Five different, local Ophthamologists had various diagnoses for worsening symptoms. The symptoms began with cloudy vision and progressed to the point that the discharge, discomfort and inability to keep my eyes open severely impacted my quality of life. I was unable to drive, lost depth perception, and balance issues became part of a constant challenge. When a local (Gulf Coast of Mississippi) Optometrist referred me to Ophthamologist #6. he performed many in depth tests and was confident the problem was mechanical. He told us the best he knew was in Shreveport, LA. We were able to get an appointment with Dr. Vekovius in a reasonable amount of time. For the past 3 years I have been having intermittent vision problems, pain, burning, pressure, blurring, watery and blackness. Headaches that weren't typical migraines. My previous eye doctors never could find the cause or a solution and seemed down right dismissive. In December I decided to try a new ophthalmologist who not only listened but did additional testing. She was very concerned and got me an appointment with Dr Vekovius right away. His office staff were very kind, his assistants explained the purpose of each test, cleaned the equipment in front of me, and let me know what was next. This all took some time and honestly, my anxiety was creeping in so the kindness and reassurance they provided was greatly appreciated. When Dr Vekovius came in to see me, he explained that he believed the issue stemmed from my HEART. He showed me the pictures of my inner eye and in great detail explained how my heart or the carotid arteries could be restricting the oxygen getting to my optical nerve. He sent me in for some blood work and an MRI AND got me in with a cardiovascular specialist. The worst experience I have ever had with any type of medical provider. From the office staff to Dr. Vekovius. I would not let this man touch my dog. Arrogant. Rude. Obnoxious. Maybe it is just because I am a Texas. I took my sister with me to the visit, whom is a Nurse Practitioner, and she was outraged at this man's behavior. Dr Vekovius is a wonderful caring doctor that goes way beyond what other doctors are willing to do. My husband had double vision in mid November 2023. During our visit, he noticed the muscle fasciculations that had spread throughout most of his body. I had requested for our primary doctor to look into it. She checked his electrolytes, potassium, and magnesium. When nothing showed up she blew us off. I couldn't get anyone to help. But that day in his office, he made it his mission to help us get to the bottom of what was going on. He ordered an MRI, had labs drawn, and set up a doctors appointment with a specialists. I can't say it enough, he was a God send. Even taking a video and sending it to a top neurologist, whom I had been told wasn't accepting new patients. The neurologist not only took my husband as a patient but also put him on the cancelation list. If it wasn't for Dr Vekovius I don't where we would be. The wait to see Dr Vekovius was over 3 hours. Literally every patient had to do every 'test' in his office at every appointment, whether or not it was needed. (many of these tests I have administered only once a year at my regular eye Dr) I asked the staff if this was normal, was told yes, to count on at least 3 hours for every visit. I had gone to see him about laser sealing my tear ducts. He told me he wouldn't discuss that with me at this appointment, I had to come back for another appointment. What???? Worst Dr. Ever!!! Arrogant, rude, dismissive, disrespectful and condescending. He walked in and didn't introduce himself. He proceeded to do the exam in which he was rough and then just laughed it off. He tried walking out of the room while I was talking and didn't address the concerns I came in for. He asked if I had taken Gabapetin and gave me some samples of dry eye solution. His office is filled with dirt and dust in the exam rooms. His assistants wear gloves but touch all the surfaces, their hair, their face, the doorknobs and then come over and try to touch your eye. Worst experience! Will NEVER go back!! read more

Dr. Vekovius cares about his patients. He is very easy to talk to, and the atmosphere in his office makes you feel at home. He is very professional and knowledgeable his profession. I have been a patient of Dr. Vekovoius ever since he started his practice. My first vis to him was on a Christmas Eve late evening. I had gotten injected with too much Botox from another neurologist. I was referred to Dr. Vekovius. Dr. Vekovoius had to do emergency surgery on my left eye. My insurance would not approve it, because of the timing. Dr. Vekovius said, I don't care about getting paid, this lady need help. He did the surgery and had to sew my eye up, because I couldn't close it because of the overdose of Botox. Excellent Dr. sometimes his bedside manner is different and he can seam abrupt, but I've been seeing him over 20 years, as I was referred due to a loss of vision in my left eye. My regular eye doctor sent me for an mri and to Dr V. I was in my 40's. Dr V did all the basic tests and had to request my mri. He read it and looked at the results. He could not find anything but followed me for a very long time. He followed me for years