No trip is complete when going to Benson, NC if a person does not stop by the Broadslab Distillery. The decor is fitting and the service is always awesome. No food for us today, but in the past the food trucks have had great tasting food. From an Old Fashion, a Whiskey Sour, a Hummingbird Helles Lager and a flight of their new selection was a treat for the five of us. Each had their favorites. We stayed at an excellent Harvest Host site that the owners have created across the street from the distillery bar. We didn't have an opportunity to do a tour because it was a very busy Saturday night. I was very surprised at how busy the bar was. I was still able to get in for a tasting of their products. They were as is to be expected for young spirits. I had a good visit and would return for the Harvest Host and a drink at the bar. On the downside, $25 for 8 tastes of their own products is a bit steep. read more

Went on a tour and ended up having the owner as the guide. It says a lot about a place when it is super slow and the welcome is genuine. The bar tender/cashier made me want to hang out for the rest of the day. If I lived here, it could become my local spot. My friend lives here and bought the tour ahead of time. We were the only 2. Owners delete Google Reviews that aren't 5 stars, post really inappropriate responses to the reviews before deleting both the responses and the reviews. I have several screenshots of reviews and responses from the owners that were subsequently deleted. Then owner tried to backtrack when I messaged them on Facebook about them silencing a Veterans group on Veteran's Day Weekend. The only saving grace of this place is the bartender, TK, who is an absolute gem. Will not spend any more money here, and will make sure everyone I know avoids this place like the plague, along with their $80 crappy bourbon they're selling in ABC stores now. read more

My friend from PA came down for the weekend for us to have a total 'Mask-free' weekend. Very exciting as it's been a long time since we've been able to get together. Instead of just staying in & having a bacchanalian fest, we decided to go outside of the Raleigh area searching for things to do. When we went to a certain website (who shall not be named), listed on top 10 day trips was a trip in to Benson. Once there, the top destination is here; Broadslab Distillery. We are both very keen on distilleries & the visiting thereof. BIG fans of spirits and always willing to imbibe someone's creation. Unfortunately, because of how many distilleries we have both collectively been to, neither one of us ever feels compelled to go on another tour. We were a little concerned about this as NC has these silly laws about physically taking a tour before you taste test. Sigh. When we got to the distillery, I was struck at once by the serene location. It is very rural and the distillery barn itself is behind a path thru the woods. Very picturesque. Instead of signing up for a tour, we opted instead to 'belly up' to the bar and do some tastings ourselves. This meant that instead of getting to try each individually, we could only taste a single offering....then imbibe in some VERY yummy drinks made with their offerings. I opted to taste the spiced rum, my friend wanted to try the apple pie moonshine. I got a drink made from the apple moonshine and she got the whiskey on the rocks. First the rum, I am not a huge rum drinker because rum drinks are so very misleading & can get you in trouble very quickly. I do however like the flavor of spiced rum. Broadslab's spiced rum has a rough initial taste but a very lovely peppery, spicy finish. The apple moonshine is quite lovely. It's not very strong and was very close to a cider...but was very yummy in a drink. The whiskey was.....um....well....honestly put it was a little bland. The bar itself is gorgeous. There were some regulars at the bar while we were there & they were very helpful & friendly. The bar service was impeccable and all of it served at a GORGEOUS bar setting. If you, like me, enjoy going to different distilleries and tasting their offerings, make sure to place Broadslab on your list. Sure, it's a bit outside of Raleigh, but you will be hard pressed to find folks as friendly hanging out. read more

When you tour and see their processes, you can heart and see the labor of love and passion behind what they do. They grown their own rye, wheat, corn, etc and no artificial flavors. I definitely have an appreciation for it! The upkeep of the site makes you feel like home. I went for educational purposes and I learned so much. I purchased a Groupon for a tasting and tour for (4), and I am so happy that I did!! The location is beautiful, the tour is very informative, and I loved the history of this place. My boyfriend and I did the tour with two of our friends. The owner and his Grandpa were very close, and the moonshine recipe was passed down to him from his Grandpa. This bit of info tugged on my heart, since I was also very close to my Papa, who passed away a few years ago. After walking through the Distillery and learning about the history, we were led back to the tasting room. Everyone on the tour lined up at the bar and we were given a sample of each spirit to taste. My favorites were the apple pie and original clear moonshine. All of the ingredients are non-GMO and organic, which I loved. You can purchase gifts in the tasting room too! They had creative wooden signs, pickled vegetables, jams, apple butters and candles. I bought an Apple Shine soy candle and I cannot stop smelling it. I think it's my favorite candle ever. I also bought a jug of the apple pie moonshine. We were each given a Broadslab shotglass which was part of the Groupon experience. I highly recommend this tour! When my parents visit from Michigan, we are definitely bringing them here. read more

