We have been told to use Avis for years…read more The first time I used them, I found that it's a little confusing when you get to the airport and they just tell you to go pick a car - any car. Wait... really? But I have so many questions!: **Are they all the same price? **Really? Any car? ** Very odd... but kind of cool. Now that I have done a few, I find it really refreshing to pick my car and not be at the mercy of a jaundiced counter person. (not that Avis was really that bad) So far I find the prices very competitive and they have a good selection of cars. I will have to see how it all works out if there is ever any trouble. The last rental I did out of Edmonton, I returned the car during a bit of a snow storm and the car was mildly covered in snow and a bit of mud, the receiving lot guy came right out and stated, we will have to wash the car and if there is damage, we will be adjusting the price. I was taken back a bit by his way of stating that, whoa! I'm sorry but there is no damage! Do you see damage? He says, it's not my job to look for it, but if we find any, we will bill you. So I ran around the car and took multiple shots of every angle with him watching, just incase the guy driving it back to the staging area scrapes it up in the snow on the way and then blames me. I just thought it seemed really odd to be suspect and accused like that. I would likely give 5 stars on this rental, but for this guy and his statement. And it's been a week almost and no mention of any damage... go figure!

I noticed a large dent and chips on the exterior, took timestamped photos, and emailed the branch right away to document everything. When I came back that morning to swap to the size I originally booked, I was discouraged from doing so. When I insisted, they said I'd be charged for the dent. They only backed off after I showed my timestamped photos. I wasn't charged in the end, but only because I had my own proof. Take photos and videos of every angle at pickup. Don't rely on them to document it for you. If something similar happens to you, know that Alberta has consumer protection options available.

We took video to be safe, and thank goodness we did. They sent the damage to the claims department as new damage, despite the above. Even the vehicle conditions slip indicates a C for what we assume is the cracked windshield. The unit had lots of damage/scratches to all sides of the vehicle. After calling this location over and over throughout different times of the day, someone finally answered. They were too busy to answer their phones apparently. Horrible service. The guy, who claimed to be the manager finally called me back and said that I'd need to deal with the claims department. He took no responsibility for his team's error. He was really quite dismissive and overall useless. I have my doubts that he was even the manager. I have the vehicle slip and video with time stamp, so thankfully am confident that this will get resolved, but this experience at Thrifty has been horrible. I can't imagine if I didn't take the video. I at least expected the manager to review the video and slip and attempt to resolve, instead of claiming no responsibility for their negligence. I feel like this location is trying to scam me for previous damage. Lots of Google reviews claiming similar stories. Beware if you are renting from the Thrifty at the Edmonton airport. I rent dozens of vehicles each year for personal and work and have never experienced this kind of scamming behaviour. Typically the manager would look into the issues and address. I called customer service and tried repeatedly to telephone the Edmonton Alamo number (no one answered the phone, ever!) I was told by customer service (from somewhere, I know not) they couldn't find the glasses but on my third visit to the site I was told someone from Edmonton would call me. Never happened. Those are expensive prescription sunglasses of use to no one else. And, I know, ABSOLUTELY, they were left in the vehicle. Somehow they have gone missing. An otherwise excellent vehicle rental through Alamo has been tarnished by this experience.

If you're unlucky enough to return your rental here like we were, you might encounter someone like John, who will search your returned car at a microscopic level for "damages". John happened to find an inconspicuous rear bumper dent on our car that was suspiciously 1/2 inch (~1.2 cm) over the 2 inch limit and refused to give us the benefit of the doubt that we hadn't caused the dent (we hadn't). I understand that it's the customer's job to inspect the car prior to accepting it, which we did, but this rental outfit will go out of their way to make you pay for things you likely would've missed. John was even frustrated we returned the car with ice on the front license plate, because he couldn't inspect *it* for damages (it was late November in Edmonton). Though he told us he'd talk to his manager about our 2.5" dent, John instead just told his manager to "pursue the customer." We then heard from the Assistant Branch Manager, Justinea, who did just that...instructed us that we must file a claim with our insurance company. Frustrating. Dishonest. Unwilling to trust the customer at any level. Do NOT do business with this Alamo.

