It…read moremay not be as modern as a library would be if it was built today, but it has done a good job of adapting to the technological advances that libraries have seen in the 27 years since it opened. It certainly has come a long way from the first public library that I remember, which opened in 1956 in the basement of The Columns when that building was located at Park and Adams (where the Doubletree Hotel is now located). Now The Columns sits on a corner of the property where this library was built and the library sits on the former site of an earlier version of Leon High School. They have a good selection of all the usual library offerings of books, periodicals, CDs, DVD's and even digital downloads of current books. I even saw a poster recently at our branch library that indicated you can now download graphic novels/comics. Our Tallahassee Genealogical Society maintains a genealogy research section at this library as well. I personally enjoy being able to search the library catalog online so I can place a hold on a book I want to check out and have it delivered to my branch library or being able to renew checkouts when I take more than the 3 weeks checkout period to finish a book.

We didn't have any "hanging chads" here in 2000. Tuesday we had another successful election even with a strong thunderstorm that knocked out power for a little bit and blew over the tent covering the curbside drop off for absentee/mail-in ballots. Heck, one precinct even had to briefly deal with a naked man in front of the precinct. I know y'all all saw that "Florida man" story. 67% of us voting by mail and early voting probably helped Tuesday be mostly uneventful. Supervisor of Elections is normally a job for as long as you want it as long as you don't mess up. Wilma Sullivan was Supervisor for forever when I was younger. Her son worked for years with her and probably would have been the next Supervisor because of his experience but evidently they didn't trust the electorate to pick the most experienced candidate so on the last day of qualifying Wilma announced her retirement and her son became the only candidate to qualify before the deadline. That caused quite an uproar so a write in candidate won the job. He didn't avoid messing up so Ion Sancho got the job and kept things smooth for many years right past the 2000 Florida election debacle. He did such a good job that he became something of an election expert on the national level. Mark Earley, the most experienced employee in Ion's office, won the election after Ion's retirement and has kept things running smooth since. I suspect he will be in the job as long as he wants it.

Appointments definitely recommended, walkins have to wait or be sent to another office due to how busy. I really like the appt aspect. The employees that helped me were kind and very helpful and I appreciated that. I had Appointments both visits and they seem to run fairly on time which I found awesome. (One appt was 15 minutes past appt, but I watched and there were many customers doing what seemed complicated things , and I think my wait time was nominal. Thanks leon county for being helpful and kind to an older woman. And thank you for having the forms online so they can be filled out prior to my visit.

A little known resource for most Tallahasseans that has fallen on hard times since Wall Street…read morenearly put us all in bread lines back in 2008. The State Archives used to have it's own comfortable, attractive and reasonably equipped space on the first floor. Severe budget cuts and other state agency demands on space forced the State Library and State Archives to move into one space together. Neither has what they had before as a result. Subsequent state budgets have not been kind either. Their current space is cramped and totally lacking in any decor. Then again, many libraries have never been about style or appearance. What is important is the substance of their collection and that they have. There are several computers available and they have a few modern computer microfilm readers as well as an old school microfilm reader. There are several tables with chairs to use while doing research. They have the state's major daily newspapers to read. There is a display of new books to browse and some shelves of books. Most of their collection is in "the stacks" and have to be retrieved for you. You do not have to be a state employee to get a library card and check out books. However, don't think this will solve your dilemma of getting your hands on the latest bestseller that has a long waiting list at the Leon County Library. The State Library mission is to serve as a resource for state government so their collection is heavy on non-fiction, particularly anything related to Florida. They do have fiction, just don't expect it to be brimming with multiple copies of the latest bestsellers. The State Archive part of the collection is a genealogist researchers dream. Their computers give you access to Ancestry, Newspaper Archive, Fold3 and other resources by virtue of their subscription to those websites. They have a huge collection of research resources for all states with a heavier emphasis on Florida. Both the library and arrive collections can be searched online so you can come prepared by doing some looking from the comfort of your home. You cannot take bags into the library, but they provide lockers for storing your stuff while you are in the library. No pens allowed so bring pencils or use theirs. Visitor parking is available adjacent to the R. A. Gray Building and you can save the $5 parking fee by asking for a token at the library desk where you check in. There is breakfast and lunch available at The Egg Express on the ground floor if you get hungry. The Museum of Florida History is also located on the ground floor if you want to make a full Florida experience of it.

What an honor... to be able to visit where important cases are decided. I came here on a field…read moretrip and was so impressed coming into this historic building. At the time there were two death penalty cases that were being reviewed and honestly wish that I would have gotten the opportunity to participate. However, I was on a tour... I did get to see the chief justice seats and admire all the historic art work. I am happy the kids were able to see this and understand the importance of the supreme court. The tour guides were excellent and even gave a PowerPoint presentation for the kids along with questions the kids could respond to. All in all, great experience and recommend when visiting our state capital!

Beautiful building in the heart of downtown Tallahassee across Duval Street from the State Capitol…read morebuilding. Main floor, including Court library and courtroom, is open to the public. Oral arguments, which are held once per month, are also open to the public. Great place to visit and learn about history of State of Florida. The public entrance is on Duval Street, and the best place to park is in the Kleman garage downtown, which you can enter on Duval or Bronough Street.

The oak tree was magnificient, all 500 years of it. The cottage was shrouded with trees. We got savaged by mosquitos so do spray before you get there. There is a small car park and information board which you can just see from the road....just!
