I am always up for an adventure, and this one was no exception. If you like stepping back in time, then you need to come check out the Feast of the Hunters Moon, a reenactment of a mid-1700s trading post. With a reenactment comes reenactors. There are hundreds of them, dressed in traditional garb, armed with artillery, hanging out in their traditional tents, huddled around the fire. It's quite the sight to see. These reenactors lead a variety of events, from traditional dances to church ceremonies for a few denominations. Vendors also set up shop, selling everything from furry frontier hats to fine china to swords to mini telescopes. Best of all, there's BUD'S ROOT BEER (the best of the best) and FOOD: apple dumplings, fried dough, pork chops, stews/soups, sausages, breads. Most of it is pretty tasty, so bring cash and your appetite for sure! This event is definitely family-friendly and a nod to our Indiana history. Mark your calendars to experience this for sure!

Unfortunately we did see a vender drop a fry on the counter and put it back into a customers bowl. Unsanitary and not good. Also for the venders... I noticed that their "gem" necklaces were just hollow plastic. To me that's horrible to be selling something that obviously fake. For those 2 reasons I'm deducting stars. I attended my first Covered Bridge Festival yesterday. I have to admit that I was a bit overwhelmed…read moreby the traffic and vendors. We attempted to drive early into the heart of the festival, Rockville. The traffic was crazy. We were able to park long enough to get a festival brochure to learn the routes to see the bridges. We also explored a couple of art vendor booths around the courthouse. We were able to see four bridges along two of the routes, though asking for help at one point. The traffic was heavy along the narrow roads. People stopping to the see the bridges were friendly. The bridges were amazing and picturesque in the beautiful weather. As we wound our way to Bridgeton, we found our selves in an immense parking lot surround by circus tents. The scene and crowd of people was uncomfortable. We were able to leave on a route that took us away from the bridges. We had intended to have a nice lunch at a local restaurant in Park County, but did not find any restaurants along the two partial routes that we travelled. We did find a nice restaurant in Putnam County that was serving lunch. I hope to return to Parke County after the festival to see the bridges and experience some of the local restaurants.

I love that they have a festival to celebrate these pieces of history. The county is made up of small towns with tight roads, and parking isn't in abundance. So when 2 million people show up, you're going to feel it. Be prepared to walk. I didn't visit any bridges or see any sites. I was just there for fair food, artisan crafts, and my sister. It's nostalgic for me. I love an Indiana fair in the fall. I cannot believe how many questionable food decisions I made today though. The grape milkshake was at the top of the questionable list. -I'm such a sucker for Amish stands. Elephant ears, persimmon pudding, fried bologna, Mexican corn, apple cider slushies, and that grape milkshake. Ugh. Have cash on hand. While many of the stands take plastic, not all do. So just have some cash. I was just thinking this was a one and done experience but my sister is making plans for us next yr too. I'll have to remember to skip the grape milkshake next time.

Southside had new vendors - Meijer, CFA. Picked up a Carmel see-thru fanny pack and a different sport ball on mini 4-ink pen. Another cute blown up if remembered an eagle. Stay safe. That might mean staying home. Bring a hat, sunscreen, fan, and lots of water. Due to the heat, it was not worth it to me. However, I am glad for the celebration. They need water mist fans like previous years.

Well, maybe I couldn't, but a baseball player sure could. To begin with, it's worth noting that the city shuts down for festival weekend. If you want to go to the hardware store...don't. Any store that IS open along 3rd street is dedicating itself to its festival booth. But that's okay - for one day a year, I'm happy to hang out at home and watch about a million (okay, probably just a couple of thousand) wander over. Parking isn't terrible as long as you're okay with walking, since you can basically park in any of the neighborhoods. If you're not able to do that, the churches sell spots on their lawn and in their parking lots. There are three main attractions to be had: 1. The entire city becomes a giant yard sale. Everyone uses that weekend as a time to help make their stuff into your stuff. So bring your cash. There are a couple of ATMs in town at the convenience stores as well. Oh, and come visit me, I have a lot of whisky decanters to rehome. Tell me that you found me on Yelp and I'll give you a discount. 2. Food. This is where the festival doesn't do as well. There are a lot of food options, but the lines are incredibly long. They either need more food vendors, or the existing food vendors need to be more efficient. We want to give you our money, but you have to meet us halfway! 3. STUFF. Lots of vendors selling various things. There are always some people selling wooden creations, plants here and there, food products, etc. If you go to Mosey Down Main or other street festivals in the greater Tippecanoe area, you'll probably see similar things. There are other attractions, like the pony ride, music, a beer garden, etc., but that changes from year-to-year. I think it's a delightful little festival, and that everyone should come.

People waited in line for wrist bands only to find out they needed to go to the podium first to get a ticket. This is the 13th year for this event I would think things like this would be worked out. I found a parking spot about a half a block away so that worked out well. I had a nice time. I talked to a lot of nice folks. I ate some good food. I really enjoyed my potato pancakes with sour cream. I do not drink beer but they also had wine and regular cocktails. They had German music and everyone really enjoyed it. They had weiner dog races but it was very crowded around the track and I did not get to see them but I did see plenty walking around the event. They had several vendors and I purchased a hat for my grandchild. I had fun and also enjoyed a meal at The Rathskeller.

Art in…read moreBloom, The Lume immersive experiences , Winterlights and of course Harvest Nights are some of the annual events I look forward to. Last night was the third time I attended Harvest Nights. This was the first time I arrived before it was dark so it was less spooky and a bit more wholesome in the daylight. We arrived at 7 and stayed until about 9 pm to experience everything lit up after dark. When you arrive, you're surrounded by stacks of pumpkins in every size, shape, color and type imaginable. Beautiful Fall arrangements are everywhere you look. The Fungi Forest was something new I haven't seen before. Very cool! I felt a bit like Alice in Wonderland encompassed by giant mushrooms towering above illuminated by strategically placed neon lights. One of the highlights of the event was the Cutwater Lounge--a 21+ space upstairs in the Lily House transformed into "Mischief Manor" only for Harvest Nights. The bartender told me this was the first year having this feature. We had a flight of the Cutwater alcoholic beverages that included a snack mix of tasty treats. The Mule and Espresso Martini were our favs with the margarita coming in 3rd. Cutwater's take on the Lemon Drop (which is a drink I typically enjoy) was strong yet tasted a bit watered down. The adult only experience wasn't very well marked (it's upstairs) and signage in general--starting at the parking lot entrance--needs improvement. I'm not sure we would have known about the adult area had it not been for the nice lady who sold us some yummy sweet potato fries with sage and bourbon maple dip. The Spider Stomp, Ghost Train and light show projected onto the Lily House all add to the overall experience. The seasonal food and drink options are great albeit a bit pricey. Passed on the $12 Bavarian pretzel but had to try Elysian Pumpkin Ale and wanted to try the cider but $14 was a little steep. It's not necessary to spend $20 for premium parking that they pressure you to purchase when you first pull into the lot. I recommend getting there early and wearing some of your best walking shoes. It's a cashless campus so good to keep that in mind. Love Newfields and can't wait for Winterlights in a couple months!

There were tons of decorated pumpkins throughout Newfields. There is a food/drink garden area in the middle with benches to take a break if you want. We ordered the Marsh & Mallow Spooky Campfire Cocoa (spiked hot cocoa) and we all liked it and was comforting on this chilly night. The Lily house had a long line but we enjoyed going in and seeing all the spooky details inside.
