As a blonde with foils, I struggle to find somebody who can get the colour just right and do foils so well, but Leigh kicks over any others I have had touch my hair before. My sister now goes here too and loves Ellie. And we used them all for both of our weddings and everybody commented on our hair. I reccomend this place until the cows come home. I wasn't impressed by the established hair salons that I knew in The Gap, and most seemed to cater more for women, with zero interest in styling men's hair. So, when Johanna was recommended and had a salon at her home, I was naturally intrigued. And immediately impressed. I discovered Johanna once owned a beauty salon in her native New Zealand with a solid background in hair dressing and makeup artistry. Therefore, I booked an appointment over Messenger - her Facebook page and Messenger are the best way to initially contact her - and was all in. Her home salon is a small, private oasis that is impeccably clean and stylish with salon chairs, sinks and two work stations. We immediately hit it off and I love the privacy and intimacy of working with a professional stylist away from the intrusion of others in a busy salon. Johanna uses nothing but quality hair care products which you can also buy, and her salon is now my "go to" for stylish cuts and conversations about trying new things or staying within your comfort zone. Somehow Instagram or Facebook led me to Ellie at Nut Salon and thank heavens. She's a no-bullshit, straight-shooting retro (she has a love of the 40s & 50s) delight who has, now several times, given me a cut that is manageable and has my hair in the best condition it's ever been in. She "gets" my waves and curls and somehow wrangles them into submission. Plus she's great with colour. And the best bit? I'm walking out of the salon without having to sell my imaginary first born child. (Seriously: a cut, colour and blow dry with Ellie costs me less than $180 and for me, that's value).

I'd never tried it, and I can tell you waxing your eyebrows doesn't even come close. Apparently when you wax you still often leave the root of the hair in the skin so the regrowth is quicker. Threading is also heaps more precise than waxing, I've never had eyebrows like this. They also do the full range of beauty treatments at very reasonable prices (including super cheap waxing), and Rani is amazing at fitting you in for last minute appointments. I don't think I'll ever go to another salon when I've got Kelvin Grove Hair and Beauty.

She uses threading on my face and eyebrows, and I don't even have to pluck between monthly sessions. Her threading technique is incredibly precise, and as a person with fairly thick eyebrow hair, the precision is invaluable. Rani is friendly, and has become a really good friend over the years I've been coming to her for waxing. I can trust her, and that's not really something you always find at a beauty salon. She's always more than willing to reshuffle her schedule to fit in an emergency appointment, and even when she's really busy she manages to me through in perfect time. If Rani ever left Kelvin Grove I would be sure to follow her wherever she went. She's that good.

It's not just the great tea and coffee with yummy little cookies or the face that a haircut, colour and blowdry are half the price of anywhere else. It's the helpful advice on styling products to use without pushing a sale on you. It's the tips on hair care and the fact that they remember your colour without having to look it up. Of course it's also the fantastic hair cuts and colour jobs as well but really, it's the whole package that makes Allure really great.

Everywhere else opens at 9am and it was 7am and I just didn't want to wait 2 hours. Sublime catered to that. They are like the lighter, brighter, friendlier version of Oscar Oscar, the hairstylists have about 4 or 5 different levels of expertise, all of which you pay for. Yes, this is going to be a pricey little adventure I was very resigned to that. No, I initially didn't plan on spending that much on a haircut. Having said that, I do pay over $100 for a massage or day spa treatment... and getting your hair done properly is like pampering yourself. I had an Art Director cut my hair (I selected the 'anyone' option online) and it did cost me $115... but it included a deluxe treatment, scalp massage, initial scalp massage and blow dry... which I've got to say, for the service and timing, was very much worth my time. Will be back again... and my hair smells awesome... and they don't even try and sell you products which is a huge plus.

I have never left the place hating how my hair looked. The customer service and little extras that this place offers is also pleasant. I will give you a word of warning though, do not expect to be able to walk in without an appointment. When making an appointment, you will be asked which what level you wish your hairdresser to be at, keep in mind that the price differs accordingly to the experience level of the hairdresser. I usually ask for the a second level hairdresser which costs me $75 which includes blow drying and straightening. Upon arrival, you will be offered a tea or coffee and biscuit. You will then get a relaxing massage before the hairdresser begins cutting away. Whenever I have asked my hairdresser questions relating to products for my hair, she has been very helpful and it is clear she knows what she is talking about. I never feel like I am being pushed to buy a product also, she is very respectful of that. Overall, I recommend this hairdressers. The staff are generally very nice and have the skills to back that up.
