I went to Buffalo Bar on the spur of the moment, with four of my housemates. We were all sitting around, struggling with the idea that a long evening of bad television stretched before us but unsure what to do instead. Suddenly, one of them said 'Well, we could go to Buffalo. It's free before 11!" And on that great recommendation did we embark. Actually, it was a really good night. The downstairs bar was compeltely rammed with people having a drink after work and I felt quite out of place. However, that's not to say that there was any hostile atmosphere against the small number of students there (as can sometimes be the case). Going upstairs, we found that there was a DJ playing - a mix of the best of old-school and more modern indie music. The drinks were a little dear for my poor old purse but I wasn't drinking alcohol so I wasn't hit too hard by it! With refreshing Pimms served up on some days in the summer, and mulled wine in the winter, they often offer something special to fit the season or the weather. The décor is stylish but comfortable, with a retro/vintage feel and hanging chandeliers, and you can see why it attracts an arty kind of a crowd. As this bar is in a former house, there's a great 'secret' beer garden out the back for when it's sunny or warm - and there's an upstairs where bands play. Buffalo bar has one word that surrounds it. That word is cool! This bar is an excellent place to hang out with some friends, buy some drinks and enjoy the alternative music they play. As well as being a bar, Buffalo has a function room upstairs that occasionally has music gigs or movie nights. I have always liked Buffalo bar mainly because of the atmosphere you feel once you enter its doors. It seems like a cool place to hang out and have a drink. It is a friendly and welcoming bar that offers a range of food and drinks. It even has deals for 2 meals for £10 at lunchtime. I did find it to be a little expensive when it came to drinks. My advice would be to go on payday and spend all day there because it is that easy to. As I mentioned before it has a function room upstairs with a full bar. This can be used for anything. I remember it being the venue for our staffs Christmas party and it was excellent. Even the price to book the room was £40, which was incredible. It was a night well spent and I would thoroughly recommend it for group bookings. Buffalo bar is a relaxing and fun bar to be in. Every now and then my events page on Facebook spews out a gem courtesy of Buffalo Bar. This usually coincides with me taking a sharp intake of breath and then holding it in whilst I consider whether I really need to see off a considerable amount of money on cocktails in order to see a band that may be playing elsewhere in Cardiff within a month. Thankfully, Buffalo Bar rarely send an invite to a gig that I get too excited about, and so these expensive outings are rare, however pleasant. I really don't want to be too critical of any establishment in Cardiff that is good enough to be a purveyor of live music, (there really are far too few of them already, and I'm not about to deliver a nail to a live music venues coffin here on the interweb). Besides, sometimes the price tag is justified. Ohhh, I can feel the excitement rising already... Buffalo Bar have sent me an invite to The Go! Team in the last couple of days, and the mere thought of seeing these music video geniuses is making me, well, how should i put it? A bit bloody excited! The gig will be at the Millennium Music Hall, and not Buffalo Bar itself. Tickets are £12.00, and I only have to get the whole way through winter before I get to see them... yes, that's right, the date of the gig is Sunday 27th February! Despite the fact that I have lived in the UK for over six years I hardly ever ventured outside of London. You can then imagine that when I finally decided to go for a weekend trip to Cardiff I was terrified of the alien world out there without the tube, rude Londoners and heaps of night out venues. I think my opinion about Cardiff night life would be completely different, hadn't I been to the Buffalo Bar. And I have been there twice during that weekend! Although I have put it on my TO DO list, I didn't feel like going as I was put off by the name. For some reason I have imagined it to be this boring, sticky place with pool tables only selling beer...Not sure where that image came from but I wasn't keen on going and only went there by chance. It doesn't look like your regular bar either. In fact, you could easily mistake it for one of the terraced houses on that street. And because it's in actual house you get the benefit of two spacious floors, basement loos and huge beer garden. Immediately as you walk in, you get the sense that you have just entered someone's large and funky living room. Massive sofas, armchairs and little coffee tables cluttered together inviting anyone to sit down. Honestly well arranged with many cool props, paintings, photos and side lamps everywhere. When you then go upstairs, you get more cool and club-like version of the ground floor, with a stage and a DJ booth. From what I can recall the room upstairs was painted red, there was some random photographic art on the ceiling - yes the ceiling and the most prominent spot in the room was given to giant, red, neon F**K sign. And if that is not enough of an encouragement, then I can assure you that the music will not let you down as it varies from utter cheese to hard rock. This place is anything but ordinary. Got to go outside to smoke? Don't wear heels to this place. Whether intentionally or not, Buffalo have implemented a feature that deters all glamorously tottering ladies from lighting up. It's an advanced technique that rivals the Electric Cigarette and Nicorette. It's called decking. Other than that, this is an incredibly well-thought out bar. The designer must be credited for absolutely going to town with quirky collections. The lampshades here are certainly odd, but add a certain playful feel to the place. Add to that an intriguing collection of mirrors, boxes and typewriters and you have decorations which will never let you run out of conversation. Buffalo is just the right size to come across as cosy and exclusive, without becoming