Last year this place was tolerable for a long layover because after they finally got the wi-fi working, I found that I could sit at Starbucks all the time and try to get something done and take care of business, that being of getting moved onward from here. This time, not so much. The Starbucks in Departures Landside is starting to throw me out of their area for not buying anything and it's not even THEIR wi-fi it's the Airport's. Airport customer service is being morons about it, I'm having to resort to reporting them to Starbucks Corporate for violating Corporate policy yet again. What is it with European countries' Starbucks doing that to me constantly, just because I'm black and with a computer and not able to afford to buy anything because they won't take my Starbucks Card because it's not their country's account because I don't LIVE HERE??? Now theoretically I could try to buy a local Bpost Visa gift card down in Arrivals at the post office inside Louis DelHaize and buy a Belgium Starbucks Rewards Card and pay for something that way without having to be "cash only" everywhere I go, but at the moment the Arrivals hall is off-limits to anyone who arrived at this Airport via the TRAIN station in the basement and not on a plane. They're being assholes about that at the door of Arrivals. If you try to get IN to, say, do things like that or even enquire about hiring a car at the car-hire desks they want to see your boarding pass. That's beyond unreasonable it's just stupid, Belgium. Do try to remember that Zaventem Airport is also a Train and Bus station.
At the moment the Train station wi-fi is working, too, they've fixed that lately (at Gare Midi the wi-fi sucks even though it's the same SSID as the Airport train station) but there's usually nowhere to wait for a train down there as there's no seating. At the moment, though, since the Airport has locked-off the waiting room because they're just not using ticket counters 11-14 and apparently they don't want people waiting around sitting on a chair like a normal human being, only on the floor with the laptop on our laps behind our luggage piled onto the luggage trolley (which, at least, are still free) there is actually MORE seating down in the Train station level of this Airport than up here in Departures at the Airport level.
What it is, is that BRU National, Zaventem Airport is an Airport AND a Train Station AND a Gare Routière. I wouldn't recommend waiting for anything for any length of time at the Gare Routière level since you'll be outside in the rain (usually) or the heat. Getting rained on or baked, or both.
The good: the wi-fi works, it's unlimited, some of the shoppes are still open although this being the Airport they're the ones with "skyway robbery" for prices. This place is still "cancellation capital of Eurabia" and yet the way they've changed the setup due to "Corona" they really don't want you here any length of time even if they're screwing with you on your whatever means you're using to get out of the country. I strongly encourage the TRAINS, this is Europe, after all. If you need to Brexit, take a TRAIN to Gare Midi and get on the Eurostar!!! If you need to Frexit, take a TRAIN or there's the €4,99 Ouibus down at the Gare Routière level a couple of times a day at least until they start shutting that down again talking "reconfinement."
Let's see, what else: the WCs are still clean and decent even though they're not getting anally cleaned every 15 minutes like they wound up doing last August. This time last year it felt like they had more WC-cleaning staff than flight attendants around here. Even the airline crew was starting to be inconvenienced.
I've noticed that the Corona announcements about washing your hands and keeping the mask on, in all 4 languages, has replaced the previous "do not leave your luggage unattended at any time" announcements from before. Not that you can leave your luggage unattended these days either; it's just, being Belgium, making all those announcements in all 4 languages every 15 minutes would really be a "mouthful," now wouldn't it.
At least they don't kick people out in the middle of the night anymore; it's still open 24/7. With most things closed with signs up reading "still under lock-down" event self-check-in kiosks, most food items still available are predominantly chocolate, if you're allergic to chocolate, beware.
Moral of this story: don't come to Continental Europe if you're Black (and French and Irish...) and need to rely on free public wi-fi to get a job or contact people (my phone only works on wi-fi) once you arrive, sort of thing. Don't get me wrong, Belgium is loads better than Germany was, but it's still got a long way to go. At least they don't have Airport NAZIs harassing me about even BEING here, sitting over here in the corner completely out of the WAY, just because I'm Black like Berlin TXL did. Ça fait du bien, quitter l'Allemagne!! read more
