The staff here are extremely friendly and accommodating to volunteers' schedules. When we don't have folks to visit with, we hang out in the office with the staff. Their work in the 1970s to assist gay, lesbian, and bisexual service members in their fight to serve openly featured prominently in my dissertation. The cemetery itself is so wonderfully inclusive and diverse. And the association that maintains the property keeps bees! Along the roofs of the family vaults are a series of hives. And there is a small plot for pets, too! I was just amazed. It being spooky season, I saw that there are also some spoopy evening tours to get your spook on.

That was a much bigger experience than this which would often bring back classic movies, with guest appearances by the actors in it and actual walk through scenes with live actors and theme cocktail bars, etc. Okay, so this is much more low key! But we appreciate the effort. We went to see Jurassic Park. We got a seat among the tombstones and the screen kept getting blown up, only to deflate about 5 times! They eventually got it up. And after they had a few issues with playing the movie, they got it started. I liked the determination. They offer free popcorn and have a very small drink selection like canned wine wine, soda, and water. Our family had a lot of fun. We'd likely check it out again. I love the history of this place and would be interested in coming back to try the LGBT walk tour as it's the only cemetery in the world with an gay burial section.

There were vendors, free giveaways, DJs, food, young adults, seniors, people in wheel chairs, people of every age, race, color, creed were there. What stood out to me were the Drag Queens completely decked out, approachable and available for photo-ops. The weather was hot. It's a good idea to come with an Iced water bottle to stay hydrated. The event was well organized. There were scheduled events all over the city. The website described what was going on from free to ticketed events.

Granted, most…read moretimes I am here to work at a booth for my place of work, but every so often I get to be out and explore. (Apologies for such a late post for this review, I'm just that backed up on reviews). Like I said, when I am usually here, it is t be working a booth during the festival day...or, come to think of it, marching in the parade. Being on the side of things where you are participating in the events and having to deal with the organization is a a bit eye opening. Participating usually starts rather early and towards the last three months of the year prior. It moves rather quickly and you have to have all your ducks in a row. However, if you do, it goes rather smoothly. Especially if you already have an account and know what you are doing. Steps progress rather quickly and you will be uploading documents, attending mandatory meetings, and be upon your way to the day. The only downside here is that they seem to make the meeting (that could be an email) for participants mandatory. It's not easy to work that into your schedule, last minute I might add, when you are travelling for work. Come the day of the events and they run rather smoothly. The festival day is packed full of people and it is crazy how everything goes off without a hitch. Music is everywhere, people are having a good time, and the smells are wonderful. All the vendors offering food make it feel like you are at a state fair. Hopefully one of these years I'll have time to explore more and just be here on my own time. Wish it would be next year as DC will be hosting World Pride.

A real Victorian beauty, Prospect Hill was established in 1858 by the German Evangelical Church…read moreSociety of the United Evangelical Concordia Church. Hence, the headstones read like the Hoffbrau Haus waiting list, and many are intricately carved with gorgeous floral motifs that were popular in the mid to late 1800's. I first came for a late-in-the-day visit a week ago. The sun was setting and I knew I wouldn't have enough time to get a good view and time for pictures, so I settled on driving through. On that day, there was a good deal of vandalism in one sector...a large angel knocked off her pedestal and a broken headstone. My hat is off to the caretaker(s), everything was repaired a week later. The cemetery is set up as a walkable loop with a pretty garden in the middle. It's also alive with all sorts of ivy, wildflowers, huge trees (one of which had just turned a brilliant orange), and snakes. Yep...you read that right. The little buggers, all garters from what I could tell, were everywhere. I decided my habit of sitting or lying on the ground to get a good angle for a shot could wait. Though Prospect Hill shares a fence with Glenwood and is situated across the road from St. Mary's, it has a very distinct and exclusive feel. It seems to be much more a part of nature and carries a more European flavor. Small and elegant, it's well worth a visit, especially on a dreary fall day. Unlike Glenwood, which is heavy with angel imagery, Prospect Hill offers uniquely carved headstones that reflect the natural world. That's probably what makes it seem very in tune with the life around it. This is another cemetery where off street parking is a must if you plan to do a walk. The grounds aren't very large, but parking in the lane doesn't leave much room for another vehicle to pass. Please make sure you heed the sign that says "Gate Closes at 4:00". They're not kidding about that. I drove in yesterday to tour and lost my keys while tromping around and taking pictures. After 20 minutes and a LOT of panicking, I found them. I also found that the gates, though my bigass red truck was visible, had been closed. This was the scariest part of my visit, because i really didn't want to approach the imposing caretaker's home and bang on the door (that just smacked of the beginning of a good horror movie). Luckily, those old iron gates hadn't been locked yet, so I could reopen them to get out and close them after.
