The place is located in a house and it feels stylish. Warm and inviting, as well as bumping with the best music. My son wanted a wolf cut and Max gave them the best haircut and style. It looked amazing. Max explained a lot of information about the hair and treatment of the scalp. Very inviting and educational. We will be back again. read more

Brooklyn Boy is the BEST in Oneonta (we know...we've tried them all)!! Frustrated with our limited choices in the area (and with the fact that no one really knew how to give a *guy* a current haircut), we were almost ready to drive to the city, when we stumbled upon Brooklyn Boy and we were SAVED!! Short story: I had a great experience, came out feeling very excited about an awesome new cut and color, and paid LESS than I was expecting. The salon was modern, clean, and comfortable, with a laid back vibe. Max was easy to talk to and very attentive. Now, if you're from out of town or just want to read more details... Where to start? To give some perspective - I research A LOT before choosing a stylist. I want someone who stays current with cut and color techniques, who is professional, gives good customer service, listens to what I want, doesn't rush me, is understanding and patient with my pickiness, is confident in what they're doing, and has a place I can go to RELAX. I want a great all over experience. So... I just moved here and I'm VERY picky about my hair. I've had too many hack jobs on my short hair, and am not content with $12 Supercut hair dos. I don't mean to sound snobby, but again, past experiences and (yes) my personality in general has created me to be particular . I've moved around a lot and so I live off reviews to help me decide where to go and who to see. Also webpages...both of which are in short supply here in Oneonta. So, I was hesitant to go to Brooklyn Boy after reading the previous reviews. However after considering Anne O.'s review (thank you!) - seeing that BB is the only salon in the area with a professional web page (I see that as being more current), and after talking to stylists at several other popular salons, who looked at me like I had 3 heads when I asked if they had people well trained with pixie cuts (everyone has a forte), I decided to give Max a try. First off - He's not snippish; he's up front, decisive, and will give his honest opinion (like many, misunderstood NYC natives). His priority is to give each customer the best possible style and experience via good customer service. So (from what I saw) in Max's case, once he starts working on your hair, he doesn't stop. He won't answer the phone; if someone comes in off the street, he'll greet you but ask that you call or return later when he's free. Anyone sitting in the chair would appreciate that; anyone that is offended when walking in and being asked to call later, you may need a bit thicker skin. Also, as he's the only stylist there right now, I wouldn't think he can take many walk ins. **Moving on - I brought in pictures of the styles I liked. He took the time to explain the differences of each and how it would look on my hair specifically, also considering the color I wanted. After he talked me through what it was about each cut that I really liked, I was able to make a solid and confident choice in what I wanted. When I told him I wanted my highlights redone, he asked what exactly I wanted updated, since I wanted the same color and the roots hadn't grown out much. He pretty much saved me money by showing me another way he could freshen my color and just get the roots without doing the ENTIRE process...so his priority is the integrity of his work, not just making $$ off you. FINALLY (I know, I'm long winded) - he took the time to make sure I was completely satisfied with both cut and color. When I decided I did end up wanting to do all over color, AND have it done before leaving town in 2 days...and with my 4 year old son in tow (much less has frustrated other stylists), he gave me an app. for the following day by extending his salon hours and let me know it'd be fine for my son to tag along...though I (personally) wouldn't suggest that on a regular basis. Let me give you a little update and walk you through how f&*%ing great Max is. I had an appointment with him actually almost 6 months ago. I have naturally dirty blonde hair that's slowly making it's way over to just brown hair. I had been fighting this progression until a year ago. I told Max how my roots are absolutely driving me nuts and the contrast with my lightened ends is horrible. NO PROBLEM. He mixed me a color depositing/enhancing shampoo that I use on my ends to tone it down and make them more harmonious with my roots. So, six months later I am finally just noticing that I have some split ends. I have never had a hair cut keep my split ends at bay for this long. Amazing! Note-I live in NYC where there are sooo many good salons and I still choose to get my hair cut by Max when I come home to visit my parents. He's that good. read more

I've had haircuts -- good ones -- in NY, New Orleans, and Miami Beach. And some smaller places. Max outdoes them all. My grandkids were watching him cut my hair and listening to him discourse on hair -- as we left, my 10-year-old said, "He knows EVERYTHING!" And he does, he does. His skill with the snips is equivalent to his knowledge. Plus, he's funny. read more

Clearly the owner is not looking for any new business. You can attempt to schedule an appointment on their website or call them and leave a message. Either way, you won't get a call back. I contacted them when I first moved to the area in 2015...no response. I gave them the benefit of the doubt again this week...no response either by phone or email. There aren't many options to get a haircut in this area, but with their lack common courtesy towards a potential client, it's probably indicative of the service you'll get. "I finally love my hair", is what I told Max - the hair master / owner & operator of Brooklyn Boy the other day. As a past hairdresser myself, I found Max to be tops out of all the hairdressers I've ever gone to in my life for my hair care (I'm 55 y/o). Even the few I went to on fifth Avenue in New York City back in the 1980's. After moving from NYC, it was really hard to find a decent hairdresser here in upstate New York, so I just didn't have my hair done. Enter - my Max experience: December, 2011, due to word of mouth via friends, I felt I had finally found 'the hair master'. Now I say 'my hairdresser'. You want the right hair color or cut? You want to feel you look good with the locks on your head? You want to know what to do in between visits? ... go see Max at Brooklyn Boy. You'll also learn a lot too. Oh on the issue of cost, because of some of the reviews I read, one saying he "charges an arm and a leg". If that's all you care about then that's your choice. I not only want nice looking hair, but I want healthy products put onto my hair, additionally ... we all got to pay the bills and its crazy expensive out there. I also have an idea of what the mark up of hair products are, what it takes to run a business, advertise, pay utilities, taxes, insurance for business, home & self, yearly educational trade shows to keep up with trends, etc. .... Max's income after all that is said and done? Not a whole lot. In addition, when I leave Max I feel good about the way my hair feels and looks. Like I said, I finally love my hair. He's snippy is putting it mildly. He doesn't pay attention many times and misses things, which he just can't figure out why ?!? I wonder. He says he's not interested in money yet that's all he talks about. Any salon owner with class tells his clients not to tip him as he is the owner. Not him... of course. No matter how much money you pay this guy he still complains about something. He's always got some sort of issue. He's exhausting to deal with. He's so defensive that you pretty much just give up as it's just too tiring. There are many people with this opinion, its too bad they haven't expressed it here or somewhere else. He's expensive yet good with color. He's not so good cutting women's hair. Try him at your own risk. If you feel like dealing with an energy drain... go for it. read more
