The Zoo is free admission and staffed and open each day. It is a part of the Britt Spaugh Park which has a huge municipal swimming pool and water park that are located there and open to the public with a small admission fee during the summer. We fed turtles, kangaroos, giraffes, lemurs, and even tossed carrots to the hippos. The private lemur encounter was definitely my favorite part. I loved how interactive everything was--you aren't just walking around looking at animals from a distance. The staff was friendly, the park was clean, and there were so many opportunities to get up close with the animals. I would absolutely recommend adding Tanganyika to your Wichita itinerary!

Highly recommend getting the extra ticket for the tram ride. They give you a wrist band and you can hop on and off. The gentleman who was our tour guide was so sweet and made the ride fun. He knows the names of all the animals. We don't have rhinos at our zoo, so I was thrilled to see two here. Stop by and say to Carlos the Camel!! Quite affordable and your ticket and other purchases help fund the zoo which is really important.

The animals and birds here are only those that are indigenous to Kansas--there's a small petting zoo area, a reptile house (Kansas seriously has too many snakes) and the best part of all which is the prairie dog exhibit. How cute are they? Under the exhibit are little tunnels that kids can climb into. Throughout the tunnels are glass domes that stick up in the middle of their exhibit so you can see them close up. You can probably get through this entire zoo in less than an hour...but it's free and a nice little detour in the center of Carey Park. It's worth the time!

Yes, the embalmed body of the guy who built the Garden of Eden is on display in a glass-topped coffin. The entire place is bizarre and is built out of concrete. And the construction did not begin till the artist - an eccentric civil war vet with WILD political and religious ideas - was well into his 60s. The guided tour is nice and gives a good history about the place and the artist. Recommend visiting if you are in the Lucas/Wilson area. Weird. Delightfully weird.

We are so happy we took the time to go off the beaten path to see this place! Each staff member we came across was so nice and seemed like they truly enjoyed their job. I mean who wouldn't when you're dealing with animals? There are several different rooms that you can choose from when booking and each one has a different theme. I don't think you can go wrong with any of them. There's lots of space and we were comfortable throughout our stay. Since this place is really out in the middle of nowhere it doesn't seem to get much business because there was only one other family that was there when we were. It's nice and quiet and you can get a feel of what life is like for these workers. I loved that we were able to get a little tour the next day and feed some animals for breakfast. The goats are so fun and the kangaroos were cool to see up close and pet. They had lots of other animals and it was cool to see what all they were working with. Overall, this is a fun stay if you have kids or just want to have some fun at a small zoo for a few nights.
