When we arrived on a gloomy Saturday there was only one car in the parking lot. We were not sure it was even open but it was. The staff member was very friendly. I had no idea of the history of this place and its connection to the famous inventor Samuel Morse. I wish we lived closer so I could spend more time in this area exploring the history of places like Locust Grove.

While we waited for the tour, we walked the grounds which includes a working vegetable garden and rose garden that was being re-done. FDR and his wife are buried there. The house is very cool because it takes you back in time and the guide was very knowledgeable. It's a nice historical stop on a great piece of land. Beautiful in fact! Parking is free, nice visitor center with a cafe and short movie that runs every half hour. Enjoy!

The trail…read morethat runs through this park is called the Wappinger Greenway Trail with so many surroundings to explore, and also views to observe across the Hudson River, specifically, to the south and west, Newburgh, West Point, and The Hudson Highlands State Park, to the north, Mid Hudson Bridge, and east, a bit of Fishkill with not a whole lot of viewing. The trail starts as you enter the park, beginning on the right side before the parking lot. There are a couple of spots to park right at the trailhead. It mainly parallels the Hudson River in the woods with a couple of fields until finally reaching more fields. Following the signs, it will end toward Wheeler Hill Road with a downhill with woods. This may go down as my favorite park in the Hudson Valley. The judging belongs to you.

We were fortunate to come on a day they had a Revcon event, a reenactment and activities to celebrate our 250th birthday. They had a schedule for the day with oxen, butter making, historical games and information, a reenactment with musket, etc. Additionally we did a self-guided tour (45 minutes) of the house because it was the weekend; I think a guided tour would have been nice to get more tid bits. Unless you have a national park pass, there's a cost for the house and the museum. If you only want to do one, I'd personally choose the museum. The museum was very well done and interesting to walk through. It's a good size and you go through his life, presidency and Eleanor too. Stop into Hyde Park for a bite too.

Last year there were random kids running around knocking over all the other kids and it was very crowded. I personally don't like to be jam packed with other families and this year was so perfect. Reminded me of mini golf when you just wait your turn for the next hole. But there was barely any wait, and any time we took to wait we were interacting with our own family. This place will be a staple for every Christmas to come! The Santa was beautiful with a real natural beard and happy smile, he made long conversation with my kids and really loved being Santa. I'm not always a fan of B and Bs... they can tend to be a little twee and you feel like you have to tiptoe around... partially because the walls in a good hotel are much thicker, the spaces less cramped, your anonymity more protected. There may be a bit of that tip-toeing here (the floors are pretty squeaky and you are worried that you are making too much noise for someone on a different sleeping schedule) but that is the only downside. We had just spent two nights in a pretty nice hotel in Beacon. The room was over 50% more expensive than here and, while large enough, there was not one square foot of horizontal space to put anything down in the bathroom.... The room at Inn at Twaalfill had so much guest-friendly space (especially in the bathroom), you would not likely have a use for all of it. If all B&Bs were this great and this price, I would never stay anywhere else.

The rooms were furnished in a historical style and even the bathroom was adorably retro. Each morning we were warmly greeted by our host Lynn, who provided a delicious homemade breakfast. Like the beautiful home, she was charming and delightful. She even gave us great insight about the Dia Beacon. The Chrystie house is an easy 20 minute walk to Dia Beacon and the Main Street, so it is easily accessible from all the main highlights of the town. I highly recommend staying at this charming B&B!

But the food was so well prepared that it should be recognized. We started with a very tasty pork belly bao with hoisin sauce. Their house salad was a very well presented and interesting salad. But they knocked it out of the park with their entrees: roasted branzino with asparagus in a beurre blanc sauce and a strip steak served on a bed of caramelized onions and mushrooms in a bordelaise sauce. In particular, the steak, ordered medium rare, came out tender and perfectly cooked, and was of very high quality. Finally the sticky toffee pudding cake was served warm and was delicious. I would highly recommend the food here. Kudos to the chef!

The location itself is breathtaking, set in a beautifully restored historic mansion right on the Hudson River. However, the real highlight was getting a behind-the-scenes look at their distillation process. Charles was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate as he walked us through their production of rye, bourbon, gin, and vodka. A must-try is their vodka, which Charles proudly explained is distilled a remarkable 12 times. I can confidently say it is the best vodka I have ever sampled--exceptionally smooth. I was also impressed by their other spirits: Northwest Passage Gin: This gin stands out because it uses naturally soft water sourced directly from their artesian wells. Black Creek Bourbon: I was fortunate enough to sample a limited Founder's Batch of this bourbon. It is truly hand-crafted, made using limestone-softened natural artesian well water. The depth of care and quality put into every bottle is evident, and the personal details shared by the founder made the spirits taste even better. If you have the chance, I highly recommend asking for the tour--it provides an incredible appreciation for the craftsmanship at Hudson House Distillery.
