The volunteers (the artists themselves) are always friendly and helpful should you need assistance. In the summer it is cool inside and always sparkling clean. Yesterday I bought notecards of painted woodpeckers and felted acorns to use as a photo prop. Note that there is a ramp up to the door facing the street but not the door facing the alley.

So, some take their works all the way to the ceiling! From what I can tell, the artists take turns inside the shop being the sales person/adviser about the works on display. Most of what caught my eye were paintings. Different styles were on display, but I'm kind of a plein air fan and so I definitely had my favorites. The art was reasonably priced/affordable for many homes. My only wish is that the space was a little larger so that each piece could be displayed with its own space, not quite so closely arranged. Note: I believe this is one of the shops that is up for auction at the end of Oct'19, so it is hard to know how that will affect this business. I hope the new owners treat these businesses fairly. One of the best things about this little Nashville art gallery (other than being surprised to see such beautiful things in it) is that it's free to visit! Yes, you can just walk right in and start exploring. If you wanted to talk to someone, there's a booth with people in it who will, I'm sure, tell you informative things about the gallery. I wouldn't know! I don't like to talk to people at art galleries. I'd rather just experience the art myself, quietly, and form my own opinions. What I do know about this art gallery is that it's almost 100 years old, as of this writing. Nashville, Indiana, is a hub for art, and I would consider the Brown County Art Gallery to be the heart of the area's art scene. You'll find work from local Indiana artists here, as well as artists from around the Midwest and beyond. The art ranges in styles from impressionist to photo-realism and everything in between. You can purchase original artwork, or if you're feeling less spendy, you can purchase more budget-friendly prints or postcards. There's something for every art collector here.

We were immediately welcomed by friendly staff when we arrived and encouraged to visit the juried show. The gallery has been running by the Brown County Art Gallery Artist Association since 1926, making it one of the oldest galleries in the U.S. The gallery has moved around a bit since 1926, with the current location on land donated by noted artist, Adolph Shulz. The art is high quality by well-known and budding Indiana artists. Much of the art is museum quality. This is a place to buy real art for your home. Prices start at a couple hundred dollars and go up into the thousands. There were two galleries featuring art and stories about famous artists with Indiana connections. Currently, artists Nancy Noell and Gustave Baumann are featured. Some of the woodblocks carved by Baumann are on display. There is another large gallery with paintings for sale by local artists and members of the Association. A wonderful classroom/studio has been added to the facility. During the summer, kids can sign up for lessons. (But classes are full for 2024). There is a small gift shop with cards, books about the artist of Brown County and more. Visiting the gallery is free but they do take donations. They have ample parking in their private lot. The building is ADA accessible. I love it and will return.

Everything they sell is from Brown County artists, I thought this was very cool! In the front they had a selection of jewelry and in the back was more artwork/photography with other items scattered around as well. Prices do vary pretty drastically, definitely some pieces I loved but could not afford! But it is still a lovely gallery just to look at, the staff did not seem to mind window shoppers at all. There was even a women working on some fabric art that was super nice to my niece when she asked a bunch of questions. One of my favorite collections was the metal jewelry, tiny pieces sculpted into amazing necklaces, earrings, etc. but sadly those were currently not in my budget. I did purchase some gorgeous blue earrings and my sister in law purchased a bracelet from the same artist. The guy who rang us up said he has told that artist to charge more...well, I guess, but by not doing so, she also got 2 of her pieces sold that day! So who knows how often prices fluctuate.

As you enter, there is a staircase that leads up (I'm not sure that area is open to the public). A couple of staff were having a conversation as I strolled through the house. I noticed miniature houses/rooms recreated by the owner who spent time as a curator of furnishings for a New York museum. I also found puzzles and pencils and a diverse group of items that may work as a gift or as a conversation piece in your home. The name of this art gallery is right on the nose. It's named Second Story Studio because ... well,…read moreit's located on the second story of a building. More specifically, the second story of the historic Village Green Building, which happens to be painted green. This is the kind of space where you'll want to spend some time just walking around and absorbing the art. It's an art gallery, but it feels like a home. There are a couple different rooms, with art hung on the walls and placed on vintage tables and furniture. The hardwood floors creak satisfactorily when you step on them. There's a room with couches. It's a cozy space with lots of art everywhere. The art on display is from artists both local to Nashville and from elsewhere. Pretty much all of the art that I saw was for sale. Some of it was too rich for my blood, but there were prints and postcards and other things that were much more affordable for a broke philistine like myself. Second Story Studio also offers art classes and workshops, as well as a shared studio space for artists. This is a cool little place in downtown Nashville, a city that's a hub for the arts in Indiana.
