I started going to this health center based on a recommendation from someone I know who works there. I started off with one doctor, and ended up seeing Cooke on a subsequent visit. So far, though other doctors were good, Cooke is my favorite. I was diagnosed with an endocrine and autoimmune disorder a couple of years ago, and while I'm grateful to the doctor that caught it in my lab tests, she didn't have much of a bedside manner, and didn't explain things I needed to know about my condition very well. Dr. Cooke took time to answer my questions and seems to be aware of the latest protocols on treating my particular endocrine disorder. It's also important to me that a doctor treat fat patients with dignity, and I've been consistently happy with him on this issue. In fact, I've recommended him to the "Fat Friendly Health Professionals" database that's kept on the web (google it if you're curious). While I will see another doctor in the practice if he's all booked up, I would prefer to be seen by Cooke whenever possible.

I guess most folks do too because the only downside is that there's usually about a 3 month wait to see her! But I've been lucky that so far I haven't had any emergency issues to need to get in all that quickly so a 3-month wait hasn't been terrible. A few times I've needed prescriptions filled last minute and the staff has always been friendly and extended my refill until I was able to get into see the Dr. Most recently I was in yesterday for my yearly physical. Admittedly, despite being completely enamored with all things having to do with the medical profession, I have a bit of doctor's office phobia when it comes to my own appointments and I get really nervous whenever I visit (nothing personal, docs! I'm just a worrywart!) but the staff here puts me at ease. Everyone is great from the check in front desk staff to the nurses (there is one in particular that I've seen several times and she's the best! I'm terrible with names so I can't recall to give shout her out, sadly!) to the medical student who did my preliminary exam. Dr. Holmstrom is also so sweet and supportive and really friendly. Admittedly I've had a pretty grief-stricken year so anxiety/depression has been a bit of a struggle for me the last few months. She really took the time to talk through some of my issues and make sure that I was taking care of myself through all of it. They really do care here! UofM also has the neat health portal online where you can make appointments, view test results, request refills, etc. Everything you may need at your fingertips 24 hours a day. Just make sure you have your medical record number handy as you'll need it, if you're like me and forget your login & password all.the.time! ALSO--this office also houses the Japanese Family Health Program. This doesn't pertain to me but I think it's great they offer the services to Japanese speaking members of the population (several other clinics in the area service other languages).

The weight loss program they have is a study through the University of Michigan. Only certain people will qualify for the program, but it promises drastic weight loss. They have an admission application and procedure that you have to follow. The diet uses Optifast soups and shakes. You only get 800 calories per day and have to exercise 40 minutes/day. After a few weeks, you can start eating 2 cups of veggies. The physicians and nutritionists that are a part of the program are very kind. I was struggling in September and didn't lose any weight because I was cheating on my diet. I told Dr. Aljuni that I felt like a failure, and she was so nice to me. She said that it was ok, and that I hadn't failed yet. She was very compassionate and motivating. Since that appointment, I've done a lot better. I'm very thankful for this program and hope to continue on the up and up.

They also offer classes such as Vegetarian and Pregnant, Baby Sign Language, Infant Massage, Vaginal Birth After Cesaerian, and many more. They are very supportive of mothers who will homebirth or who have homebirthed babies. I feel it is important to say this because I think sometimes there is a stigma attached to women who choose natural childbirth at home. I especially love their breastfeeding room where they have a breastfeeding group that meets regularly. Everyone who works there is incredibly helpful, especially Beth. I was concerned about post partum depression, and she took me aside and helped me with finding resources. She spent a lot of time one on one with me so I could talk about my concerns. One cool thing is that Beth helped formulate a holistic remedy just for me. It helps calm me if I am feeling panicky. Whether it is a placebo or not, all I know is that it works!

I went in with a sore throat, and they told me I didn't have strep throat and I only had a viral…read moreinfection that would go away on its own. I continued to suffer for a few more days (because they told me not to come back for 5 DAYS) before finally deciding to go to a different walk-in. Turns out, I VERY OBVIOUSLY had strep throat. Then, to top it all off, they decided to charge me over $100 for my visit (yes, even with insurance). I am never going back. Absolutely ridiculous.
