I could get used to this.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the idea that you can take a boat up and down the river and pay the rates for public transit. I've never heard of such a thing. If you're on a concession card (student/elderly/etc.), it costs no more than $1.60 or so, but even if you pay in cash, it's only a little $5. And what you get for your money is a pretty convenient set of stops, a very efficient boarding and offloading process, beautifully maintained infrastructure, and fantastic views on the water. No less than three employees are on each boat, one to dock it, one inside to handle fares and questions, and the person piloting it. Depending on weather, you can sit up front for the views, or in the ample and cushy interior seats. The stops are infrequent enough to make travel efficient, but it hits most of the places you'd want to go reasonably well. Most of the areas around the stops seem to have wifi and water fountains reasonably nearby; bottled water is also for sale on board. For those with cards, you can tap your card while the boat is still docking, alleviating the lines. One sees both tourists and commuters on these boats, and you'll be seeing me on them a lot.

When someone tells you they had they had a wonderful experience on public transport the other day you'll either think they are cat lady crazy or had to be drunk at the time. Well call me a cat lady because I'm about to tell you I just had the ride of my life on Brisbane's CityCat today. It was like I was in a parallel universe. Instead of trying to herd stray cats onto a boat, Brisbanites and tourists alike patiently stand in line waiting to get on board the ferry as happy looking customers walk off single file towards their land destinations. Staff joyfully welcome you on board and well help even clueless passengers with their tickets. I guess you would be overly gleeful too if you got to cruise along a river during sunrise and sunsets from one end of Brisbane to the other. I found the boats very clean and modern both on the inside and out and as a tourist you can sit up the back of the boat outside to see the sites, mansions and bridges of the Brisbane River. And don't worry about that hairdo, the outside is protected from the wind on a reasonably calm day so you don't walk off looking like you've just returned from 7 days at sea. There were plenty of stops along the way but it is a fun and easy way to get from the suburbs into the CBD or uni. I wish we could smuggle these ferry conductors into SA and plonk them on buses and trains around our state, but for now I will just have to fondly remember Kerry (our ticket conductor) and her friends and my once in a lifetime journey on Brisbane's RiverCat.

Oh Kerry. Those wide excited eyes, overly polite announcements and permanent grin that greeted us onto the Ferry had us questioning if we were actually on public transport. I guess she didn't get the memo that public transportation is supposed to be a torturous, unappealing chore to get from A to B. Feeling more like a special attraction hosted by the tour guide that's been there for the last 20 years, our trip to Wooloongabba on the City Cat was nothing short of delightful. Relaxing on the back deck in the glorious winter sun just before dusk broke, it's easy to see why Brisbanites are so laid back. Even your commutes are relaxing! The attendant, the lovely Kerry, was accommodating to us as visitors and offered to take happy snaps of our group as we waited to switch boats during refueling. For $6 per ticket, it's not the cheapest public transport trip you'll ever take, but it's worth every cent to not be on a bus.

Why would you want to be stuck on a musty smelling train with the crazies, or squished up to the sweaty armpit of a man on an overcrowded bus when you could be gliding down the Brisbane river, breeze running through your hair, watching the sunshine glint of the surface of the water? As far as public transportation in Brisbane goes, the most pleasurable by far is the Brisbane CitCat service. This ferry service runs right along the Brisbane River from the Unveristy of Queensland stop to Apollo Road in Bulimba. It will stop at all the important places like West End, the CBD, Southbank and New Farm, to name only a few. If you live or are staying near a CityCat stop then you are very lucky indeed. Unlike the sterotypically grumpy bus drivers around, the CityCat Staff are always pretty friendly, often joking with you and happy to have a bit of a chat while you all cruise down the river. Each CityCat has both inside seating (good for those rainy or cold days) and deck seating (great fun on a nice sunny day) to enjoy. Like all transport, the CityCats get pretty full during peak hour, however. Despite the Brisbane Floods trying to rip up many of the ferry wharfs, they are all up and running again and many are sporting a nice facelift due to the damage making them even more pleasurable. They CityCats tend to run on time and regularly but check out the traslink website for journey details and updates. Public transport in Brisbane doesn't get much better than floating down the river.

Loved that you can just hop on a city cat after shopping or dining in the city and cruise along the Brisbane river to your next destination.. This is the most fun and relaxing way of using public transport and the drivers are pleasant and give you a running commentary if you want and it is also great value and it beats sitting in traffic..

So we were surprised and thrilled to find this service available on our recent visit to Brisbane. CityHoppers are the red & white ferries connecting mostly Fortitude Valley and Kangaroo Point. Find a pier, wait for up to 30 mins in the sunshine (not guaranteed) and jump onto the big red boat when it comes around. The service is completely free, and can take you to around 8 different stops along the river, including excellent views as you pass under Story Bridge. There's an open-air deck for sunny days, and a sheltered indoor area for rainy days. I did find the boat a little slow, with long waits at some docks - so it's not recommended if you're in a hurry. Unfortunately, as of winter 2015 improvement works are underway, so the service doesn't go all the way up to North Quay, Maritime Museum and Sydney Street, so the final stop is QUT Gardens Point. Overall though it's lovely that this is a free service, and it's a brilliant way to see the city on a nice day - highly recommended.