claustrophobic. If you want to sit down though, make sure you don't get in too late. Generally held in high regard within both the University and Media lot, Buffalos is kind of an upmarket bar with plenty of things held with it's 2 floors. Upmarket means two things here, the beautiful, brightly lit marbled décor with comfy couches littering the floor and a pretty decent Garden (if the weather is ever kind enough to be respectable). Upstairs is more of a gig venue and hosts DJ sets, comedy night, bands etc. The other is that it's pricey in here. Your looking £3+ for whatever beer/cider/wine etc you like. Food is more reasonable however and really enjoyed the chilli I had in there before, really tasty and better than some restaurants that I've paid a lot more for the same. Check out the website to see if there's anything upcoming that you fancy. As far as looking for something other than you rlocal chain I would recommend you visit Buffalos. Ah, Buffalos. Good times. I did not go to university in Cardiff (dun dun duuuuun), so ending up missing out on most of those studenty things that a lot of my friends did. So I didn't really get a taster of Buffalo until late on, to my shame and derivation. You are a strange little one, Buffalo, with your crowded bars and long list of cocktails that take 20 minutes to make. Each. If it's busy, maybe stick to bottles right out of the fridge. The decoration is great, so you don't feel odd if you happen to be the only one in there (unlikely). My overriding memory of Buffalos will always be the tadpole wall though. Many drunken minutes staring at it, trying to put all the stages in order. This is a great bar in the centre of town for those, like me, who value conversation, atmosphere and tasty drinks over getting slaughtered. With it's fairly low-key exterior - at a glance not dissimilar to the other terraced houses it accompanies - it isn't hard to miss Buffalo sitting almost opposite the Central Bar on Windsor Place. A plush interior, with large, comfortable sofas and a well-stocked bar with a wide range of cocktails, Buffalo is a favourite of the more "arty" clientele of Cardiff. And it's not hard to see why. On most nights there's a DJ downstairs playing anything from Techno, Drum and Bass, Hip-Hop or Rock depending on which night you attend. There is also an upstairs area with it's own bar which is mainly used for various events and themed nights. They have tailored their events schedule extremely well, with something for everyone and you can expect anything from live bands to video-games competitions to cinema nights throughout the week. If there's nothing on on your particularly night of choice though, there's always a selection of board games downstairs to keep you occupied! Buffalo Bar has a large, partially covered beer garden, which is - when not jam-packed of course - an extremely chilled out place to relax, chat and enjoy the atmosphere. There are several large tables with bench seats and also a small standing area if, as is often the case on the busier nights, seating is hard to come by. Weather-permitting, for certain events during the year this is converted into one large dancefloor with DJs outside playing various styles of music. I, myself had one of the best New Year's Eves in recent memory here just last year. One criticism regularly aimed at Buffalo would be the pricey drinks and slow service at the bar. Generally, between Sunday and Thursday I have never had problems with service but on the busier, more overcrowded nights it can take up to 20 minutes to get to the front of the queue. The bar is sometimes a little understaffed and a special warning if you order a cocktail as these too can take a little while! I've also found that the quality of the cocktail can vary depending on who is serving. Prices are indeed slightly higher with most drinks, as you can expect from a slightly more upmarket bar such as this one and a full night out here can be an expensive one. Personally though, I'd rather pay 20-30p more per pint and enjoy a great atmosphere than to save the money and skimp on the experience. They have a great cocktail menu, with many being 2 for 1. My wallet has been extremely grateful for this over the last few months. A recommendation of mine (unfortunately not included in the 2 for 1 deal) would be the Toasty Buffalo, which at £6.50 for a small glass isn't cheap but it certainly serves as the perfect last drink of the night. I have never found the bar staff here to be especially rude or ignorant if you strike up a conversation with them and most who work there seem pleasant enough on the whole. To summarise then, Buffalo Bar is one of those increasingly rare venues in Cardiff which manages to offer a wide range of events, retain a certain level of chic and exclusivity and provide a chilled out, friendly atmosphere with one of the best beer gardens in the whole city. Despite all this though, it's main clientele is Buffalo's strongest point, with a friendly, more mature attitude prevalent over the binge drinking culture present in many of Cardiff's other bars. The first time I went to Buffalo Bar it was my friend's birthday and I wasn't particularly blown away. There are some who think Buffalo Bar is the best thing since sliced bread and like some of the other reviews have said it held it pretty high regard around Cardiff as student and professional alike will frequent this upmarket cocktail bar quite regularly. The first time I went there it was jammed packed and for some reason I remember thinking it looked like a dentist's surgery from the outside. I waited ages for a drink and nearly choked when I heard the prices but then as a trendy bar they can afford to do that and I don't think anyone goes to Buffalo Bar for a cheap night. My friend who plays solo acoustic music has played there a few times and I'm aware they cater for all different types of music depending on which night which usually takes place upstairs. My friend sounded great and quite surprisingly a pretty good gig venue. All in all I think Buffalo is one those places you make up your made immediately whether you like it or not needless to say I don't go there too often but it's a nice place to have on the list when going for a night out. read more

