After awhile knowing to check screens and updated paper timetables it was helpful. You may have a train somewhere, but the screen may have a different destination for your location. That can be confusing. This train station offers many amenities and options for dining before or after your arrival. Bathrooms you do have to pay for. That is always a treat with kids. Overall, a good train station option that just needs a little time if you are new to figure it out.

There are many food and dining options, various retail stores, everything imaginable. It's fairly easy to navigate. Free Wi-Fi available. If you're from the United States and you're catching an Uber, be prepared to move fast to get your Uber. Don't order an Uber assuming there will be a typical delay of two or three minutes like in the United States. We had to pay our Uber driver a small waiting fee because of the time it took us to get from the door of the train station to the Uber.

Berlin Hauptbahnhof or Berlin Central Station is a vast Train Station. But, more than simply a…read moretrain station, it is a Shopping Mall, as well. Meaning, there are a lot of businesses that line the walls of this station. This is a multi-level train station. They have escalators and elevators to take you to the various levels. So, getting around is not too difficult. As this is the main station of Berlin, as can be expected, you may encounter a lot of people here. The moment you begin to walk towards the station you can expect to encounter a lot of people puling their suitcases and carrying their bags. Plus, a lot of people running late, jamming their way through the crowds. My suggestion is to plan to get there a little early if you have a train to catch. As mentioned, there is also a lot of businesses that line the walls of this station. These are mostly food stands and convenience markets, but there is a few other places where you can grab some clothing and stuff the like. More than just a train station, Berlin Hauptbahnhof is a gathering spot. They have a music venue and a outdoor food stand area on the back side of this station, over by the river. So, this is not only a place to grab that train, to get whereever it is you are going to, but a place to sit back and enjoy the Berlin Outdoor life, as well.

The area surrounding the station features the Berlin Fernsehturm, Weltseituhr, Rotes Rathaus, Nikolaikirche, and other historic and tourist sites. It's also within walking distance 20-25 minutes from Museum Island. There's shopping and public parks in the neighborhood too. This area was also where in the evening there were quite a fair number of unfortunate homeless peoples in the streets. Didn't feel like they were bothering anyone though just a note for those walking around later at night.

One of the most impressive things about German cities and Berlin is no exception to this, is the…read moreefficient and plentiful provision of public transport options Berlin is criss-crossed by well signposted and organised Deutsche Bahn railway trains, U-Bahn subway trains, S-Bahn psuedo-subway trains, trams and buses. These run reliably, are clean and run on an integrated ticketing zonal fare system. You can buy tickets for journeys within or across the fare zones (A to C), either for single journeys or as a daily travel cards and these cover all modes of transport. Just remember to validate your tickets for travel at the little validation machines on the platform The next most impressive thing about German public transport is the honesty of the travelling public. I was surprised and then shocked to find that you can just stroll onto the train platforms with passing any ticket barriersand watching travellers, people do pay for tickets. Perhaps to London's shame, I'm fairly sure that if there were no ticket barriers, a significant number of passengers would abuse the system. Some already try to do so despite the presence of ticket barriers Ostkreuz is a major interchange for a lot of S-Bahn services located in the eastern end of town. It provides another way to get to Berlin Schoenefeld Airport via the S9 line. You just need to locate the correct platform from which your service is departing and the departure boards are quite clear There are a few eateries but no toilet (I had to hold it a little til I got to the airport!). There are customer service agents with red hats to help customers but they weren't particularly helpful with regard to toilet facilities! Despite this, the station was a model of German efficiency - who needs the private sector to suck out last amounts of taxpayers' subsidy if the public sector can run such an efficient transport system?

Folks unfamiliar with the German transport system probably fall in love with it instantly. Trains…read morerun on time, busses are considerably clean, trams are modern, and subways are a vital part of every big city. This is especially true for Berlin. Public transport gets you anywhere. At Bahnhof Ostkreuz ("East cross") all the city trains (S-Bahn) come together. It is one of four major stations (Suedkreuz, Gesundbrunnen, Hauptbahnhof) and it has been re-constructed for years. It now has a full-size roof which protects you from wind and rain, some food options, and large escalators that connect the North/South-bound and the East/West-bound platforms. I remember the good old days in the 1980's when Ostkreuz was one of the bigger transit hubs in East Berlin, with the best currywurst outside the station. Now I believe there's a Doner Kebab place, among plenty of food and drink options in the neighborhood.

Brandenburger Tor is one of the nicer metro stations I visited on my trip to Berlin, as you can…read moretell with the name it serves the Brandenburger Tor which is basically the Brandenburg Gate which is one of the main and key attractions in Berlin. It is located on the U55 line which is quite useful for connections into Bundestag and Berlin Central Station, the overall journey across the line from Brandenburger Tor to the Hauptbanhof (Central Station) is 8 minutes and as I recall, this is the only line this station is on, meaning most likely you're going to have to visit another train station to change, being one of those two, to get the metro into Brandenburger Tor, perhaps because of this, it might just be easier to get the bus as I found to be easier when traveling from my Hotel. I called at this station by chance, hoping to get into Central Station so I used the U55 line to go the full length of the train route which is 8 minutes. There did appear to be one end of the station cornered off, which probably was the place you would get off the train for the U55 here at Brandenburger Tor, so they appeared to be turning and using the other plaform for some reason. This metro station did also seem bright and modern, it didn't seem old, dark and smelly like some trains on the network and also had lift access, warranting a solid three star rating which is supported by the location being meters away from the Brandenburg Gate. 3 star rating due to reasons discussed above, sadly I don't feel it is worth any higher as the station remains understaffed and of course it is only on the U55 line.

I remember the train slowing down through a brightly lit and empty station, except for an East German guard or two.. I still vividly remember the green tiles line the walls of the Unter den Linden (not Brandenburger Tor) station. I had the opportunity to return to the Brandenburger Tor station last year. I was walking down the Unter den Linden and heading towards the Brandenburg gate, where this time I could freely walk through unlike the Berlin Wall days. The station came into view in front of me and I immediately knew that I had been here before (albeit in passing underground). I walked downstairs, walked through the corridors and touched those green tiles. That's quite a reminder of what was and how walls could happen again.
