The town of Patterdale is but a small berg on the famed Coast to Coast hike I was on and is probably best known for a couple of large hotels up the road where tourists park their cars and spend their time around no one really special to chat with. The Old School folks will have none of that. They're instantly likable, genuine and interesting people. The facility is small, cozy and at least for my room it was quite small but you have to remember, I came here by myself, wanted a quiet room and a cozy bed, a great breakfast to power me up and over the lengthy hills for 6-8 hours at a time. Did they deliver? And how. Their traditional English breakfast was hands down one of the top 2-3 of my trip. Look, if you're wanting a massive suite for a romantic weekend getaway this might not be the place. If you're on the C2C hike which brings over 10,000+ (estimated) to this little village each summer and you need a place to stay, this is hard to beat for what they offer for the price. You have to realize that without this hike coming through here most of these small towns couldn't have B&Bs like this. Need a pint and a meal? The village pub White Lion is just down the road a few hundred yards. Easy enough to stumble back dead tired and retreat to your room. Probably the most memorable conversation at a B&B with the owners I had in the 7 nights I was on the trail. Located down a small winding road, Holly Lodge Guest House is snugly situated near a few other guest houses and looked very quaint when we stepped through the gate. When we rung the doorbell, a cheery woman cam bustling out and gave us our keys and asked us to fill out a breakfast survey of what we wanted to eat the next morning. She was very giggly and very friendly and made us feel very welcomed! We had to lug our suitcases up the stairs because the place was not equipped with any elevators, but what can you expect from a place that's been renovated from a normal house to a guest lodge (the owners still live downstairs in the house though). However, when we got opened the door, we were pleasantly surprised because the room consisted of two separate rooms connected together by an open door. Each room had a tv and queen-sized bed and one room was connected to the bathroom. Everything was so organized and clean it looked like a hotel suite! Since we stayed here for two nights, we got to experience what their tidying service was like, and it did not disappoint. Every time we came back from a long day of exploring Windermere and the Lake District, all our beds had been tidied, our bathrooms cleaned, and even our strewn papers, books, and bottles of shampoo and makeup neatly lined up in order. Definitely great service! For breakfast, there were four options for hot food: bacon sandwich, traditional British (sausage, poached egg, beans, mushrooms, tomatoes, bacon, and black pudding), smoked salmon with scrambled eggs and toasted muffins, vegetarian, and toasted crumpets. For the first breakfast there, my sister, my mom and I all chose the smoked salmon and my dad the traditional British. Holly Lodge also gives tenants the option of asking them to prepare take-away sandwich meals (£5 each), and we decided to do that for next day's lunch as we had to leave for the train station early and did not have time to buy lunch after breakfast. I placed our order to the owners at the back of the house, and the owner was very willing to adapt to our request (she only had ham and cheese in the house but the flier had indicated beef, chicken, and tuna were also options and we wanted one beef and one chicken). The next day, she gave us our orders on time in giant paper bags. When we peered in, we were surprised to see not only sandwiches in each bag, but granola bars, bottled waters, potato crisps, and fresh fruit inside! Definitely worth our money! The rooms are spacious and decorated in style to the cottage. There are 5 bedrooms spread over the 2 upstairs floors. 3 rooms with double beds and the others are dorm type with 3 and 5 single beds in. Plenty of bath/shower rooms. There is only a limited amount of parking so we had to double park. Outside in the garden there is a BBQ and dining area. There is also a small shed with the hot tub in. The hot tub had a very strong smell of chlorine so if your planning on using it, leave the doors open for a few hours before to circulate the air a bit. The cottage is a 5 minute walk from the train station and local supermarket, it's also very close to the town centre which had every kind of shop you could hope for.

We were greeted upon arrival by a really friendly member of staff who let us leave our bags behind reception while we went exploring, as we had arrived before check in time. When we returned, one the most enthusiastic and welcoming people met us and showed us our room and gave us some great tips on where were the best places to eat near by. A big thumbs up! The rooms position within the hotel was a little odd as we were directly off the main dining area, but there was a stair way that took us away from the noise and gave us privacy thank god! The room was perfectly adequate, the only real problem was the towels could have been bigger; which for me is pretty good as i find problems with everything! My wife and I vacationed here for our honeymoon, and we were absolutely thrilled with The Ryelands. Lyn is personable and very professional. She exudes a genuine concern and care for her guests. The rooms are fantastically comfortable, and extremely well situated within walking distance of "downtown" Grasmere. Our room, the Silver Howe, has a lovely view with an ever so faint glimpse of Grasmere Lake. The "negative" aspects of this property are actually what makes it wonderful as well. The flat screen television is VERY small with a limited channel selection, and is not easily visible while lying down on the bed (it should be mounted on the wall for better viewing). This is actually a positive, since one shouldn't expect to spend much time in the room, and time would be better spent reading Wordsworth than watching a rerun of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" The staircase leading up to the bedrooms is moderately steep and narrow--a daunting gauntlet for large suitcases or obese rear ends. And don't expect to wheel a suitcase or anything up the gravel driveway to the property. It makes a lovely crunching sound as you walk, but it's impossible to drag anything with wheels smaller than a moving dolly or hand truck. Still, the property is utterly gorgeous. The owners/operators are personable, helpful and inviting. Their breakfasts are delicious. The towels are surprisingly soft, and smell of soothing lavender. It's easy to get "caught up" in the romantic feel of Grasmere from The Ryelands. I HIGHLY recommend The Ryelands over ANY other property in Grasmere, including the famous Wordsworth Hotel. I would award The Ryelands a 5-star rating if: 1. The flat screen television was wall-mounted and maybe connected to a simple DVD player. It's a seemingly silly request, but it's what I would expect from a 5-star establishment. 2. Breakfast service ends slightly too early (around 9 or 10 AM). I would expect a 5-star establishment to provide a simple, continental breakfast option for guests who choose to dine after those hours. 3. The downstairs office uses a secured wireless internet connection, but no access is provided for guests. I would expect a 5-star establishment to provide or charge for in-room internet access. With the relatively low cost of wireless-N routers, I do not believe this to be an unreasonable request.