My impression of moonshine comes from the Beverly Hillbillies, the Hatfields & the McCoys, Ma & Pa Kettle and a lot of other elite sources of culture where it was served from a jug with three x's on it by a barefoot man, usually bearded, toothless and named Pappy. Yeah, I wasn't highly informed on the topic, but Jamie W. and I received a first-hand education from Jeremy Norris who owns Broadslab. We actually met him briefly in Kinston through Vivian Howard's assistant Holley, as she was giving us a tour of the town. I remembered him from the moonshine episode of "A Chef's Life" when Vivian and her husband Ben paid him a visit. When we met Ben at Chef and the Farmer, he encouraged us to pay a visit to Broadslab on the way out of town. It was sort of on the way back to Raleigh from Kinston via some really scenic roads where we passed by a Confederate cemetery and a lot of cows. We arrived at Broadslab right at noon when he opens up his tasting room to the public. It's a nicely renovated building with his moonshine and plenty of Broadslab merchandise on display (photo: http://bit.ly/1DxwqTF). It turns out except for a sales assistant, he is pretty much the whole show at his two-building operation. For $12, we got a private tour and a tasting. His still is housed in a huge barn-like building just a bit down the road, so he took us in his truck and showed us a big brick-encased copper still that fed into a barrel with the temperature regulated by an upside-down Mason jar (photo: http://bit.ly/1IY2jZq). There is quite a balance of art and science in making moonshine very similar to any winery, and he patiently explained the process to us and let us look at all the barrels of bubbling corn and barley mash including one that had a bouquet garni of fruit and spices for his Carolina Coast Spiced Rum line (photo: http://bit.ly/1bFOgNL). Back at the tasting room, I was able to have a taste of four of Jeremy's hand-crafted moonshine creations, Jamie only one since he volunteered to drive most of our route to Nashville afterward. There's his traditional Legacy Moonshine made with white corn whiskey (photo: http://bit.ly/1z1arrJ) and his Legacy Reserve which had a deeper oakier taste (photo: http://bit.ly/1QuJodT). The Spiced Rum was great, but my favorite was the Appleshine, deceptively tasty as I certainly felt it later in the car. All of them were amazingly smooth, nothing like you would expect based on the media image moonshine has had over the years. There's definitely a renaissance going on with moonshine as we saw billboards for higher-profile distillers on our road trip like Ole Smoky. The quality of Jeremy's moonshine definitely deserves recognition beyond eastern North Carolina, and I can't wait for him to get the licensing to sell to California distributors. Broadslab Distillery was a drive for us, totaling almost 50 minutes. The signs for parking were clear; however, the signs for entering the distillery were not. We thought the tour was good, we really enjoyed the family history but we were only able to try four liquors because one was out. The legacy appleshine was by far our favorite so we left with a bottle. I'm glad that we were able to sample what Broadslab had to offer but I would not travel out of my way for it next time. read more

WOW. Just wow. This is an awesome, all around, badass place. Starting with the location, it's a gorgeous area nestled in the forest, with privacy from the rest of the highway. The buildings are all new with beautiful woodwork. They have a lot of weddings and receptions in the event space too. As for the distillery itself, the owner and founder gave us the tour, and they have a great video to explain not just the distillery but also the history of moon-shining. Now to the shine--they take you out to the distillery on a covered tractor/trailer ride, and give you at least 4 different tastings of the shine, special reserve, Apple shine, and rum. MMMMMMMmmm. It was good. After hanging out for a little, they drive you back to the main bar where you can buy merch and bottles, along with a full service bar. The moonshine itself is really smooth. It's not rough. It's not tart. It's smoother than vodka. If you can take a shot of vodka without wincing, this is like sipping lemonade. In other words, we bought multiple bottles because it's reallly good. Look at these other reviews--they are all 5stars. And that's the truth--this is a 5 star, local distillery that deserves a bunch of national recognition. If I ever come back to North Carolina, I'll definitely be coming back to Broadslab. Beautiful location. We had a great tour. The tour guide/owner did a wonderful job talking about the distillery and different alcohols available. It was very neat and interesting. Owner is a hard working individual, keeping his family business going. It's awesome. The bar is so fun and a great spot to hang out. It felt very "homey" and we cannot wait to go back! We received shot glasses that was included with the tour. Tastings were fun! Great selection of gifts at the bar. Prices were great for everything you could purchase to include alcohol. There is also a food truck that opened in the evening, but we did not have time to stick around to enjoy it :( Highly recommend to do this tour. It's just enough and fun, especially if you're not high maintenance-- if you are then maybe go somewhere else. Great experience! read more

