Seriously...I wish I read the reviews before booking with Thrifty/Dollar which is run by Rent Terstappen. I landed xmas morning and went to the rental counter of Thrifty/Dollar which was being operated by Rent Terstappen, the line was fairly decent so I waited for about an hour. Upon being helped I was asked whether I would like no deductible insurance for 23 euros a day or 16 Euro insurance with a 600 deductible. The following conversation took place : Me : "No thank you, I don't need insurance as my AMEX covers me in Europe" Teller : "We do not accept AMEX Insurance, only VISA/MC" Me : "Ok fine, here is my HSBC MC" (It is an HSBC Premier card) Teller : "We only accept the insurance if there is a written letter stating that the person is insured in Europe, it's stated in the fine print of the contract" Me : "So let me get this, you don't accept insurance from AMEX, the biggest credit card company in the world, but you still take their card? And you will accept insurance from VISA or MC, but only if there is a written letter stating the person is insured?" Teller : "Correct" Me : "Is this like your little trick to get more money off people?" Teller : "It's not a trick sir, if you read the fine print it is in there." Me : "Miss, the fine print IS a trick. If you tell someone what their cost would be, then in the fine print say it will be additional, that is a trick." Teller : "Sir, you are more than welcome to go somewhere else" (knowing that I was not sure of the rates nor availability of the other locations, plus I've already waited an hour,). Me : "Fine." Teller : "It is also German law that anything under 7 degrees Celsius be required to have a Snow Tyre fee of 13 Euros per day" Me : "Let me guess, in the fine print?" Teller : "Yes sir" Me : "Fantastic" I was then charged a 600 Euro amount instead of actually a hold being placed for a security deposit, which screwed with my exchange rate. The insurance thing is complete bullshit. And the Tyre thing I have no idea if it is a law or not, but I was NEVER given snow tyres. I had standard issue Goodyear Performance ZR16 tires on the BMW I rented. NOTHING was snow tire about them...they were tread patterns made to whip around the autobahn. So if it's law, fine, but I'm not paying for something I was never given. Maybe their terrible company put in the fine print that you also needed to ASK for the tyres after paying for them. Mech Issue #1 : The check engine light came on and I found out there was no oil in the car. I know this sounds weird, but you need to have oil in the damn car for it to operate. There's no manual in the car so I take a few minutes to try to figure out if there is any special oil that needs to be included...all the oil cap says is "BMW recommends Castrol"...awesome, cause that helps. I finally decide that it's probably standard synthetic and go in to purchase oil. After comparing a few I find one is Diesel and one must be not diesel. I purchase that one for a lovely 17 euros and fill that car up. Vehicle Maintenance Issue #2 : Still worried I put the wrong oil in, sure enough the check engine light comes on again but this time its RED instead of YELLOW..which means bad news. So now I'm scared shitless of the car seizing up (for the second time) because I put the wrong oil in. While driving in a slight panic I am still able to figure out how to give me a code on the computer and it says CC-ID 63...cause I have a fucking clue what that means. So I turn on my data on my iphone and start to google it (nice $23 charge in service for that one). Turns out its no tire pressure. So first no oil, now no air. Does anyone even review the cars before giving them to the customers? So I go off the highway for the nearest town and fill up on air. I was told that since I signed a contract there's nothing they will do for me. So fine, I got screwed. But I will never rent from Dollar or Thrfity again. read more

AVOID BUCHBINDER but if you do rent from Buchbinder TAKE MANY PICTURES! I always take around 25 pictures BEFORE I get into any rental car and drive it off the lot. I do that with any car company in any country. In April 2015 I rented a car from Buchbinder at FRA airport and after I returned the car they charged me around 1000 Euro around $1,400 at the time. The pictures they sent me showed damage which can be seen on my pictures at time of pickup. In other words, they tried to make me pay for old damaged that I did not cause. They gave me an immediate refund after I emailed my pictures to Buchbinder. I will never again rent from BUCHBINDER. I would rather walk or ride a bicycle. read more

