Had a wonderful Uli up from London the other day and whisked him along here to check the place out and grab some grub. The verdict? Same great grub for about £4 a pop. Just wat the doctor ordered for a tasty lunch. Service, friendly, quick and relaxed. Nothing more to add really. This is a definite 'worth a visit' place. Hit it.

Having spent more time in McDonalds over the past couple of years (with friends and friends who…read morehave children and babysitting a couple of grumpy teenagers now and again, and my other half and 2 teenage children), it has changed from my student days nearly 11 years ago. Before it was something that vaguely resembled meat on a soggy bun and watery coke to wash it down served with fries that were maybe potato in a previous lifetime (one good thing back then about McD's, they let you add the salt yourself rather than Wimpy and Burger King where the salt is added when they are cooked), the staff (rarely spoke and were definitely unhelpful) looked about as grey as the burgers and the decor and the furniture was functional not stylish (think lots of moulded plastic). Now they've done an about turn and realised that if they are going to survive they need to change. How have they changed? Well salads for a start, and I don't mean just a few limp bits of lettuce. The salad bowls are well thought out with good choices, garden salad (greens with tomato, cucumber, onion etc), grilled chicken salad and crispy coated chicken salad and Caeser salad (as well as being excellent portion sizes). With all the salads you are given the dressing in a tub, so its up to you how much you slather on. Also on the menu now are Quorn burgers (though I haven't tried these yet, but they actually look really good), so vegetarians now have a choice apart from the obligatory bean burger (which is hit and miss at the best of times). The deserts have also changed and there is now fresh fruit, fruit salads and I've also seen natural yoghurt served with mixed berries. .........and thats just for the adults. What about the kids? We've all seen the documentaries about how badly the kids (and adults!) of today are eating. You only have to turn on the tv to see Jamie Oliver campaigning about school dinners or the fast food documentary 'Super size me' (was it this that prompted some of McD's changes I wonder?) as well as the scary health programmes that tell us that most of todays kids will not have a very long life span thanks to the junk they eat. ............So that brings me back to what McD's now have on offer to children. Before it was chicken nuggets (and I've never seen chicken look like that) covered in ketchup (which is full of sugar and salt), although these options are still available they now offer chicken grills (mini proper chicken breast fillets grilled, no salt, no coatings), carrot sticks, veggie bites, grapes, apples, corn on the cob and fish bites (like fish fingers and 100% fish fillet). These are only a few of the now 108 items available to children for the new happy meals (prices range between 2.49 and 3.49 depending where you go). They also have a nutrition chart for their most popular products and their childrens basic menu printed on the back of the liners they use for the trays, so you can actually see that things are improving and they really are trying to cut down the amount of sugar, fat and salt in their food. Also available (if you ask a member of staff) is a booklet that contains the nutrition facts for every single product they sell (the information is also available on their website). Add to this mix, special offers on burgers that are only available for certain periods of time or on certain days (their Deli sandwiches which look very like Subway's sandwiches). The decor has changed and looks more Jasper Conran than eastern block with swish leather look stools and block sofas. Unfortunately the new look isn't going to last. Only a month after the furniture was changed I started noticing little tears in the fabric, stains on the wood tables and the children's art work which had been up on my previous visit had been removed to show that they had stuck it up with glue. The dried glue 'blobs' still attached to flaking paint. I'll give McD's their due the whole chain has tried to change but in some locations you aren't going to get people eating rabbit food (salads) or being respectful of the furniture. It is meant to be a high turn over restaurant and I have noticed the staff make a lot of fuss around you if you've been sat for more than 30 minutes (you try being quicker when you have kids in tow) if the restaurant is busy in a hope you'll hurry up and leave and vacate your seat for the next hungry hoard coming in. I don't like being rushed especially when I've paid for the privilege to sit down and eat and I've noticed this branch is worse than most at doing it. The toilets were grim and thats about as polite as I can be about them. I'm sure they were clean but the lack of respect I noticed by customer and also staff left the toilets in a very horrid state, with no proper handbasins only the metal wall mounted ones. I realise this is for space saving but I now make a point of trying not to use the facilities! Overall, I try now and avoid this and other McD's as much as possible their recent

Chiefly Onesti's and The Rex. Time to complete the epic saga. Marcantonio's or 'Marr-keys' rests beside Wok Express near Motherwell Library on Hamilton Road, in shouting distance of a few pubs which gets them alot of business. They thrive on the squad of schoolies from Dalziel High School down the road though at lunch time. I dare anyone to try get served in here at lunchtime. The food is great, and not as expensive as other chip shops, with a constant wee production line waiting for you in the hot plate. Sometimes the chips aren't piping hot, but that's about all I have to say as a negative point. They also do a half a fish supper type contraption which is becoming more and more common which I won't argue with one bit. The ice cream, as has been mentioned, is also excellent. There's also something slightly nice about the wee box they give you your food in with Marcantonio's on it, as if they take a wee bit more pride in their business than other places. No reason why they shouldn't either.

Marcantonios is a little chippy quite out of the way from the other chip shops in Motherwell. The staff was very nice and accommodated us by making the BBQ pizza....It was a first for him. We ordered a hamburger, BBQ chicken pizza, friend mushrooms, lamb and cheese french fries. The pizza was very good with delicious crust. The French fries were cooked to order so they were hot and fresh. Everything else we would have needed more drinks to enjoy.

