While change wasn't absolutely necessary - the salon I frequented was only 9km away - I had grown disillusioned by the price for a men's cut in the city, not to mention parking and other associated out-of-pocket expenses. So, throwing caution and my hair to the wind, I decided to try a salon not far from where I dwell in The Gap. Now, you think of suburban hair salons and you think of inexperienced beauty school graduates still trying to figure out which fingers go into the holes of the scissors. Not so at Precision Cuts, which I've discovered is an oasis of London-trained stylists who have been secretly - at least to me! - occupying space in my leafy suburb and literally turning heads with their work. After a wash and scalp massage my stylist, Emma, proved to be just as talented as anyone working in the city and quickly dispelled my fears of failure. The salon itself is big, airy and bright with complimentary drinks like coffee, tea and juice, and once you're a customer you'll find a range of great and regular discounts and promotions to get you back. Just like I'll be, give or take another six weeks!

And one of those has been thriving without my support for almost as many years as my residency: Gelousy Hair Salon. Why I had never frequented this salon was a bias in my thinking, like it's too small to be any good, it's located on a quiet residential street, it doesn't appear trendy, the clientele seemed old, elderly, thus the hairdressers must be older and used to cutting blasé styles. And the shopfront's not that sexy or appealing, etc, etc. However, at wit's end with my split ends, and in dire need of a cut, and with a friend that goes to Gelousy, I decided to trust them with my tresses too and I'm delighted I did. The owner, Toni, cut my hair and we had a great and informative chat as she snipped away at my unruly, lengthy locks. I also gained a different perspective of their clients with a young boy getting his hair cut when I arrived, and a teenage girl with long, luxurious hair arriving as I left...hardly the blue-rinse set I had imagined. And Toni left me more than pleased with a great style that cost all of $31 for a men's cut. Plus, she gave me the option of coming back in for a style tweak if I felt it necessary...now, that's top service and customer care. So, if you live in or around The Gap, and if you haven't been already, give Gelousy a go. It may just change the way you think about hair salons too.

She's a no-bullshit, straight-shooting retro (she has a love of the 40s & 50s) delight who has, now several times, given me a cut that is manageable and has my hair in the best condition it's ever been in. She "gets" my waves and curls and somehow wrangles them into submission. Plus she's great with colour. And the best bit? I'm walking out of the salon without having to sell my imaginary first born child. (Seriously: a cut, colour and blow dry with Ellie costs me less than $180 and for me, that's value).

The team there are equally all very good with some employees being with the business since it opened. If my usual hairdresser is not available, I have no hesitation with booking my appointment with another hairdresser there. A very resonably priced salon as well (how many places can say that in Brisbane!). Another thing I love about Tonsure is that they never over or double-book - I have the same hairdresser from start to finish and the well-trained apprentices to wash hair and observe the techniques without being in the way. It also has the added benefit of being right next to Dandelion and Driftwood!

My hair had been getting ridiculously long for my standards, popped in on a Sunday…read more My first barber (I wasn't able to remember his name) wanted to try a different style on me compared to what I wanted, and it looked great. He was super kind, and professional. I was charged $40 due to it being a Sunday. He said that because he was trying something different on me, if I didn't like it and wanted it a bit shorter, I could come back within 48 hours and get it cut again at no extra charge. I thought was a great policy, I didn't think I would need to use it but my sister wanted my hair shorter for the Summer so I went back the next day after work and saw another man called Gio. Gio did an awesome job, shaved my sides down and got it a lot shorter like my sister wanted, it looked awesome as well as the first haircut. Gio did 10/10 job on the second haircut, attention to detail was perfect. Even put some wax in my hair and a hot towel for my face. Definitely coming back here.

He also does women's haircuts/washes/foils etc, although I'm unsure of the pricing. From the outside, there is not much to be seen apart from some simple (and clever!) signage on the windows, however stepping inside, you'll find a very comfortable area that I believe was put together by Ben himself! Comfortable hairdressing chairs to sit in, and for those of you having a wash, Ben's wash basin is super comfortable too, supporting your head well and keeping pressure off your neck, which can be uncomfortable. Ben is super friendly, and very knowledgeable in all things hair related. You can show him photos of what you'd like, or explain it to him, and he will read your hair "qualities" and tell you if he thinks it would look good on you. I've had two completely differently styled haircuts from him, both excellent!

You're greeted as soon as you walk in with a complimentary "tea of the day". Yummy and all different flavours, cool tea in summer, warm tea in winter. Then there's a THOROUGH consult with the stylist. I've had my hair done by all three ladies at one time or another and they are all excellent. After that the work begins. Hair On Oxley uses quality Joico colour and styling products and the colours are to die for! Plus the products leave your hair in BEAUTIFUL condition with a glorious shine, even if it's previously been damaged. The stylists genuinely care about the quality and health of your hair and will be honest if they think going from black to bleach white in one go will be damaging . They don't push unnecessary service and they don't shove products to pressure sell in your face! While all this is happening you're offered complimentary drinks. Everything from espresso to white wine or even a cold beer! Then, as the hair colour is processing you are offered a complimentary hand sugar moisturising scrub (they even have a menu with all the different flavours!) finished off with a hot towel and moisturising body butter! It's worth it to go just for all the little extra pampering you get .... but back to the hair. When it's time to rinse your hair there's no sitting in a chair with your neck craned back at an uncomfortable angle. They have lie back lounges like a bed! You rest your head on a comfy "pillow" over the basin and enjoy the eye rolling magic of a head massage as they work the intensive treatment in. Then back to your chair where their talent really comes to life with the scissors, blow dryer and straightening iron. You feel like a million bucks when you walk out of there BUT BEST OF ALL .... it's VERY reasonably priced! Way less than inner city prices but for same if not better quality colour & cut PLUS all the little extras! The atmosphere is relaxed, the girls enjoy a laugh and chat, parking is a breeze. Why would you go anywhere else??? I'm staying forever

They get it just so right and frame my face perfectly after only half an hour of being waxed, colored and plucked back into beautiful brow territory. There is something to be said about specialist beauticians. These "Arch Angels" really make good on their promise as I always come away satisfied by not only the shape of the brow, but the colour. It actually matches my skin tone (Being a red head this actually harder than you may think). The ladies can also meet all your lash needs with dyeing and extensions plus they're an old hand at make up application as well. So go on, treat your face and give it a mini facelift just by getting your brows corrected and symmetrical to make all your good features pop!