I said i had reserved a small truck and when i confirmed my reservation it said vehicle was available. He said they don't generally have any. The truck they provided was a nice truck however it was equipped with a V8 and the truck i had reserved would of had a 4 cylinder, which affected the amount of fuel i had to pay for . While returning the truck i was asked how i liked my rental, to which i said other then being a bigger vehicle then i reserved it was ok. It would of been nice to of been offered come compensation for being given a larger vehicle. Only other down side was the truck was not equipped with snow tires, being winter, luckily i didnt not have any issues

When I knocked on the door a lady came and said very rudely, we are closed, I said my son just fell can we at least come in and warm up. She was still short and rude and when I asked about an airport shuttle she told me we needed to walk to the hotel, which was two hotels over, in the cold with all our luggage to catch a shuttle. I asked if I could call for the shuttle to come get us and even after my son falling, the temp outside and I was clearly not happy she said, we aren't supposed to, still with the same rude tone. While this was happening another employee came in, a man, didn't offer any help to us at all and proceeded to start the car we had just returned to check it back in. No offer of a ride or help with luggage or anything. When picking up my rental no one mentioned to me that they would not be open at 9 am and that the shuttle would be at a nearby hotel, had they mentioned this I would have allowed time for this and would have been prepared. But instead this was all a surprise and staff was rude and unhelpful.

I drove the hour and some to get there and when I pulled on the door the door was locked. an employee was in their vehicle leaving and asked if I needed help. I told them that I had a rental booked and I mentioned when booking I was going to be late. they said there is nothing they can do and told me to come back Monday and then the employee left. As we were sitting in our vehicle trying to call to see what we can do we seen another employee pull in and go in the bay door but would not open the door so we can talk to them. I don't understand how you can book a vehicle, say that you will be a bit late and be assured that it's fine but when you get there its all locked up. we ended up getting a rental from the airport but there was no mention of this location from the employee which would have been helpful as well. nope they just wanted to go home for the Easter Long Weekend. very disappointed and would not recommend this location to ANYONE!!

Upon arrival in YEG, the rental location was called and a vehicle was sent to fetch us from the airport to take us to the rental location. Once we arrived, the driver of the vehicle proceeded to go behind the counter and proceeded to act as the rental agent. The location was tucked in the back part of a disheveled gas-station, almost un-recognizable. The rental vehicle were haphazardly parked on a gravel parking lot nearby. On our reservation we selected 12:00pm for the arrival time, but as everyone knows, flights are unpredictable and after waiting to be picked up, we got to the location about 1:05pm. The attendant pulled up our reservation number and told us that THEY WERE OUT OF CARS, and that it was our fault that we are late and that it didn't matter that we had a reservation, they were simply OUT OF CARS. After a fierce debate (also there was a gentlemen behind us who was also about to be told the same information) we were given a "complimentary upgrade" to a mini van. Had a wanted to rent this instead of a sedan, I would have, but this was the only option given to us. Mini van, or no vehicle at all. Fast forward to returning the vehicle. We had an early flight, so we had to drop off our vehicle at 5am. We were told "Just park the car and give your keys to the gas station attendant." This seemed very odd, but we did as we were told, and then had to wait OUTSIDE in the rain whilst a shuttle came to take us to the airport. The shuttle driver drove like a crazy person but we eventually made it to the airport. NEVER EVER EVER RENT from this specific branch of Routes.

I sent a message through the "live chat" option and nobody has responded to me up to this point, 24 hours later. I also called them after sending the message, and I was put on hold for 45 mins only to find out that the company does not provide a GPS and carseat at the Edmonton airport location. I should have cancelled my reservation then but no. I decided to give them another call today to make sure that I was not misinformed by the person I spoke to yesterday because it seemed odd to me for a rental car company not to offer GPS at least. I was on hold again for a good 40 mins then of course my call got dropped by them since the person I was calling was "unavailable." I finally cancelled my reservation through expedia and booked a car with Enterprise instead.

Thanks to Logan for the shuttle to the airport the other night, and to the front desk staff for helping me on the phone. The location is in Leduc, so you will have to factor in additional time to shuttle to and from the airport, but if you plan ahead it's fine. When you do an after hours drop off, you do have to walk over to a nearby hotel to catch a shuttle, but again, if you factor in the additional time, it will work out. The rates are fantastic. If you can factor in the buffer time for the shuttle, this is a great value for a car rental
