This small new Woolies has taken over the old CommBank site, filling it with aisles of snacks, convenience foods and ready-to-eat goods. I don't think I've seen anything like it - not as big or well stocked as a supermarket, not as exxy and poorly stocked as a convenience store, it's perfect for busy workers rushing to or from work and in need of a grab-and-go meal. There's even a cafe onsite selling the cheapest coffee and cakes in Surry - $3 brownies, say whaaaaat? I'm yet to try the coffee here yet but boy has it been handy when I've been running to/from Central and needed to pick up a bag of washed spinach, a tub of yoghurt, a pack of bikkies or a bit of fresh fruit. It opens til late, heck it may even be open 24/7* - say whaaaaat? *don't quote me on that #wishfulthinking, but I'll check next time I swing by

Many a time you'll find yourself walking through Central Station and you need something like a…read morebottle of water or a packet of gum, something simple yet something so important to survival. It's New Years Eve, or is it New Years Day? The sun is up but there's been no transitional sleep to leave one day and enter the next, so the official date is sketchy. I find myself at Railway Square with a friend and cohort and we're waiting for a bus to get home, to get back to a soft comfortable boiling hot bed. (The heat is there due to the fierce power of the sun and nothing to do with passion or burning loins.) I enter Railway Square Central Grocer as it is the only place still open that sells what I need, water for hydration and gum to remove the horrid taste of cigarettes from my mouth. I don't smoke, but the taste is lingering. The bright fluorescent lights look like a beacon of hope that pulls us in from the bus stop and over to the pedestrian mall that leads to the tunnel. The ominous central station tunnel, a buskers delight is a hearing persons torment. I buy the gum and the water at the expected expensive price and enjoy the cool H2O on my partied out tongue, the flavoursome mint between my over tired teeth and the cool night air that I know will soon turn into a hot bed of flames and passion.

Railway Square - Central Grocer is located, as shocked as you might be after reading its name, at Central train station near Railway Square. It has all your typical convenience store items, with an infusion of American imports. For instance, they have the Cookie Dough candy range, inclusive of cupcake bites and brownie bites. And in case your teeth haven't fallen out after all that, I even sourced some Mike and Ikes and Reeses Pieces from these golden shelves. My one gripe- I was delighted to lay eyes on a Diet Dr Pepper in a can, which I haven't seen in a million years. I brought it up to the counter with triumph and delight only to find out that the bloody thing was $4.50?! GRRRaaaaahhhhhh!! I asked the poor young worker, "Why, WHY, is this so expensive??" and he looked at me with a side-cocked head and sarcastic expression and said "Lady, it's American." It took about everything inside of me not to retort "Well so am I, and I'm not charging you $4.50 to have this conversation!!" But I thought better of it, put the can back , and left with the piece of mind that if ever I was having a serious Dr Pepper meltdown (which clearly would be serious), I now knew where to find one.
