This is a great dojo! It is self paced and you can learn what arts you find most interesting. However, many of the techniques flow into other arts (Karate, Jujitsu, and weapons training). I like the way the Sensei teaches the class. You get a traditional Karate base and he explains real world situations/applications. It is also a great cardio workout! This is an amazing Martial Arts School. It's no black belt sales operation. It's the real deal. You get the perfect blend of old school Japanese Martial Arts but with a modern perspective and approach taught by a great guy. If you are just starting out, a novice looking to get back into it, or an expert in one (or more) arts, you will instantly enjoy working Jones Sensei. He's a excellent teacher and martial artist. He is also incredibly humble and laid back. His knowledge is vast. His skill set is fantastic and it becomes self evident very quickly. The best way I can put it is draw off an animal analogy, in that he truly personifies the balance, gracefulness, and ferocity of a tiger. He is very eager to jump in the fray and enthusiastically uke (be the test dummy for strikes and throws) for the students. He's also there every night we train. There are many wonderful teachers out there but what sets the Budokan apart is the brand of Aiki studied here. It is not traditional Aikido. It's more traditional, technically, and much harsher. Similar concepts and techniques, just not the mercy of Ueshiba. Anyone who frowns on traditional Aikido over Jujitsu would really enjoy Jones Sensei's approach. Jones Sensei also does a great job blending the hard Karate with the soft Aiki and showing how the compliment each other. This school is next level stuff. I have been training with Sensei Jones since 2001. Sensei Jones has a way of teaching traditional martial arts in a way that makes it effective for today. As a yellow belt I have visited other dojos that people have invited me to and left there with their Sensei respect that I could move, block/punch, throw and break fall so well compared to their students who were ranked at a high belt then i was. This solidified that the training that I received from Sensei Jones was top notch.