Of course, we were too exhausted from the flight with a crying baby, to find another car. Evil, horrible company. Do not rent from them. So I arrived in Germany yesterday morning and had my rental car reservation from the US wit Dollar Rental Car, I had rented a car from them several times before in the US so I thought it would be OK to rent one from them in Germany as well - boy was I wrong!!! After an 12 hour flight I arrive at 6.30h in the morning in Frankfurt, Terminal 1, I immediately follow the sign to Car Rental and after a 15 minute walk throughout the entire terminal 1 I finally get to the Car Rental Court, I see Hertz, Europcar, Sixt, Avis, Enterprise but NO sign from Dollar, so I ask one of the other rental agents and she tells me "Dollar is not in Terminal 1, they are only in Terminal 2". Great!!! and why do they try to hide that and can't inform their customers in advance, so they don't have to run all over the Airport after such a long flight and waste their time searching for Dollar? Or maybe put up a sign to point the other way to Terminal 2? Just my suggestion! OK, so I have to walk all the way back to where I just came from, up the stairs, getting in the little tram to Terminal 2, get out at the stop, down the stairs and again NO motherf... sign from Dollar, WTF??? And did I mention that I had to do all that with pulling and carrying my luggage? So I see all the other rental car companies again, Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Enterprise, and Terstappen - yes, Terstappen, who is Terstappen And than I spot a little sticker on the side which may give you an idea that they handle Dollar and Thrifty in Europe - Great!! I finally found them. A little shack with 2 guys sitting there and finally it is my turn to pick up my car when the drama continuous. So I check in with my Driver's license, Credit Card and AA Miles Program, when he tells me - they don't give Airline Miles, I was not aware of that since it did not specify that on my booking in America. - They don't accept the Credit Card rental insurance Program from American Express. - I only have a reservation but I did not pay yet through my Booking through Expedia - which I thought I already did! so at this time I was almost ready to explode! I specifically requested a "Diesel" car in advance, I called Dollar in Germany, Ireland, UK and US to ensure that they have that type of car for me, when they confirmed "yes we do Sir" (you have to understand that Diesel is cheaper in Europe and since I plan to drive a lot it would be more economic, plus they drive a lot faster on the Autobahn compared to regular gas engines, and I want to drive fast of course, normally 100 MPH up to 140 MPH) So of course - NO Diesel car there for me - no problem - I check for a larger category car and upgrade - and still no car - no Diesel - what do you mean? No car and no Diesel? - kein Auto und kein Diesel - they only have this little French car called "Renault Clio", I am German, do you think I want to drive a French car in Germany, really? Hell NO!! So they have no more cars available - I say what? Where am I here at a little province Airport or at Europe's largest Airport? And still no car no diesel for me. I ended up to rental a total overprices car from Hertz but I learned my lesson. So just a little tip from me: If you plan to enjoy your vacation or business trip in Germany please don't try to book your Rental car with Dollar, it will save you a lot of trouble!! read more

I also wish I had seen these reviews before I rented my car from (Thrifty) Buchbinder in August 2014. The agent told me that my United VISA card's insurance was not acceptable. I rented through a broker (Auto Europe) and I specifically checked the coverage prior to booking. I had the rental agreement with me -- there was no disclosure from the broker that a "letter" would also be necessary. Despite my protests, the agent would not release the car to me prior to my "accepting" the Thrifty coverage. I would gladly have walked across the hall and rented from another company, but since I went through a broker, I was faced with risking the entire pre-paid rental fee by walking away. Was charged 164 Euros for the insurance and a 600 Euro deposit. The agent seemed practiced, as though she has done this before many times to unsuspecting travelers. Now like the others, am faced with disputing the charges. I will never rent through Thrifty or Dollar again - ever and anywhere. For Germany, I will use SIXT next time. read more

DO NOT rent from them. The rental agent spoke English poorly and was difficult to deal with. I carried an $800 insurance policy with my credit card company (Visa) so declined all of their other offers (check your card, you probably have it to). We had no problems with the car, other cars, nothing - but when we returned the car a scratch appeared on the left rear panel. We had filled the car with gas less than 30 minutes before returning and there was no scratch there. It is not visible in any photos. Guess what they charged my credit car for damage - yep, $800. This is a scam - I'm also outraged that my credit card company won't dispute the charge and decline to pay them, which I will keep fighting. I've filed a claim, but I am so disgusted by this experience. read more

