two insisted that induction was necessary for ANY pregnant person taking anticoagulants, even after acknowledging that the only real issue was with epidurals, which I clearly indicated I was happy to forego. Miller is probably more amenable to avoiding interventions because of her age; I would guess she's over 70, and is already only part-time with UW Health. This means that her availability is not great, but I was won over by her frankness when she told me she didn't know for sure what we'd need to to do to avoid induction, but gave me her best guess (which I know from research is exactly what they do in Australia for pregnancies with the same clotting factor issues), and told me she'd look into it. I highly value a doctor who is willing to admit when they don't know something and look it up; this is a characteristic she shares with my GP (Mark Beamsley), who recommended her in the first place. In fact, I value this quality in Miller so much that I endure a two-hour round-trip bus ride for almost every appointment--West Towne is the clinic that is the furthest it is possible to get from my apartment and remain in the Madison city limits. I will say that my standards are a bit lax here, because it is SO difficult to find someone who is reasonable about my anticoagulants. Miller is not very good, in my opinion, at communicating with patients on an equitable level--that is, I have a masters degree in the social sciences, and I have tried to explain to her that I want fairly technical explanations of risk, etc., and I am still not getting them. Most patients probably don't care about this, but it frustrates me when I can't get a doctor to treat me like a person who is as intelligent as their medical students, just pursuing a different career path. I do find, however, that if I press Miller with sufficient questions, I can usually end up getting answers that are basically satisfying. Before I became pregnant, I also saw the NP at the clinic, Cathy Hubbard. She was very pleasant and friendly, and as a substitute for one of the OBs on staff with minor issues, I highly recommend her. Unfortunately, the main nurse who works with Miller, Gloria, is a NIGHTMARE. This would be a four-star rating if Miller and Gloria were not apparently a package deal. She doesn't seem to know anything about any aspect of care--when she was pushing very strongly for me to get the first trimester screening for Down's syndrome, she couldn't even answer my question about the false positive rate with the screening--and she is EXTREMELY uncommunicative. When I came in at 8 weeks for my first ultrasound follow-up, I was already on Zofran (an anti-emetic) that had been prescribed by Hubbard. I explained that I was still very sick most of the time, not throwing up but constantly nauseated, and Gloria grudgingly allowed that I could take one more pill a day. When I asked if we could try a complementary medication, she dismissed the idea out of hand. She also couldn't find most of the materials she was supposed to be giving to me, and was constantly in and out of the office; that afternoon, I got a call at home from Miller because Gloria had forgotten to look at the sonogram with me, the ostensible purpose of the entire visit! Then, when I saw Miller for my 11-week visit, it turned out that a) I could take FIVE more pills a day of the Zofran, not one, and b) she was happy to write a prescription for two other anti-nausea meds to supplement the Zofran when the nausea was especially bad. I finally discovered, when I had to go through several rounds of phone tag getting the dosage info on the Zofran changed so that insurance would refill it at the appropriate time, that Gloria had assumed at my 8 week visit that I was on the 8mg pills. I wasn't--I was on the 4mg ones, and she had never asked or, apparently, made any effort to even confirm her assumption. I firmly believe that there are three weeks of my life I could have felt mostly okay instead of horribly, permanently hung over, but I lost them because Gloria is incompetent. Every phone interaction I have the with clinic is painful, because Gloria is always the first line of "communication." If I didn't already know how difficult it would be to find an OB who is reasonable about interventions, I would be looking for a replacement. As it is, I put up with Gloria because I need Miller, but it is far from an ideal situation.
