Not only does Salt Lake Mission provide food, clothing, and shelter to the homeless, they also offer residential rehabilitation for those who are struggling. Celebrating 30 years in 2023, Salt Lake Mission is a non-profit church-based ministry to help our community transition out of poverty. They provide crisis intervention, counseling, and help folks with job placement. This year, they are holding the 8th annual "Mardi Bra" on March 8 to honor International Women's Day. They have been collecting feminine hygiene products, clothes, and toiletries for distribution to those in need. The store is setup more like a boutique than a thrift store, which makes the experience feel a little nicer than just bargain hunting. Whomever is in charge of dressing the mannequins and putting out the displays does a fantastic job-it really sets the tone of the store and looks incredible! The inventory might be a little less than some of the other second hand stores in the game, but I think they might cater to an older, more classy audience than folks who want to look like they buy their clothes at a thrift store. (Nothing wrong with either group!) Based on the clientele I saw here, this is the perfect place to bring your mom or grandma or to get a lovely dress for a tea party with a matching hat. The sign had this super cheesy curly letter design and I just knew it was the real deal. The market was mostly Navajo jewelry and from what I could tell it was all very reasonably priced and high quality. There were a couple of vendors selling food too! We bought a breaksfast burrito and a corn cake. It was all delicious. We're pretty sure the tortilla in the breakfast burrito was handmade and the woman selling the corn cake, told us all about the significance of corn cakes in the Navajo culture. What an immersive experience! I heard that they are talking about doing these markets once a month. I hope they do this again! And I hope they expand the food vendors. We bought a couple of pieces of jewelry. I usually prefer buying ethnic jewelry or clothing directly from the person who identifies as part of that culture. Usually you will see better pricing and you are less likely to get ripped off. They can also explain the cultural significance so you know you won't be offending someone by accidentally buying something with a serious religious significance. I am very happy with what we got! What a wonderful thing to stumble upon today. I hope this wasn't the last time!