Extreme rudeness and ripoff at Buchbinder! Stay away! Extremely rude manager at the front desk at Buchbinder in Cologne airport made 3 hours of our vacation time near to unbearable. All the way we were proceeding with taking a car from him was a nightmare because of his rudeness and contempt. He started from rolling his eyes and sighing heavily in respond to our "Hello". It made us feel like we were the reason of all his troubles. Then he tried to cheat with charging us extra money for one way trip which had been already payed. Just after we insisted twice on double checking he agreed not to charge for this. He was obviously not right but never apologized. On my question which car he was going to give us, he simply told us "wait" and didn't announced it until he gave the key. It turned out that we've got Skoda Octavia which is 1 meter longer than ordered VW Golf and thus was not convenient at all. He answered cynically that "Skoda is also made by VW" - what a nice joke! The worst thing happened later - Buchbinder's navigation system Tom Tom didn't work properly. He didn't tell a word about the specific of those navigators - they take about 5 kilometers of driving don't-know-where away from airport to start receiving GPS signal - very unexpectedly and not very much comfortably. So we just could not move on as we didn't have a map, we just made a circle around parking lot and came back. When I came to the desk asking to change the navigation he became angry and tried just to get rid of me - no sorry, no care, no help. He chucked another navigator at me. Then the story repeated - we made wider circle around airport and it didn't turn on so we had to park somewhere and run another kilometer by foot to change it once again. When he saw me for the second time he became absolutely furious and gave the 3rd one with usb port which at the end didn't work in a car (we tested it on Iphone - no connection). The battery got off and I made my 3rd kilometer to the Bunchbinder desk to change. No sorry, no concern - instead he burst out shouting at me that "you couldn't pay for a car with built-in navigation, what do you want from me!!" (c). What a tolerance, what a customer oriented approach, what a service! Why should I spend 3 hours of my time being abased and sorted out navigation fails? Which became my own problem. Finally we just got it and made our way to nowhere, after 5 km driving in opposite direction it found a satellite. When return a car remember that you will have to drop a navigation to another Buchbinder office in airport - you must carry it to arrivals which is very inconvenient because you actually need departures. I rent a car at HUMBURG AIRPORT and after return it back ...10 days after they charge my card with 400euro saying that there is a scratch. My excess was 350 euro. They dont anwer to emails and they dont hung up the telephone or they dont speak English. That happen to me after 30 years renting a car and especially at Germany. Please avoid this company Buchbinder. Because I dont want other people to have that experience i send this case to EEC-NET and to my Lawyer . I did my due diligence, researched rules and came prepared with two letters, one from Mastercard, another from Visa. They didn't take Visa's letter but took Mastercards letter and truly waived insurance fees to my great relief. We were promised Ford Mondeo Estate (name for Station Wagon) or similar but got Seat Altea XL which fit us well. Desk and garage staff were nice to us and our kids. Wanted to pump up the rating seeing all are upset about being refused just their card with no letter. They are a discounter and have some probably hard to explain rules dictated probably by they lawyers... Desk people aren't at fault by demanding what their procedure says. All, bring letters from your Mastercard and you'll be good. Car served us well for France-Lux-Belgium-NL-Germany long roadtrip. read more

BEWARE OF FRAUD!!! I rented a car from them in May and wrote a bad review on their website which they totally erased. Short story...rented a car for about a week for under $200 USD. Brought it back to the airport rental car area in Frankfurt (luckily a friend was with me). Dropped off the keys in the drop box. They claimed there was car damage and tried to charge about $2k USD on my account. I warned my credit card company (CHASE). Buchbinder stopped but turned around and charged me about $500 for the car rental. I disputed this with Chase. They supported me and the dispute was awarded in my favor since I produced the receipt. Now Buchbinder sends me a letter telling me I owe them 493.32 euros. They are a fraud. read more

Dollar rent a car finally answered me. They told me they had to replace the hubcap (because of a two inch scratch!) and it cost me almost $400. They did return the rest of my deposit. It feels like a scam to me. Why do I have to buy a new hubcap for a three year old rental car? Why do they have you check for scratches in a dark garage but return it in a very bright one? For all I know, the scratch was there when we got the car. I am very disappointed and will nerve rent from dollar again. read more

