I am always up for an adventure, and this one was no exception. If you like stepping back in time, then you need to come check out the Feast of the Hunters Moon, a reenactment of a mid-1700s trading post. With a reenactment comes reenactors. There are hundreds of them, dressed in traditional garb, armed with artillery, hanging out in their traditional tents, huddled around the fire. It's quite the sight to see. These reenactors lead a variety of events, from traditional dances to church ceremonies for a few denominations. Vendors also set up shop, selling everything from furry frontier hats to fine china to swords to mini telescopes. Best of all, there's BUD'S ROOT BEER (the best of the best) and FOOD: apple dumplings, fried dough, pork chops, stews/soups, sausages, breads. Most of it is pretty tasty, so bring cash and your appetite for sure! This event is definitely family-friendly and a nod to our Indiana history. Mark your calendars to experience this for sure!

The Momence Gladiolus Festival (the gladiolus are locally grown here) is a 5 day celebration that brings out the locals and neighboring towns folks and city slickers like myself to join in on the fun. There's events such as the princess and queen coronations, the flea, craft, and antique market, a classic car show, parades (kiddie parade on Friday and the main parade on Saturday), carnival and live music. It's a very family friendly event for the present and generations to come. I'm proud that it's a part of my family and in-laws tradition. The parade features local businesses and area high school marching bands decorated in, if you guessed Gladiolus, then you were right on the money. Music is upbeat and there's rarely if ever a dull moment during the main parade. The flea market is a great time to walk the park and see the interesting wares the vendors are selling. The classic car show is fun to see for all ages as well. The carnival is such a nostalgic novelty that it never ceases to remind me of my own childhood days. If it's small town family fun, then you need to load up the family and head on down to the next Momence Gladiolus Festival if you haven't already done so.

Year 2 Landmark Review: Well after another year has gone by…read moreand we are now season veterans able to find the free parking lot to park by Black Dog. We came by for lunch and it was not too crowded. After doing a quick walk through I realized that my favorite funnel cake van that raised money for veterans was not present this year. Second I could not find the Yelp tent and realized it was in the VIP section in the concert area. Anyways I returned my focus on the food. This year I felt that the prices were even higher and many of the stands were quite deceptive in pricing as in there was no price for the menu items. If anyone from the Urbana planning counsel is reading this, restaurants should be required to have a menu with prices instead of colorful pictures of food without ticket prices. I believe it was grossly over prices. 12 dollars for chicken kabob and rice. 6 dollars for a plain funnel cake. 5 dollars for a waffle cone ice cream. I didn't even try to get sweet corn as that cost 2-3 bucks an ear last year. Overall this was rather disappointing based on the high price of the food items. I maybe skipping this event next year.

There is something for everyone. Lots of great food, both fair type and that served up by local churches and organizations. There were even two places that sold ice cream made the old fashioned way. They each had fun setups that churned the ice cream. Sadly each time we went by they were making the ice cream and it wasn't ready. My husband loved seeing the large number of old tractors. On Saturday morning there is also a parade with the old tractors. There is live music and a field full of inflatables and horse rides for the kids. There is even a cornhole tournament where you can pay $10 for a team of two to compete. They also have rows of vendors selling all kinds of things. From clothes to shoes to honey and soap. I would definitely recommend you check it out. Fun way to get out with the family while supporting the local community. If you go from here to Matthews town you will find big rummage sales spread out all over town. And more fair type food being served up.

I saw the cheese curds, but did not go for them. If I knew they were Wisconsin Cheese Curds I would have. Great food and great people. Yes, there was a lot of traffic as you got closer to the fair, but I think it was worth it. It looked crowded from all the cars that were parked, but didn't actually feel that crowded. Unfortunately we did see a vender drop a fry on the counter and put it back into a customers bowl. Unsanitary and not good. Also for the venders... I noticed that their "gem" necklaces were just hollow plastic. To me that's horrible to be selling something that obviously fake. For those 2 reasons I'm deducting stars. The Strawberry Festival has been going strong since 1976, and this year was no exception. Walking through the booths of crafts, shirts, artwork, incense and candles, I was pleased to see most of the vendors were local to Montgomery County. I also was pleased to see so many artistic creations that were local, like the colored pencil drawings of the Lew Wallace Study and the Elston Home. I think festivals such as this should be about the local community, and so many bigger ones have so many out of town vendors that it loses the community vibe. This isn't the case here. The REAL reason I went was the food, which I think is secretly the real reason any of us attend in the first place. I look forward to the Strawberry Shortcake every year, and I walk around until I find the booth run by a church with the oldest women working Why? Because I know it'll be the BEST Strawberry Shortcake I'll eat all year. Was I right? Uh.. yes. It was awesome. I like that the Strawberry Festival is sectioned out into four areas: Booths, Food, Entertainment and Kids area. This helps keep the flow of traffic through the place moving, and keeps the kids (for the most part) out of the areas I want to visit. One thing worth mentioning: the larger festivals set a standard price for items, such as water and cans of soda. This isn't the case here. I saw water for 1 ticket at one booth and 2 tickets at the one right next to it. Same size and brand, but double the price. Decide what you want and shop around for the best deal.

About 10 years ago I could see the home made craft business was going down hill, so I got out of craft shows. This year and previous years we went this festival, I couldn't' believe how it has turned into a flea market show. Very few crafters. A lot of items from Mexico. The prices of the food were very expensive. $5.00 for a dish (1 scoop) of ice cream, strawberries, and a very, very small piece of cake with no favor. This place was always our favorite place to go to end the day at the festival. We wont be back. Very disappointing day.