This is a joint that you definitely need a bit of money to go to. Filled with the suave professionals of Cardiff, you can catch the odd student here also as they put on many a gig. It is a pretty sexy looking bar with candlelit tables and a delightful outdoor seating area lit up with fairy lights. I remember staying on at this bar a number of times until the early hours as there are not a lot of quiet places you can go into the depths of the night. Luckily by the time its late, you really don't want to be drinking too much anyway and is a nice place to end the night on a relaxing note. Buffalo Bar in Cardiff is one of those inevitabilities on a night out. As a chilled bar, with retro stylings and a late license, it seems THE place to go when the other bars chuck you out and you fancy one last drink. The bar has three main areas. Theres the main bar, which is long and thin with two main seating areas and a long bar. Expensive and a bit of a wait, but they do a good late night hot chocolate. There is an upstairs music venue with a smaller bar and less of a wait, and a partially covered comfortable outer seating area with its own small bar. The upstairs music venue is a bit of a peculiar one. When you enter the room it looks like the area in front of the stage is too small and I tend to gravitate to the back or the bar. However, it is deceiving so head up front and enjoy the music. However, look out if you wear heels! There is a booby trap if you try and go out the back - the metal grid at the top of the steps gives hours of entertainment! read more

Buffalo Bar is one of those bars you can regularly find yourself in on a night out, despite not being sure why you're even there. It's expensive, it's situated up a largely quiet side street and, all in all, it's a bit out of the way from my normal route of St Mary's Street bar crawling. On the plus side, there are regular bands and live music at the venue. Add to this a buy-one-get-one-free offer on cocktails and you should have yourself a great bar. But despite all these reasons why I should love this place, I normally leave feeling largely unimpressed. The variety of music on offer is a definite positive and the extensive cocktail list is always a bonus, but the price tag that comes with a bar that prides itself on its exclusivity and upmarket image is enough to leave the average punter choking on his overly expensive pint. The only way of having a cheap night out at Buffalo is if you sneak in undetected and thereafter drink only tap water; neither of which would be looked upon too kindly. Despite this fact, Buffalo always seems to have a good crowd of people filling up both floors and the atmosphere is surprisingly good, compared with most upmarket bars. The last time I went there, I met James Corden from Gavin and Stacey, which further demonstrates the bar's reputation as an exclusive, up market venue. If you can afford to spend a lot on drinks, this is a good venue to buy them for a more unreasonable price than most bars, but at least you get a great atmosphere included in that price. read more

