On a whim, I stopped in to the newly-opened Brooklyn Beauty Bar and asked if they'd have time to squeeze me in for a shellac mani. (Note to self: plan these things in advance). They could and within 45mins I was out the door with nails not tallons and sporting a glossy mushroom coloured shellac. There was no awkward small talk between my nail technician and I - my kind of experience. The fit out of Brooklyn Beauty Bar makes you feel like you've possibly walked into a super cool lounge bar where a suitably Don Draper-esque waiter will serve you a dirty Manhattan. They are unwieldy, forehead beasts that writhe in delight at defacing my countenance. Somehow, through either science or magic, I walk into the Ella Bache in the Valley and I have two people brows. Not only do I end with two eyebrows, instead of one wiggly Howard-eque worm, I end up looking pretty good - If I do say so myself. I think the best part of Ella Bache is the way they seamlessly mesh beauty and an oddly comforting clinical feel. The music they play in the treatment rooms is soothing, without being windchimey, Enya rip off nonsense. The staff are friendly, but professional. Not one staffer has asked me the usual beauty therapist questions, which is beyond endearing. I go to these establishments to end up looking tidier, not to be quizzed about my boyfriend, or where I'm going drinking on Friday night. I do, however, dislike the ol' faithful question "would you like to rebook?" I'm forced to reply "you saw these babies when I walked in, they remind me that I need to make an appointment." All in all, I'm always chuffed with the service I receive at the Valley branch of the Ella Bache.

If you're in the mood for a day-spa style pampering session, then I wouldn't point you in the…read moredirection of Glamour Beauty Salon (or GB Salon as us regulars like to call it). The key words here are CHEAP and FAST, and sometimes that's enough. Especially when you have a function to go to and your eyebrows look something out of the Amazon and you need to be de-haired NOW. GB Salon has really convenient opening hours, and if you call to make an appointment you can just about always get the time slot you want. They do waxing, eyelash and eyebrow tinting, manicures, pedicures, facials, massages, henna, and even ear candling. Because GB Salon is an Indian-run business, they do absolutely beautiful authentic henna tattoos and their book of patterns to choose from is huge. They were also among the first in Brisbane to do eyebrow threading, which is a method of eyebrow shaping common in India. As much as I love GB Salon, I use it almost exclusively for waxing, threading, eyelash tinting, and mani/pedis. It probably wouldn't be my first choice for a day-spa treatment like a facial or massage because the environment isn't all the relaxing or indulgent. If I've got really sore muscles and am desperate for a massage STAT I will sometimes get a half hour one at GB Salon because I can always get an appointment at late notice and I can go on my way home from work or whatever. The massages are extremely cheap and pretty decent too. Not the best massages by any means, and the B105 playing in the store isn't super relaxing, but a massage is a massage, right? For cheap, quick, no-nonsense beauty treatments, GB Salon is ideal. Their wide range of services and flexibility with appointment times makes it so easy and convenient. You might not come away feeling particularly pampered, but you'll look much more well-groomed.

The therapist that took my call mentioned they could fit me in at 3:30pm to which I disappointingly said was too late for me as I had a prior engagement. "Never mind, let me see here," she said. "How about 2:15?" Again, disappointed. I would again be in a meeting. Waiting for her to say "Oh well better luck next time!" She again came back to me with a "I'm just shuffling a few things, how does 1:30 sound?" Perfect, lock it in Eddie. I wasn't even regular customer and already I was feeling the love. I arrived and my therapist Rose was a delight. My brows were gently waxed and plucked. The wax was lukewarm - a pleasant thing! They once again looked like two eyebrows with distinction and a defined arch. I had also been enquiring about their Omnilux service and Rose answered all of my questions. There was not once a big sales push or up sell. Outshine, you have for all puns intended, outshone yourselves. I'm off to rebook for 4 weeks.
