Worst place I've ever encountered for Brows. I paid full price for a fully-trained brow stylist and…read morethey were sneaky and gave me a trainee. She gave me uneven brows, which look terrible. Then proceeded to cover my brows with makeup so I wouldn't see the crap job she did. Nightmare place... avoid!

Walking inside here is like being inside a luxe, French salon. Each customer gets to laze on chaise longue style beds (all of which are draped in burnished gold satin) and each "brow station" is separated by soft, white drapes. If I'm going to have pain inflicted upon me, then it's nice to be surrounded by luxury. I opted for the Brow Lift-Shaping treatment - I was sold when they told me it will give the appearance of an instant eyelift. First of all the Brow Artist (or Arch Angel as they are also called) looked at my face shape and features very carefully, before starting her waxing, tweezing and shaping. I had been waxing my own eyebrows for years, so they were both a bit uneven (oops) but she didn't make me feel bad, just showed me where I'd been going wrong and reshaped them both to match. Then she blended some colours together to give my brows some depth and to frame my eyes more. After years of hiding behind a long fringe, I've just had a pixie haircut so it's imperative I show my brows off to their best advantage. It did cost me $70, but it was definitely worth it to fix my home-waxing mistakes, and now my (very even) brows can proudly take centre stage.

Brooklyn is definitely not the cheapest place in town, but their facilities are simple and clean, and has the interiors of a Brooklyn loft. The place also wasn't overwhelmingly musty with the smell of incense or air freshener, which was a huge plus for this allergy-prone customer. The girls there are super friendly, quick at their job, and have the cutest outfits complete with a bow tie. Love it!

There are few things in life that can make a gal feel like a classier broad than red lipstick, a fresh manicure, heels and a blow dry. On a whim, I stopped in to the newly-opened Brooklyn Beauty Bar and asked if they'd have time to squeeze me in for a shellac mani. (Note to self: plan these things in advance). They could and within 45mins I was out the door with nails not tallons and sporting a glossy mushroom coloured shellac. There was no awkward small talk between my nail technician and I - my kind of experience. The fit out of Brooklyn Beauty Bar makes you feel like you've possibly walked into a super cool lounge bar where a suitably Don Draper-esque waiter will serve you a dirty Manhattan. The girls have done a great job and I've already booked for a return visit!

Tucked away in the Brisbane Arcade (the entrance is between The…read moreBody Shop and Collete), up a flight of stairs on the left, a couple of doors down and on the right is a walk-in threading salon, that also offers other beauty services. I have had my eyebrows threaded, my upper lip and chin waxed here and at the Kelvin Grove salon. The Indian ladies are polite and friendly and do a great job, no missed hairs, too thin or lopsided brows, always perfect with a great arch. I prefer threading for the eyebrows as it gives a more precise and clean appearance. However if you wish to remove the hair from your upper lip and chin and are pain sensitive I would recommend waxing instead of threading. The prices are $12 for eyebrows, $7 for upper lip and $7 for chin (threading), a bargain compared to other waxing places. I choose to not opt for the after care cream they apply as it can make me break out a little bit more than I usually do when getting hair removed. You can apply some foundation and/or concealer to minimize any redness before you leave for the salon. This place only gets 4 stars because they do a 30 second massage and the WinkBar does one longer: 1-2 minutes (though its almost triple the price). They are open Monday to Friday, 9 am to 7 pm and have a website with prices listed. p.s The wax has a pleasant strawberry sent and remember to tell the ladies if you are sensitive heat (when applying the wax). Avoid wearing Moisturiser on your face and/or hand lotion: With threading you need to hold your eyelid closed with one hand and with your other hand pull flat and taunt the skin above your eyebrow up towards your forehead while they thread your eyebrows with the cotton. If your getting your eyebrows threaded (especially on a hot day) and you are wearing moisturiser, your fingers can keep slipping making this task annoying and more painful (holding skin flat and taunt minimizes hair removal pain), if you get sweaty hands/fingers regularly just apply some talcum powder to them before you go to the salon. Heavy eye make-up and mascara When holding the eye lid flat it can smudge and/or smear your eye makeup and/or make your eyes water. I generally prefer to go sans eye makeup to avoid having to clean it up after however if you forget they can supply you with cotton buds to clean underneath, just remember to bring concealer to reapply under your eyes. Eyebrow makeup As embarrassing as your might think your eyebrows look without makeup, they don't really clean off your eyebrow makeup properly before they start waxing, they just rub a cotton ball over them once. If you have makeup hiding or distorting the shape of your actual brows your eyebrows may not turn out how they would've if the lady could see your natural brows. If you can't bear to go out in public without your eyebrows on bring makeup wipes in your handbag and give your eyebrows a quick wipe once your in the salon. Low cut tops and short/medium skirts If for whatever reason you would prefer the ladies to not see down your top when your lying back in the chair, avoid wearing a medium to low cut top. Also the mirrors are full length mirrors so I would recommended wearing pants or a long skirt to avoid showing off your undies.

They are unwieldy, forehead beasts that writhe in delight at defacing my countenance. Somehow, through either science or magic, I walk into the Ella Bache in the Valley and I have two people brows. Not only do I end with two eyebrows, instead of one wiggly Howard-eque worm, I end up looking pretty good - If I do say so myself. I think the best part of Ella Bache is the way they seamlessly mesh beauty and an oddly comforting clinical feel. The music they play in the treatment rooms is soothing, without being windchimey, Enya rip off nonsense. The staff are friendly, but professional. Not one staffer has asked me the usual beauty therapist questions, which is beyond endearing. I go to these establishments to end up looking tidier, not to be quizzed about my boyfriend, or where I'm going drinking on Friday night. I do, however, dislike the ol' faithful question "would you like to rebook?" I'm forced to reply "you saw these babies when I walked in, they remind me that I need to make an appointment." All in all, I'm always chuffed with the service I receive at the Valley branch of the Ella Bache.