and I thought it was a waste of time. Within 2-3 years I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. My Neurologist referred me back to Dr V and when he saw me and I told him I had been diagnosed with MS, he literally jumped up and down. I asked why he was happy and he said he was not happy I had MS, but was happy he was right. He said that he thought I had it years ago but had no symptoms other than the vision loss. I still have issues with the vision in that eye but he still keeps track of my vision. I know I have vision in that eye because of him. He is a truly amazing doctor!! We did not have the same goals for the visit....he wanted to get me back for another visit and I wanted a diagnosis/resolution to the problem. He was a little arrogant but I would go back to him again since I have Macular Degeneration in my left eye, the medicine he recommended has worked to keep it from getting worse. I will need to go back soon to get cataracts removed from both eyes. He did want me to come twice a year but I don't have the copay or a way to go. Most people who have Myasthenia Gravis will tell you horror stories about having to wait years to find a doctor who was able to diagnose the condition and even longer for the treatment plan to work. Dr. Vekovius diagnosed my condition on the first visit. Three weeks later, most of my symptoms were gone. The man knows his job and does it well. Wait times vary wildly. I've had three visits, the first took about an hour to get in but it's because he worked me in at the last minute on a referral. One was a five-minute wait and one was about 45 minutes. Visits are quick. He's an eye doctor, not a therapist, so he doesn't spend a lot of time talking about your feelings. He's very sure of himself but he's also willing to listen. Dr. Vekovius saved my fathers life! After going to see several doctors for my father's failing health, he was admitted to the hospital. He was told his body was just shutting down and was going to have to have a feeding tube placed and would probably only have 3 days to 3 months to live. Dr. Vekovious at first seemed truly concerned about my son. When he was 11 he started to have major headaches, so I thought maybe he needed glasses. Took him to our regular ophthalmologist and that is where we learned something was putting pressure on his optic nerves. We were referred to Dr. Vekovious and also saw a pediatric neurologist in Dallas. My son was diagnosed with Idiopathic Psuedo Tumor Cerebri. Thankfully it means false tumor and he was treated with medication and eventually out grew the condition. I noticed the more we went to see Dr. V he was always rushed, never would look or speak to me and I think he was milking the insurance. My son had been taken off meds and was doing great. He graduated this year and has been working to join the military. We had to get Dr. V to release him from his care. He was not happy, and was so extremely rude and annoyed. I'm glad he helped when we needed his help, but he is just one of those doctors that want to cram as many patients in as possible to fill his wallet. 7 years ago I would have recommended Dr. V, but today I say find someone else that seems to care for his patients. read more

If you have something going on with your vision that other doctors aren't figuring out, this is the guy you want on your team. I probably owe my life to Dr. Vekovius and I definitely would have spent another 5 to 10 years before I got a diagnosis if it wasn't for him. I went through a roller coaster of doctors before landing with Dr. Vekovius, each doctor came up with an idea, ran some test, then shrugged their shoulders when their idea didn't pan out. Dr. Vekovius doesn't know the word defeat and has no problem completely changing directions if the test results point to something different. He threw out a wide net looking for the cause of my vision loss and neurological issues and within 2 months and 3 or 4 visits I'm now steps away from a diagnosis of MS (after 100's of visits with other specialist). Another thing I love about Dr. Vekovius is that he is not afraid to say something is out of his specialty. He found abnormal clotting results and a congenital heart defect that could have caused a stroke and he sent me straight out to the top cardiologist and hematologist to investigate. Would not recommend this dr at all! My husband was referred here from texarkana being blind in his left eye at 27 y/o dr.v did 1 mri and 1 round of blood work in 3 weeks and said there was no point in doing more tests he was just blind. When i asked what we were going to do next to find out why a healthy young man went blind he said steroids when i asked what they would do he said i was being hostile and making him feel incompetent, and told his nurse not to do anything else with my husband just get us out of there, our voices weren't raised at all and we apologized for making him feel that way and he stormed out of the room very unprofessional,i got him to Dr.McHenry in dallas the next day and he quickly found tumors on both optic nerves and said he would go completely blind if left untreated. So if "Dr." Vekovius keeps treating patients with his ego instead of his medical education he will cause them to loose their sight or worse. read more
