However, I still have a little bit of knowledge on the subject and I know for a fact that this particular butchery is big. I can only think of one other in Brisbane that may be larger (Patton's Big Gun in Underwood). The large room is spacious but lined with fridges full of every cut of meat under the sun (or protected from it in air-conditioned comfort). I didn't see any exotic meats, it was mainly variations of pork, chicken and beef, but they came in any shape or form you could possibly want. The room at the back where they prepare and package everything is also visible from the front, which I find somewhat comforting as well as a little gross to look at.

Most of their meat comes from an organic grower in Roma and their chicken from an organic free range grower in Murgon, so you can be sure that your meat isn't travelling too far. They not only sell all your regular cuts of meat beef, lamb and pork, but also do a few things out of the ordinary like goat and duck. We bought a whole duck from there the other day and roasted it--amazing. The prices are reasonable, in fact really reasonable considering it's organic. I'd say it's definitely cheaper than buying Coles organic meat, for example. With so few organic butchers around, I would make a special trip just to go to this butcher. Most of their meat comes less than 10 hours driving distance away in Queensland, and so, in the grand scheme of things, these guys are really keeping it close to home. They don't really do 'fancy' here. They've got all your classic cuts, and meats, but nothing too over the top or flashy. They don't need to draw you in using tricks. They're local, they're organic. What more do you want? I am ecstatic to report that the prices are no more expensive than what you'd find at Coles or any other non organic butcher. Are you reading this properly? At Allsop and England, you essentially pay less to eat better meat. I hope I've made my point clear. This is your new butcher. Of the three facets, I have thusfar stuck with their chaat (fast food) items. Their menu is appealing and getting something substantive, cheap, and fast is all well and good. The dishes I've ordered have been appealing in their variety of flavors, but not fresh and often cold. Of them the aloo tikki chaat (fried mashed potatoes with an alluring combination of chickpeas and garnishes on top) was the best. I couldn't say that the food here was better than any of the other numerous grocery/restaurant Indian places I've found in Brisbane. They've also had some issues ranging from running out of menu items to struggling with card payments that aren't dealbreakers but aren't helping my impression of them either. We browsed their takeaway menu and called to order at 11:45am (time is of the essence when you're on a time limit!) only to be told the kitchen didn't open until midday. We suggested they could take the order and give it to the kitchen and we would come to pick up once it was done, but that seemed all too complicated. So we piled into the car and ordered in person. The restaurant sits one floor above a bustling Indian food market. Walking through the downstairs section everything looked very authentic - this is coming from someone who's never been to India mind you - but it all looked fresh and absolutely delicious! The restaurant itself is a vast expanse of dark stained timber and silk tableware. It reminds me of the 1990's and felt very clean and polished. They have a huge well-stocked bar (I saw 5 different bottles of gin, and being an avid gin-drinker I was very impressed). We ordered lunch specials and waited for approximately 20 minutes for the meals. When we were back at the office seated in our lunchroom there were many positive comments. "The best curry I've had in ages" one person said, and another (originally from the UK) said it "tastes like the awesome curries we get back in England". I was extremely impressed with the soft, pillowy rice and creamy succulent curries. They were devoid of excess oil and had a lovely complexity to them. The meats were perfectly cooked and there was no dryness. Also the lunch servings are very generous - although the packaging leaves something to be desired. All in all for under $13 the meals were delicious. We will definitely be going back, but probably only on days we can afford to take slightly longer than our regulated lunch hour.

If I want quality cuts of meat, Billy's is where I make a beeline for. Last week was no exception when I wanted to buy a few of the Italian Sausages that I'd discovered were what Merriweather Cafe use in their breakfast baguette. Unfortunately, they were sold out when I arrived but that didn't stop me leaving with bacon, Canadian Maple pork sausages and a leg of pork to slow roast. There's plenty of condiments to consider as well and you'll rarely leave empty handed. The lads behind the counter are friendly, helpful and, using a fan dangled pulley-system contraption, will even open the door for you as you leave. And yes, it is slightly more pricey than what you might buy in the supermarket but I feel it is worth it for the higher quality of produce. It isn't often I crave meats of any kind but if I do, I want it to be good.

They know where the meat came from (which is important to environmentalists and animal lovers like me) and they can take you through the different cuts and best cooking methods for each. Like all awesome butchers they also have dog bones for sale, and are not above slipping a little extra in the package for a particularly personable puppy. You will pay a little more than at the supermarket, but the taste difference is astronomical and well worth the expense.

They had numerous options to build a meal with curries as well, and a selection of salads and (often vegan) desserts as well. They don't have the student discount of their neighboring competitor, but at $9 for a made to order meal, it certainly wasn't expensive. I have yet to try their nicer sit-down restaurant in West End, but after seeing how good the food court one is, I'm eager to.
