My kids love Brister's Martial Arts. We did the free week trial a few years ago and have continued since then.

The staff is great, but the way they get you to sign up for a year's contract is not…read more They offer a free consultation/first session. It's terrific; they take a photo of your kid and have them break a piece of wood, much to their delight (and the parents!). Then they make a wooden trophy that shows their first photo, with a "I'm a black belt!" waiting on the background. Then the sales pitch comes. You have to sign up for 1-year contract. My child enjoyed it for a month, then tired of it. I saw other kids doing the same. Meanwhile you got messages from locals who said the karate place across the street didn't have a 1-year contract; they had a policy in place to let the child decide of they really are interested in karate or not. While I very much enjoyed the instructors here, I'm not a fan of how they get you caught. I lost more than $1,000. Oh, and $250 worth of equipment, too.

There is no available cancellation policy and no way to get out of the contract unless you move 15 miles or more from the facility. My husband and I got divorced and it was a financial strain to continue payments for a service that my son no longer could use due to his school schedule and custody arrangements. After attempts to explain our situation to someone at AMA failed, with no response from the managing staff, I contacted their financial institution to explain. While they claimed understanding of the hardship we were under, they stated there was nothing they could do and we would need to continue payments for a service we weren't even able to use. Clearly, the most important thing to AMA is your money.