In addition to this, i'm failing in my quest for a cab, so end up having to walk home from Partick to Kelvinbridge carrying a guitar that started out light, then realised halfway home that it was infact a planet and thus started to weigh so. Grrrr is the word of the day, so it was with sheer joy that i spotted this old faithful and huff/puffed my way in for a pizza to drown mt sorrows. 5 mins later later I'm heading home with a hot steaming meat feast in my hand (easy now people) and a happier head. Finding a new chippy in Partick that was well within a good walking distance to our new abode was on my list of 'Things To Do'. So step up Cafe Avanti! This is probably the closest chippy to us & I am happy to report it is a really good chippy. We usually order a sausage supper and either a fish or roast chicken supper with a portion of gravy or curry sauce (yum...slurp!) and every time we have had a take-away from here it has been nothing but damn fine. The chips always seem to be fresh (I get the feeling they only cook their chips in small batches at a time as you quite often have to wait for chips - which I always like as it means they'll be SUPER FRESH!) and their battered sausage & fish is always tasty. My favourite is their roast chicken...oh my! This avian delight is simply nom-tastic...you have to wait about 15mins for it (we usually pop into nearby Morrisons) but it is worth the wait. You get a HUGE quarter (I think? It seems much bigger though) of chicken all for £5.30 (for the supper) I think that price is pretty good considering how much you get & the size/quality of the chicken. I also am a fan of their curry sauce here which you get a HUGE cup of to go with your food and it is lovely, proper chip shop curry sauce. Mmm... Alongside the usual chip shop foodage they also sell pizzas (I am yet to try these) and their own version of KFC/Southern fried chicken ~ it always smells lovely but if I am in the mood for chicken I can't see past their roast chicken. My "Scottish Cousin"- not really a blood cousin, but a really good friend, told me to try a sausage and potato scone. WTH? Ok, is it a sausage roll and a potato scone? Two different things? No, he said it was two ingredients in one item. I asked the folks at the Cafe and they looked just as perplexed as I was. Ok, whatever, the line started getting long with hungry football fans and I started to panic. "Uh, chips and cheese please". The gentleman behind the counter asks me if I want salt and vinegar on it. Hmmm...never had that combo on cheese fries. So, yes to the vinegar and I forgo the salt. Best. Cheese. Fries. Ever. (Sorry, Cheese Chips) ;-) OMG. Is it the fresh thick-cut potatoes? Or the vinegar doused on the fries fresh out of the fryer? Or the freshly grated cheddar cheese??? I am now cheese fry ruined. :sigh:

Having exploded in number since then, Nando's is now popular and seems to be a current "in" thing to the extent that tedious people are leaving comments such as "NANDO'S! YUUUUMMMEEE!" on networking sites, between the comments about how much they love their iPhone and/or X Factor. Anyway, despite now being ubiqutous, Nando's is still fantastic, even if it does sometimes feel like a fast food joint with restaurant prices. It feels a bit scabby to go up to the counter to pay rather than have table service, but when you see your chicken carcass blackening away in the open plan kitchen, before arriving drenched in the hottest sauce they've got, you won't care. It's phenomenal, and a side of paprika fries won't do any harm either. Not a venue for a romantic date, but as a place to gorge it's unbeatable.

I have mixed feelings over this Nando's. I remember when it arrived years ago and was the first Nandos in Glasgow. I had been first introduced to Nando's years before when I was down in London and we were told we just had to try and I really enjoyed it. I used to go here quite a lot with my former work friends for a girly night after work. As we usually went in the evening we always found we were in the minority of caucasian folks and I always wondered why. We found out that this Nando's caters for Muslims so therefore the meat is Halal. Ahhh, all explained! It was always very very busy too but we could always get a seat no problem. As of late I have been going with work folks for lunch, with a less busy, noisy atmosphere. If you haven't been before, you are seated with a menu, check the number of your table and then head up the tills, a bit like a posh McDonalds. Give them your number then order what dish you would like. The restaurant is chicken based but does have beef and veggie dishes on there too. I tend to order a single ckicken breast fillet either in a pitta or wrap with extra cheese and pineapple. I unfortunately cannae handle the heat of the spice so tend to stay with the lemon and herb or mango and lime. You can also have 1 or 2 sides like chips, coleslaw, spicy rice or corn on the cob etc. I do also love to get a cheeky wee order of grilled halloumi cheese. Yuuuuuuum! I have found that they don't always have it when I go in, so I get very excited if they have it, as it's super delicious. Since I have been going back to this branch I have always found something wrong, maybe I'm nitpicking but there's never any forks and you have to wait to get some, staff are a bit slow, in the sense we had to wait a while to get a seat on my last visit, there was loads of staff behind the counter but none of the shop floor. I think they do quite a lot of take away orders at lunch time. Not sure how it works but they were getting a few phone calls while I was up ordering my meal. Och, also the ice machine was broken. Meh! I do like the ickle crushed up ice. Apart from the niggles I do like Nando's. I also have a Nando's Card which is only available in Scotland. You collect your chillies online, through your registered card and then you can get free food. It's a bit better than the loyalty stamp card they used to have as you could only redeem for a 1/2 or full chicken, now you can redeem for appeteasers, wraps, pittas and burgers and also the 1/2 and full chicken. It's the same Nando's decor but I do like it. If you've not been I would advise you go and try. It's much much better than a KFC and not too expensive. Can't wait to start redeeming my chillies to get my free food.