Visited the distillery with my wife and cousin who lives close by. The grounds are beautiful and their process of "attempting" to accelerate the aging of their whiskey is very interesting, but their product is simply not really ready for the market yet. The owner ran our tour and tasting, and while he was super nice and knowledgeable, the product is very, very young...and I believe he knows it. He begins the tasting by offering their "white dog" or distillate first. This pollutes your little tasting cup with that buttery corn flavor familiar to those of us that have tasted distillate before. He then proceeds to offer tastings of his 2 bourbons and 2 ryes, in that same little cup, masking the youth of his products. I bought a $65 bottle of their bourbon to share with some folks down the road. It was so embarrassing to offer this up to real bourbon drinkers. You can tell, right up front on the nose that this whiskey is simply not ready. Heavy, young buttered popcorn on the nose. It's simply not ready. Really a shame to put this immature product on the market. Not worth anywhere near $65. In a few years, this could be good, but after getting burned by this initial purchase, I will probably not buy another bottle from Broadslab again. Even a newb to bourbon can quickly tell that this bourbon is a hard pass. I thought it was odd how the tasting was conducted, now I know why. read more

Nice museum and working production area shows how historically correct distillation operates on a daily schedule. After the tour you can buy lots of souvenirs and associated farm to table food products at the seperate store and welcome center and Museum. read more

A very short tour, the guide brought us to 2 rooms and told us about the process before we went to the tasting. The tasting included 4 samples, each 1 ounce. You can do the whole thing in under an hour and not have anywhere else to really go once there. read more

Me and my guy were spending Independence Day nice and easy this year, so we decided to book the tour with tasting at this great little distillery today.It's about a 50-60min drive from Raleigh to Benson and worth the drive. The tour was given by the owner, Jeremy. He gave a great tour, including some history of moonshining in the area going back to his great great gradfather's time. He explained the process from start to finish. It impresses me that this distillery is a "dirt to bottle" enterprise. They grow the corn, and do the distilling all on their own, right up to filling the bottles (which are not imported, they are American made), sealing the bottles, and putting the labels on. A big, beautiful 500 gallon still is the focal point of the operation. After the tour we got to taste all their products. There was the Legacy Shine, and Legacy Reserve, the first clear, the second enhanced through charred oak. My guy preferred the clear, he said it has the great moonshine taste he's used to. I loved the Reserve, it had a great flavor. Nice oaky notes and extremely smooth. Then there was the old fashioned type straight corn shine, a little harsher, but really great with some lemonade, which they have on hand. Appleshine was next, which was really tasty, apples and spices, and a nice warm taste to it. As I type this I am trying to concoct recipes for it in my head, it's so good. Then came the rums, silver rum and spiced rum. The silver rum was right up there among the better rums, smooth, not sharp at all. The spiced rum was fantastic, I want to make tropical drinks with that stuff as soon as I can get to an ABC store and get some. The actual tasting area is clean and inviting. The bar itself is gorgeous. Our server was fun, she liked to talk about the product and was very friendly. Right now, they can't sell any bottles on site, you have to go to an ABC store, however they expect to be able to sell each visitor one bottle come October 2015. This business is a real grass roots operation, and personally I'd love to see them make it big, they truly do have a superior product. read more

Awesome place I would highly recommend going there. The product is delicious and the tasting room is very nice. Allie the bartender/storekeeper is awesome and she deserves a raise. It's just minutes off of I-95 and worth the stop. The recipes are slightly different than other distilleries. Their prices on the bottles average around $20-$25 each. Saw the distillery featured on an old episode of the PBS show A Chef's Life and immediately looked up it up and my interest was quite piqued when i saw that they offered tours. After sitting on my hands for a week or two took my dad who is a fan of show to see the distillery, we were both quite pleased with the whole experience from start to finish. The owner and his employees were very friendly and offered a surprising bit of history on the area and how his families operated before during and after prohibition. All that was above and beyond merely pulling back the curtain on his business which is all one might get from some tours. Added to all that the inclusion of a product tasting and shot glasses and we were left with a most memorable experience that left us eager to spread the word about a great local business. read more

This was a great tour! Jeremy really knew his product and taught us so much we didn't know about the distillery process. The staff are all very friendly. Definitely a place worth visiting.