The trains in Brisbane aren't the strength of its public transit system, they certainly aren't…read moreperfect, but let's keep things in perspective. They're better than the ones in Los Angeles, which has twenty times as many people to deal with. They are somewhat limited in their reach. The system is highly centralized, meaning it is really only useful for trips to or from the heart of the city. But it has its uses. Notable among them is that it goes to the airport (which seems obvious until you travel to a city that neglected to connect its airport to anything), and it goes to the beach towns. An express train from Brisbane to Gold Coast is likely not much slower than driving. The cost is not small (though the categories of people eligible for reduced fares are broad; which I imagine is more irksome if you are not among them). However, with a card, after nine trips in a week, all further travel that week is free, making long weekend trips routinely free for regular users. The trains are generally reasonably clean, the stations accessible, and secondary transport options ample.

Trains are always an interesting form of public transport and the Brisbane Trains are just that. I…read moreenjoy people watching on the trains because you really get a diverse group of people from suits to that guy that mumbles to himself in the corner. Depending on the day and the train you happen to get, you can get wildly different experiences. Go during peak hour and you will be hard pressed to find a seat or even a post to hold onto. The majority of passengers at this time will have their earphones in, books or ipads out, or be reading the MX newspaper that is often shoved in your face before you enter the station. Go late at night and you will get youths gallivanting around the place, talking loudly and joking around, or else girls dressed up to the nines for a night out in the Valley. Sometimes the train smells clean and fresh, sometimes it smells a bit musty or slightly like urine. There are always unexplained stains on the seats which make me wonder whether cloth was the best material to use here. Metal may not be as comfortable but might just be more hygienic. You will often see security on the trains which makes me feel a little bit safer as a lone girl going home at night. The trains will also run quite late and start early in the morning. They are a great way to avoid the traffic and often are more direct than the roads anyway. The more prominent stations like Roma Street, Central and Brunswick Street are experiences in and of themselves. Filled with people, food, and newsagents you will often have to push your way up crowded stairways. Alternatively, going out to the more suburban stops you find not even a person around. Just an empty and plain looking stop with a few metal seats and go card machine. Speaking of Go Cards, they are the way to go with any public transport in Brisbane. Buy one for $5 and top it up as you go. Just remember to tap on and off with every leg of your journey. The tap spots are a little less obvious at the suburban train stations and would be very easy to forget so keep a look out for them. Overall, the Brisbane Trains are pretty convenient and not the worst trains I have ever been on. Still, they are a solid and useful form of public transport. Check out the Translink Website for more info on times and trains.

Substantial bus-only roads and bridges cover routes complementary to the train system, enabling the buses to still be useful during rush hour. The system is quite well integrated with its counterparts, allowing easy access to ferry stops and train stations. I've had mostly good experiences with the drivers. Giant bus depots with many routes coming through make travel much more efficient when changing routes. The buses are quite clean for public transit, and by and large the services are regular and fast enough to be useful. The worst things I've experienced are the occasional overcrowded bus (but nowhere near as often as I'm used to) and the occasional late or missing bus (again, not that often). There's no such thing as 100% reliability, but I feel comfortable making long trips to unknown areas and trusting my Translink app to find me a way back, which I would never have risked where I come from. The protected bus routes are very much oriented around the universities and hospitals, which pushes the clientele even more towards students and hospital workers than one would expect. However, since I happen to be both of those things, I am okay with that.

Everything you could need for your wedding transport, all included.' When my limo arrived, the Driver did not say hello, introduce himself or even smile. He was very short at instructing me how to sit down in the limo. Arriving at the church he realised that one of the vehicle's doors was jammed and would not open. We were one door down, which meant that I had to walk out first and manage my wedding dress on my own in the rain before the bridesmaids got out. It also meant that following the ceremony, the wedding party had to enter at one end of the limo and crawl their way to the seats on the other side. I understand that things can go wrong. What we did not appreciate is the driver's reaction. He did not even apologise for the inconvenience and was constantly grumbling. At the end of the service we walked out through the exit of the Church, and expected that the driver would simply drive to us, as it was a wet day. Instead the driver just sat in the vehicle about 20-30 meters away in the Church carpark. Seeing no reaction from him, the Groom had to walk over to him and ask him to drive the limo to the exit. The driver replied with a flat "No". When the Groom then said to the driver, "So, do you expect the bride to walk in the rain carrying her dress to come over to you instead of you driving to the exit to pick everyone up and leave via the exit", the driver responded "Well, if you move this (pointing at a nearby guest car that was parked) and that (pointing at another guest car parked), then I will drive to pick you up". The Groom organised for the cars to be moved and we finally were able to crawl into the limo. The driver just stood there and barked instructions regarding the wheel cover. He was neither proactive nor courteous, and it seemed that if the groom hadn't walked over to where he was, we would be standing there a long time! When, again, the Groom enquired about the fact that the only drinks available were a few water bottles (not even enough for 1 each), the driver responded with a curt "Nothing. That's not included with this". This is completely incorrect. This email/review is not about getting a couple of complimentary $10 Jacob's Creek bottles - although it was guaranteed that we would have 3 bottles and soft drinks - this is entirely about the lack of service and attitude of the driver. If we had have known in advance that drinks were not included (even though we paid for them), we would have arranged our own refreshments. To summarise, to hire a Golden Gate Limo limo for 3 hrs cost us $699, and we received a vehicle with a jammed door, a rude driver with no chauffeur skills and no customer service or refreshments. Sometimes, a few minor things might go wrong with a service, but a smile, kind words and politeness go a long way to smoothing these little rough patches for clients. We would not, however, categorise the behaviour of the driver and lack of paid-for services, as 'minor things'. Accordingly, as a result of our experiences on an important (and supposed-to-be-fun) occasion, we would certainly not recommend Golden Gate Limos to anyone looking for a comfortable, courteous, prepared, relaxed and enjoyable transport experience.
