Turns out, Coorparoo is pretty well equipped. And if I recall rightly, West End doesn't have an organic butcher. Watch out--Coorparoo could be the next big thing! Allsop and England is a fantastic little butcher and everything in there is organic except the cheerios. Most of their meat comes from an organic grower in Roma and their chicken from an organic free range grower in Murgon, so you can be sure that your meat isn't travelling too far. They not only sell all your regular cuts of meat beef, lamb and pork, but also do a few things out of the ordinary like goat and duck. We bought a whole duck from there the other day and roasted it--amazing. The prices are reasonable, in fact really reasonable considering it's organic. I'd say it's definitely cheaper than buying Coles organic meat, for example. With so few organic butchers around, I would make a special trip just to go to this butcher. In fact, I'd like to make a habit of it.

ORGANIC BUTCHER. What more possibly needs to be said?…read more Eating organic meat has always been far more important to me than eating organic veggies (if you can do both, you get pats on the back). Luckily, today, I'm going to save you from a long winded, morally righteous rant about it. I'll keep to the basics which are said as simply as this: ORGANIC MEAT IS GOOD FOR YOU, THE ANIMAL, AND THE FARMER. SHOP HERE. ALL THE TIME. START TODAY. Allsop and England also like to keep it local too. You'll see the signs proudly exclaiming that they like "to keep it Australian". Most of their meat comes less than 10 hours driving distance away in Queensland, and so, in the grand scheme of things, these guys are really keeping it close to home. They don't really do 'fancy' here. They've got all your classic cuts, and meats, but nothing too over the top or flashy. They don't need to draw you in using tricks. They're local, they're organic. What more do you want? I am ecstatic to report that the prices are no more expensive than what you'd find at Coles or any other non organic butcher. Are you reading this properly? At Allsop and England, you essentially pay less to eat better meat. I hope I've made my point clear. This is your new butcher. It's good for you, your pocket, for the butcher, for the animals, for the farmers that supply the butcher. Feel proud to purchase your flesh goods here.

"Ooh, those cuts of lamb look delicious" "Ooh, what gorgeous packaging" The Standard Market Company is my equivalent to a candy story for a child. It's resplendently full of fresh produce, meats, gourmet pantry items, cheeses and more. It's certainly a place to visit if you wish to feel like you're living the life of the rich and famous, or if you just want high quality produce for your daily meals. I ducked in for a few items only and resisted the temptation for much more. For $20 I managed to get a few avocados, a loaf of beetroot sourdough, radishes and a few other piece. Yes, it is marginally more expensive that say, Woolworths or Coles, but I honestly don't feel like it is asking that much more on your purse strings. The avocados I bought were actually cheaper than the supermarket across the way and to add to that they were higher quality and larger. You might be looking for cheeses and dips for a weekend get together with friends, or specialty items for a romantic dinner for two or you may just want to eat single girl style with smoked salmon, crackers, and olives (or is that just me?) - point is, whatever the occasion, you'll find something to please here.

We have been shopping here regularly for the past 2 months and not once have been disappointed. The produce is all so fresh and very reasonably priced, the meat from the butchers - while expensive - is of the best quality, the deli and cheese has such a big selection and is well priced and the bakery has so many yummy choices including gluten free. This would also be a good place to come if you are catering for a dinner party or if you just want to treat yourself and that special someone with such an amazing selection of items on offer.

And you're supporting small local business. Win! Their platter of rich, red, iron laden meats just makes me salivate. They've got all of your standard cuts: eye fillet ($29.99 kg), scotch fillet, T-bones, rump, as well as diced meat, and two versions of mince. Then there's ossu buco cuts, and $2 bags of lamb off cuts, and $2.50 bags of neck chops (good for stocks, soup, or delicate treats for your dog). Chicken and pig can be found in various manifestations in the other fridge. The major drawcard for me is the varieties of sausage they sell there (all priced at $7.99). Worchestershire sauce sausage? Herb and garlic? Spanish chorizo sausage that isn't actually chorizo sausage (it's a bit of an odd one, I know)? How about sun dried tomato sausage? Your barbeque will be the most flavourful in town if you shop here, I promise. The service is quick and no nonsense, and you can't argue with the prices. Meat Your Lifestyle has a great range of beef, pork, lamb and chicken, and gives its neighbour, Coles, a run for its money. Whilst not on display, they also have specialty meats written up on their chalk board, like peking duck, so be sure to ask if what you're looking for isn't in the cabinet. My favourites are their osso bucco for only $6.50/kg (great for tenderising in a slow cooker) and their free-range eggs, the cheapest I've come across in Brisbane. I also like their whole free-range chickens, costing around $7/kg. They come with their innards removed, making it quick and easy to stick them in the oven. The only downside is that they don't seem to sell free-range chicken breasts and the chicken breasts they do sell are so big, you have to wonder about the steroid content. Service is mixed, depending on who you get. Some employees there can be a bit abrupt, others really friendly. Either way, it beats Coles!

Vegetarians look away now. Okay, let's kick this review off…read more Meat @ Billy's has a reputation of being one of Brisbane's best butchers and they're not exaggerating. If I want quality cuts of meat, Billy's is where I make a beeline for. Last week was no exception when I wanted to buy a few of the Italian Sausages that I'd discovered were what Merriweather Cafe use in their breakfast baguette. Unfortunately, they were sold out when I arrived but that didn't stop me leaving with bacon, Canadian Maple pork sausages and a leg of pork to slow roast. There's plenty of condiments to consider as well and you'll rarely leave empty handed. The lads behind the counter are friendly, helpful and, using a fan dangled pulley-system contraption, will even open the door for you as you leave. And yes, it is slightly more pricey than what you might buy in the supermarket but I feel it is worth it for the higher quality of produce. It isn't often I crave meats of any kind but if I do, I want it to be good.

They know where the meat came from (which is important to environmentalists and animal lovers like me) and they can take you through the different cuts and best cooking methods for each. Like all awesome butchers they also have dog bones for sale, and are not above slipping a little extra in the package for a particularly personable puppy. You will pay a little more than at the supermarket, but the taste difference is astronomical and well worth the expense.