I realize so many people have shared their story about how awful this company (budget / buchbinder rent a car) really is. Same insurance and tire scam happened to me in the Frankfurt airport and of course not knowing about the insurance I said ok to their lower deductible even though I had a credit card with insurance included. After returning the car for a total of two days a scratch no more then half an inch across was located by the inspector upon return. He said that he had to mark it down because his boss was after him and he would be fired if he did not. BS.... this is a scam to make more money off of you. So the company takes my full deposit as my insurance had 600EUR deductible and of course Visa insurance we are not paying because you agreed to their insurance. I finally tell capital one I am not paying this and they refund my ridiculous charge. now two months later I get a mail from Budget saying I still owe 600 Eur and please pay immediately. I rented and prepaid through rentalcars.com. When I arrive at the Munich Airport address they say I still owe $300, which I did not. I show the receipt and the clerk states they will not bill me. 3 days later they bill me the $300 additional and will not remove it or help me. The absolute worst car rental experience in my 25 years of renting cars. Where do I even start? I wasted 2 hours of precious time with a crooked car rental agency that would not accept me to rent with my American Express corporate card AFTER I accepting the booking with the same car online! BUT, had I agreed to pay anywhere from $20-40 per day for extra insurance, they would have gladly honored my booking anyway. I wouldn't touch this agency with a 10 foot pole. FRAUDULENT business practices-stay away. This may be the single worst car rental experience we have ever had. They seemed rather resistant to the idea that we already had insurance coverage not thru them and kept trying to force it on us. I should have known then to turn around and run. After having the car on our vacation, and taking very good care of it, we returned the car with a full tank of gas in perfect condition, except had a flat on the highway on the way to the airport due to nail in tire and by the grace of god my husband was able to change it. They were not able provide roadside assistance when we called , so don't count on that either. When we arrived they were very sympathetic and said it's common for flats to happen , and we would not be liable for any damages or further payment. Sign off on that and off we go. Great! Or so we thought. Then, 2 months later, a random charge appears on our credit card . No call, no email, no explanation or notification just $400 charged on our card by buchbinder. When you call them, they will never actually answer the phone or put you in touch with someone who can explain the charge, nor give you a reason for it. So, since that is considered FRAUD , my credit card company was gracious enough to cancel it. Then buchbinder they sent me an invoice 4 months later by snail mail saying I must have overlooked the charge. Haha, Nope, they are well aware of what they are doing. I never overlooked it . I just refuse to pay fraudulent charges on my card and my credit card company agrees. Don't allow them to have any of your personal info, or you , too may become a victim of their dishonest business practices. Also file a compliant with the German version of the better business bureau if you can so someone can shut this company down as soon as possible. read more

I agree with the other negative reviewers, this is bait and switch and you're guaranteed a horrible experience. I had booked a car through travelocity. Guaranteed total price in writing. I show up, here's what they tell me: The car has WInter tires on. It's a requirement by the government so they charge Euro 13 per day for the winter tires....... I asked if lights, brakes and other things were required as well and how much that would cost extra. I'll give them that: Lights and brakes (also required by law) were INCLUDED In the price. But not the tires, that's an extra Euro 13 per day. Which insurance did I want? The 20 or 26 Euro a day? I wanted to decline insurance as I have it on my credit card. Oh sure I could waive the insurance if I had brought the writtenletter from Mastercard explaining that they cover it. Well, guess what? Everyone knows credit cards cover it and I've never been asked to show written proof. And no, I had not caled MAstercard and asked them to send me a letter in advance. Oh well, then they'd have to charge me the 20+13=33 Euro per day on top of my guaranteed total price. What a joke, my rental was suddenly doubled. And while we discussed this, three other people had the exact same discussion. After 30 minutes on the phone with Travelocity, they booked me a car with Enterprise for less than what Dollar had quoted me. AND TIRES WERE INCLUDED!!!! All four of them.... AND I could decline coverage. THe lady at Enterprise told me that all cars are fully insured by law, the only thing the extra insurance gets you is a lower deductible than the standard Euro 1,000. SO all I would be ever liable for with no insurance would be Euro1K in case MAstercard for some reason wouldn't cover it which in the past has been no problem. read more