Apart from these factors, Buffalo has the potential to score top points here, so its definitely worth a visit. Buffalo Bar is a great alternative to some of the pubs in the centre of Cardiff that are just Wetherspoons and little else. The downstairs area is a relaxing place to grab a drink and sit about in, and the upstairs area is opened up when there are gigs going on, and that's a lot of the time nowadays as it grows in popularity in terms of giggery. It tends to be smaller bands that play this venue, so tickets tend to be relatively cheap, and you can often stumble on a little gem to brag about the next day as if you were a member of the band or something. The drinks prices aren't that cheap, but it's the atmosphere and environment that you're paying for, and somewhere different to spend an evening in Cardiff. read more

Providing a refreshing alternative to many of the generic and uninspiring venues which formulate Cardiff's mainstream night life, Buffalo is a classier, more sophisticated venue which attracts a more mild mannered clientele than you're likely to encounter at jaunts like Oceana, Liquid or Walkabout. With some of its regulars perhaps bordering on pretentious, the high prices charged for both the entry fee and for most drinks are enough to put some off coming here. Trendily furnished, this has a cool and sleek atmosphere which makes it quite unique. Operating on two floors, the upstairs area does have a bar, but is devoted more so to providing a place to dance. Sometimes gigs are held here, with the upstairs area a perfectly sufficient space to host small concerts. It's a nice place to come, although expect to pay higher prices than in most other places across Cardiff. read more

There are lots of events I like attending at Buffalo such as gigs, classic B-Movie screenings and garden parties (the 'secret garden' is definately not your run-of-the-mill beer garden, it's a wonderful breathing place in the heart of the city). For the best atmosphere I would suggest going with lots of people if you haven't been there before, rather than for a cosy dinner (although the food is pretty fantastic). The decor is superb with its boudoir inspired retro chic. But for more of a positive atmosphere I think the staff need to invest something more of themselves as they should be as characterful as their surroundings. But instead I always feel that they are a bit too frosty! I don't dislike Buffalo in fact I wished I loved it. But it seems to have a knack of making people feel alienated for not being cool or hip enough. read more

I used to go there quite often in the past but the fact that it turned from a very nice bar where you could be with your mates relaxing to one that is usually full to the guts, people have to bump against each other to get somewhere and it still take a long time to get served really got me down. Don't take me wrong cos the space is very nice (the loos could be improved a LOT but everything else is nice), all decorated in a cabaret style with a nice lounge on the end of the bar with games you can play and big sofas to stretch on. They have a second floor that is used for gigs and an outdoor space that is very good on those mid warm nights to chill out and have a nice conversation. The prices there are a bit expensive but they are priced at the same rate as any other bar of this calibre in Cardiff, so I don't see any negative point on there. They are expensive but so are the other bars. Buffalo offers theme nights, every night along the week is a different night to cater for different tastes, they have Hip Hop, Drum and Bass, Techno and even Cinema nights. The busiest days are Fridays and Saturdays (obviously) and you will have to pay to get in (the price depends of what is on, for mroe info check their myspace). All in all it is a very good alternative for Lloyds or any of other run of the mill pub/bar. read more

