High-tech cardio and old-school free weights!…read more This review is only for the weight room. I needed a free-weight workout with good old-fashioned iron while I was in Hot Springs. My TX YMCA membership was honored here, so I gave it a try. The Hot Springs Y is a rehab facility, and the local populace is mostly aging retirees - so I wasn't sure what to expect. My first glance caught a vast room full of cardio equipment; not what I needed for my powerlifting workout. But then I saw the weights, and knew I was at home! Nothing fancy, but plenty of good old iron. The dumbells go up to 130#, so even stronger lifters can train. There are even several sets of chains for powerlifters like me, with a Westside flair. I got a great workout, and I am on track for my powerlifting meet!

It's just 10 dollars, then I can do my workout and be on my way. Well today I go in and the woman at the front desk says, out of nowhere, "this is your last time coming here". Uh... what? "We only allow you to use a day pass 3 times a year. After that, you need a membership." Okay, first, that was a pretty rough way to bring up the topic. Second, when exactly did this become a rule? I've been coming here about once every month or so for years. She then says she can give me membership info on my way out. So I do my workout and yea, I'm thinking about this interaction. Did someone complain about me? Is there a problem and they're trying to discourage me from coming back? Well on my way out, I stop by the desk and ask for that information, hoping to also get this new rule in writing somewhere. The same woman gets an attitude with me over asking for the information she said she'd give me on the way out. I don't know what the issue is. I can't tell if it's me, or maybe she's got other stuff going on in her life and it's boiling over into our interaction. Who knows. She hands me some papers, and nowhere do I see this "day pass only 3 times a year" rule. Also, membership is nearly 100 dollars the first month and 46 dollars every month after that, which is kind of insane. You know what, I'll just do my workouts at home, and figure out some other way to do those exercises I need the machines for. Turns out you were absolutely right. That WAS my last time going there.

What's the one thing that gives everyone apprehension about attending a dinner theater?…read more The food - right? Fear not at Hot Springs Bathhouse Theater - the food here was on point. I had two teenage boys who are BIG eaters and they said the theater buffett was their best meal of our entire trip to Hot Springs. A bunch of variety from chicken wings, to turkey to beef and chicken, plenty of awesome sides and just a ton of great food to choose from. We attended on the opening night of the Christmas Spectacular show so close to a sold-out crowd and still plenty of food - even with folks of course piling their plates to the ceiling. We thought the wait staff was fun and energetic - drinks were re-filled quickly and nice generous pours of wine. The Christmas Musical Spectacular show - was Spectacular. Beautifully acted and sung, comical and entertaining at times and poignant and heartfelt at others. Great family evening in beautiful facility and great wholesome entertainment!