Because of the reviews, I checked the fine print and saw that for US credit card holders, ONLY Mastercard with a letter accompanying it (INSANE!) can be used to waive the limited damage waiver insurance. Awful experience. The rental return agent asked me to sign a rental return form. He appeared to be in a a hurry but there was no line. No coustomer was there other than myself. I signed it but I wanted to read through the form carefully. Less than 10 seconds later, he grab the form out of my hand. Then I protested. How can anyone grab the form out of my hand while I was reading it. I wanted his name. He would not give it to me. He said people upstairs will recognize the signature. I went to the rental car agents upstairs and complained. They could not recognize the signature. So one agent went downstairs to see what was going on. I waited. However, I was short on time because I had to catch my plane back to the US. So, I could not wait longer. I think these guys know people will not complain because most people are in a hurry to catch their plane. I will never rent from them again. Truly awful. Cheap, but know what you are getting. They found a 4mm scratch (which is disputable whether it was actually us) and charged over 550 euros. While I don't mind paying for damage costs, what they offer is a legal scam. My wife made our reservations with Dollar in Frankfurt. She tens to ignore user comments. Never again. Dollar is a ZERO star operation, a well practiced BAIT AND SWITCH. I have read many of the 1 star reviews below. All of them are true and probably are not duly detailed of the depths of Dollar Rental Hell. All of the other agencies accept US VISA and Master Card accounts without a special letter from the credit card company saying they will honor your card. All of the other companies we contacted after our Dollar Hell experience accept your US insurance coverage. Dollar demands specific letters from each addressed to Dollar. Otherwise they charge you MUCH MOIRE for the insurance than the car itself. Everyone in the long lines ahead of us met with the same scam, were shocked, angry and swore never to deal with Dollar ANYWHERE again. They pull this with EVERYONE. Get set for your "guaranteed price" to double or triple. Then they send you to the basement to pick up your car in a dark and filthy area where you have no light to inspect for damage. You have to back up to where smug clowns are polishing BMWs under one light to grab a rag fromt he BMW guy and scrape off enough of the bird poop/bug remains/thick mud to see and photograph the MANY scratches and paint problems. The bored attendant made little notes on my receipt of the damage, which was on virtually every body panel. The guy was offended that I wanted to use his rag to check out the car. He never lifted a finger to clean the car or help look for damage. He just made his little scribbles while I scrubbed and tried to get a decent view with my camera in the garbage lighting conditions. There were MANY problems with the car including bleached paint that was only visible after cleaning off a lot of the car. Apparently the only things that come standard with Dollar are the bugs and filth on the car and the guaranteed rude service at the counter. Dollar also fails to give clear instructions as to where to return the car. You can only return it to the Terminal 2 lot. The others can use either area. Dollar is the pariah. Dollar doesn't even tell you that if you take the wrong turn to Terminal 2, you end up going up and down pay parking lot corkscrews endlessly until a nice airport attendant well familiar with Dollar walked us to the specific alleyway that led to Dollar's spot. That cost us another 45 minutes, huge frustration, and almost a late arrival at check-in. The Dollar staff seem to be trained and well practiced at delivering their bait and switch scams with straight faces. Customer DISSERVICE is their strong point. If you want to use a GPS (advised), buy one in the US with the European maps or just buy a cheapy Garmin or Tomtom with all of the European maps at a store near the airport for 75 euros. Dollar charges 15 euros per day to rent theirs. We will register ours and do the one-time update just before we head back to Europe in a few months. It's far cheaper than dealing with Dollar, emotionally and financially. Save your time and frustration. Use ANY AGENCY except Dollar. read more

Is there a lower than 1 star rating? Unfortunately I did not read these reviews nor all the fineprint on Dollar's webpage when I made my reservation. I have rented from them many times in the US and there they are a decent operation. But my experience in Frankfurt was the same as most of the others: no accepting my Visa Signature Insurance coverage and insisting of buying winter tires while the temps outside where lovely 25C. Their practices are very well known by the other car rental companies who are getting many of their disgruntled clients, unless they have prepaid and are really out of options. Fortunately I only reserved and did not prepay, so I could walk away from my Euro138.-- deal for a VW Golf for one week that would have cost me at the end close to Euro 500.--. Sixt was sold out but told me how awful they feel for all the clients day by day getting screwed by Dollar. Enterprise, who also confirmed the fraudulent activities by Dollar/Thrifty/Buchbinder, did had a car for me and lucky me, I ended up only with double the cost for a small car (VW Polo instead of VW Golf). But I must say, Enterprise did try hard to find something reasonable for me and gave me a rate, normally not used with walk-ups. Like the other comments on this side: Do yourself a favor and take ANY other Car rental company besides DOLLAR/THRIFTY/BUCHBINDER to avoid any disappointments and much higher cost that you have anticipated. I did contact Dollar directly about my experiences, but after reading these comments, there is no way, they are not aware about the dealings of their German agency (they are not running it themselves but using a fulfilling agent). So I do not expect any meaningful answer. They have lost me for good as a customer for all my US travels (I am going back and forth between my residency in Ecuador and my home and company in Florida). I will contact Capital One, the issuer of my Visa Signature card I am using for all my travels year round. I will make them aware about the discrimination of VISA card holders by the company DOLLAR (yes, they are using an agent but I still feel Dollar is fully responsible for what is going on in Germany). Let's just hope, this little shack in Terminal 2 that houses Dollar/Thrifty/Buchbinder will disappear as more and more potential clients are avoiding this scam, and it will dry up their business. read more

This place is so terrible, it doesn't deserve a single star (but thanks Yelp! for making me give them one)! The staffing is low, so guests have to wait for a long time in order to get the car. The staff members are rude and extremely unhelpful. While the prices for the car rental are low, it's not worth the stress and hassle! read more

NO NO NO!!! DO NOT BOOK HERE! I booked my car with Buchbinder, as they were the cheapest and I could not find anything "off" reading through the contract. When we arrived in Stuttgart (my home town), I got the idea that they are trying to rip off people from other countries, as they might not be as comfortable speaking up when they are presented their 100% raise in charge (as you could find in the general terms and conditions, as nobody ever reads through those). I booked the car for $193 and nowhere (even after looking into it again) in the contract did it say that I had to pay another 216 Euro for an insurance when picking up the car. The woman there was not rude, but very unhelpful and I could neither reject the insurance, nor could I cancel the car. I was left with a bill more than twice as high as I expected. The car was uncomfortable to drive and had absolutely no horse power. We were truly embarrassed to drive around in this expensive rental car with (for some freaking reason) Austrian plates. All in All: stay away from Buchbinder. They are neither honest, nor service orientated. When I contacted the customer service, I had to deal with a rude woman that was obviously trying to make me give in, by hardly ever responding and if so, simply repeating herself. Very bad experience. Line up to pick up more than 2 hours. Charges for insurance deposit and Zone 2 EU countries applied to my credit card before I even left the airport as well as paying for the rental term in full. Still waiting for insurance deposit to be put back on my card from rental that ended over two weeks ago. read more

I wish I had seen these reviews before I rented my car from Dollar aka Buchbinder at Frankfurt. Everything others have said I just experienced in September, 2014. 1) Primary Insurance from AMEX wasn't accepted -- I'd be fine with them not liking it, but the problem was they wouldn't let me waive the fee at my own risk and I had to pay the mandated LDW. Had a Visa with primary coverage as well, but no letter. 2) The $600 deposit was charged to my AMEX even though they specifically said it was a "hold" not a charge. This has triggered 2 charges: a foreign currency change fee, and a second AMEX car insurance rental coverage fee. 3) They said the car required "reconditioning" when I returned it, when it had nothing more than the usual usage over the course of a 2-week rental period. I'm waiting for this charge. I refused to sign the return paperwork, and proceeded to photograph the car inside and out. So now I face the need to call AMEX, dispute charges, and work through this mess. Never again! And not only won't I rent from Dollar in Frankfurt, but probably nowhere else as well. read more

NEVER RENT A CAR FROM THIS COMPANY. NEVER EVER EVER EVER. I rented a car at their Dusseldorf airport location. Our flight was delayed, so a super rude manager told me that they my car was gone, and that I should have given them my flight number so they would have kept it, so "it is your fault". All other rentals didn't have any car either, so I waited. Eventually, they gave me a car for 30 Euros extra. I drove to Dortmund and back (roughly 100 km roundtrip), and returned the car 4 hours later. No incidents on the way. Now they have come back to me with some bogus claims of a damage to one of the rims, and are asking for 450 Euros extra. I rent 20-25 cars every year and I have never had any issues in the last 20 years. This is was the first time I tried this company. Never again. I wished there were negative scores to give on yelp. read more

Fraud - Rent-a-car - Mega drive, Inter Rent, Buchbinder (Vienna) I have booked a car rental in Economy bookings´s website, on the 21st of February, for my holidays in Austria. The pick up was in Vienna center, on the 25th of February, and the drop-off in Vienna Airport on the 1st of March. When I booked the car in this website, the car rental company was Inter Rent. When I got to their office in Vienna, for my surprise, I have checked that Buchbinder and Mega drive companies were the main rental cars companies working there. There was no Inter Rent... And I knew the bad reputation these companies had. They gave me a Slovakian (?) car in good conditions as well as the map with the car condition. There were two spots signed there and I have checked the rest of the car and there was no more dents or scratches. As agreed, I dropped the car in Vienna airport, checked that the car was in the same conditions as when I picked it up and left the keys on buchbinder's box. I couldn't believe when, after 13 days (??), this company contacted me alleging that my car was damaged. After this, I had in my email one invoice in the amout of € 878,00, for damage repair, and one day after I had that debit on my account. I did not authorize and do not agree with the payment of € 878,00 value. This is a fraud situation and I will take court action against this company. read more

The staff here are pathetic! We arrived from our 14hr flight 2 hrs early and attempted to pick up our hire car. We were extremely tired and with 2 babies we just wanted to get out of the airport. We were told it wasn't there yet but we could hire another car for an extra 25 Euro a day which I declined. We were then told that it wasn't ready for another hour. We came back an hour later and was told the car still wasn't ready but we could hire a different car for an extra 15 Euro a day, We had the booking for almost a month so this was quite expensive. Again we were told that the car wasn't at the airport. Finally when I went back to the counter we were given our car however it was not remotely close to the car we had ordered the car had not recently been driven as I checked the engine and it was cold and not recently driven. We were told the car was not at the airport however it was there the whole time. We were lied to in an attempt to sell us a higher priced car. I also saw staff tell another customer there car wasn't ready either and sell them a car. In further dealings and complaints about this with the company they have only continually lied about what occured. Other people have had fake insurance scams with this company which would not surprise me at all. read more

Like many others who have dealt with them, I got to the rental desk only to find out that Dollar would not honour the conditions stated on my voucher !! As simple as that, they just ignore them. They simply do what they like. I am amazed that a business can behave like this at Frankfurt Airport and none can do anything about it?? read more

I'm a frequent traveler, but this was the worst experience ever. They wanted to put me in a car way smaller than the type of car I booked (BMW 3 series or similar). So I had to upgrade to a decent car for an extra €16 per day! The car wasn't clean at all. When I returned the car they said there were new scratches on the driver side door molding. Minimal, I'd overlooked them probably (how strange at 7am after a 10 hr intercontinental flight). Fast forward. Back home I received an invoice for €756.94 for damages on the car including windshield, 'loading edge', window bar, front bumper, allow wheels. They also send me the intake form with a signature that's definitely NOT mine! STAY AWAY, THESE GUYS ARE A COMPLETE FRAUD! THEY CLAIM FALSE DAMAGES AND FALSIFY SIGNATURES! read more

I recently rented a car from Buchbinder (Frankfurt, Airport). I had read a lot of the negative reviews about Buchbinder, but thought, they must have changed otherwise they wouldn't be in business anymore - I was soo wrong! I booked via the Rental.com on the internet and made a mistake when typing the length of the rental period, but one is not able to correct anything once typed. At the counter in Frankfurt, they said, that one can only change it online. Since this proved to be impossible, I contacted Buchbinder Customer Service. After reminders, they replied: "Sorry can't change". So instead of paying Euro 19.37 per day, they charged Euro 56.48. They also doubled the deposit, because I used a foreign credit card (American Express) and made me take extra insurance (which I never took with other car rental companies). Lucky I have a German passport and driving license, otherwise who knows what else they would have done! The car was a Skoda, which was ok, but had a Slovenian number plate. At times it felt like all the Audis, BMWs and Mercedes didn't want me on the Autobahn, especially not in front of them! When I left the car rental area towards the Autobahn, I noticed that the brakes made a screeching sound, but that stopped after I drove for a while. There is more, but the main point is use a company which cares about their reputation!! read more

We had the same scam as everyone else. We returned the car perfect, full tank of gas. they charged 800 euros for supposed windshield damage. When we asked to see pics they showed pics with a dot the size of a pinprick. We even had insurance, but they claim the windshield is not covered. This is obviously their business model, no coincidence everyone has the same thing happen to them. read more

Scammed!! I didn't realise companies are still able to get away with this sort of behaviour. Buchbinder and Global rent a car are making a fortune by ripping customers off. Just wish I read the Trustpilot reviews before booking with them. I assumed they must be reputable when booking through Rental Cars, big mistake. To cut a long story short I was charged £1000 for a 'scratch'. Which was NOT there when I returned the car. Watch out for Buchbinder car rental. They deserve negative rating! This company engages in out and out thievery. They claimed after a 2 week rental that I was involved in an accident in which the front license plate corner was bent. Seriously!!! They helped themselves to 1000 Euros via my credit card without my knowledge, which ultimately overdrew my bank account because I automatically pay my balance on that particular account. They have no phone number which can be reached from the US to complain. Then found out Buchbinder has been written up in Germany for fraudulent business practices. Had I not accidentally noticed when loading the trunk, that the rear license plate on this car was hanging by a "thread" who knows what that would have cost, ultimately. This whole thing started when I signed up on the Web with Dollar from the States. On arrival in Germany I found out that Dollar has a contract with Buchbinder in Germany. Dollar/Thirfty does not do business in Germany. On complaining to Dollar/Thrifty here in the US, they simply told me that they're only an agent to the independently owned Buchbinder. Therefore no help from Dollar/Thrifty. Lesson learned: I'll never deal with Dollar/Thrifty again here in the States nor of course Buchbinder in Germany or anywhere else. I'll rent from one of the worldwide majors, pay a few dollars extra but will save myself the fraud and financial hassle. See other review below from 6/3/2014 regarding the insurance scam to which I also was subjected. If I had more time and money to throw at this, I would have pursued legal recourse against Buchbinder. By keeping the financial costs of the victim in check they know that they will likely not be pursued legally, but will profit handsomely when multiplying their shenanigans by the hundreds and thousands. read more

Stay away from Buchbinder. They actively look for loopholes to rip off their customers. Several requirements are in fine print and they don't disclose them until you are at the counter and in a rush to pick up your vehicle. Dollar is also complicit in this because they rent their name to Buchbinder in Germany but when you complain to them, they look the other way and say that they're only the middleman. So it's a cheap trick for Dollar to lure you with attractive rental prices, thinking you're renting from a US-based rental agency, then when you show up at the counter, you're dealing with Buchbinder whom you wished you had googled before you got there. 1) They demanded I pay for rental insurance even though I already had it covered through my Citi Prestige World Elite Mastercard. After being shocked that they needed a written letter of insurance coverage, I contacted the credit card and they were kind enough to email me a letter right away. But since it didn't have the Mastercard emblem on the letter, they said it wasn't enough documentation to decline their insurance! Not even their fine print language said anything about a Mastercard emblem being required on the letter! 2) They demanded I pay extra for winter tires. Again, they presented me with the fine print language which was never given to me at the time of reservation. The language said that there was an option to decline the winter tires but be responsible for any damages that occur as a result of declining the winter tires. Given that it was 50 degress Fahrenheit in Munich, sunny and absolutely no ice or snow on the ground, I declined this option. But they responded saying they have no cars without winter tires in stock. So this "option" became mandatory and I had to pay for it. 3) When I picked up the car, it was 5/8 tank full of gas. I pointed this out to the guy in the garage who agreed and notated my rental agreement accordingly. When I dropped off the car, I was cognizant to fill up the gas to 5/8 tank full. The counter agent printed out a receipt documenting that I owe nothing further. A few days later, I was charged an additional 94 euros on my credit card for the gas!! I will file a dispute with my credit card company to recoup my money but I must say this is the most fraudulent company I've ever dealt with. I hope we all warn other travelers of their shady practices and eventually drive them out of business. read more

Research in the internet, its full of complains. Would avoid if you want to have a good renting experience. In my experience there was a very rude customer service, a long waiting to be attended which finally after 30 -45 minutes of waiting, the counter person was not capable of understanding a non german license in roman letters, which i have always use in the EU and its fully valid. They rejected without any basis and didn't want to refund my money!!! In the website they don't give any information and mislead you on the counter...Called the initial booking website for a complete refund which they will do as there was no reason for them not to let me rent. Just saw many reviews like this and much worse in the internet, so be careful! read more