Urgh worst customer service experience EVER in this bar. One of their main draws is supposed to be their cocktails - yet none of the staff seem to have a clue how to pour a beer let alone mix a cocktail. I was given a drink that tasted nothing like it's supposed to - when I queried this I was given a heap of attitude and told that's how it was supposed to taste - which given that I've been drinking this drink for over ten years I find hard to believe. Seating area was dirty and slippery and atmosphere totally unfriendly. This used to be my favourite bar in Cardiff Buffalo is a stylish bar built inside an end of terrace town house right in the centre of town. The whole bar is centred around music with many local bands and DJs performing at the venue, and in the summer months in the spacious beer garden. The cocktails are generally overpriced for what they are. Most drinks on the menu can be found in any cocktail book therefore they lack originality. The range of beers and spirits stocked is extensive but yet again rather expensive. This bar used to great, but since opening 3 years ago the Cardiff bar scene has changed with better, cheaper more original bars sprouting up all the time. However don't let this put you off Buffalo is still a good bar that needs to be experienced, if you're only going to drink one drink try the Espresso Martini. read more

Buffalo is a great place to start or end an evening out in Cardiff. The drinks are pricey compared to somewhere like Wetherspoons but then you are paying for the atmosphere, the music, the style and the company! Beautiful decor, this is how you'd want your living room to look if you had the money (or at least I would!) vinatage flock wallpaper, retro chairs with amazing sofa's for lounging and some really cool chandeliers and brilliant lighting. The outside area is fantastic and is really decked out whenever there is a Secret Garden party or other interesting night on here. I've been to outdoor film screenings here too which were fantastic with popcorn sellers and a brilliant atmosphere. I love going here to relax and chat with friends!! The bar is so chillaxed and there is a great range of drinks to suit all tastes. There is a super cocktails menu and at Christmas time you go in and there's an amasing aroma of mulled wine which you can get @ the bar!! AMASING! This summer I went in and ordered a Pims with as much fruit as they could muster. I had a lovely drink and it was filled with Strawberries and Rasberries, not forgetting the mint!! I work for a law firm and I have even been known to take client's there once or twice for lunch. The food is fresh and service is quich. You can get all kinds of things like steak in cibatta breach with salad to mexican tatties! The design is retro classis with a splash of bohemian which makes a homely fees witout you getting too comffy and fallnig alseep!!! In the evening there is also live music. This is a place that knows it's cool and it shows. Some of the decor looks a little try-to-hard but overall, it's actually quite interesting, and the large smoking area is great. The cocktails, though pricey, are delicious and generally very well made. What lets this place down is the service. Cocktail bars are normally a little slower to serve than regular bars, which is understandable, but the bartenders here don't seem to know how to prioritise their time, and regulars seem to get served faster than everyone else regardless of who's been waiting longest. People down the end of the bar get forgotten about a lot too. The other issue is that 241 deals are poorly explained on the fliers, and they don't post their minimum card spend limit clearly either. Cardiff has a lot of cocktail bars to choose from and this place is probably a good choice if it's not the weekend and you want Camden style cool. But if it's the weekend, or you feel a little out of place surrounded by hipsters, maybe give it a miss. It should also be noted that this place isn't exactly wheelchair accessible either. read more

The last time I went here roughly 3 years ago, I was a student. I was really disappointed in the place, because although it looked really cool and trendy from the outside, I felt like I was being ignored! We weren't asked if we wanted any help despite standing at the bar for a long time. During this time one of the owners, or perhaps staff, actually got served before us. When we finally got served, the creamy chicken penne pasta dish we ordered didn't actaully have any chicken in! The interior is unique and on-trend- quite like the cocktails, of which there is a vast array. They aren't cheap, around £7/8 range, but so worth it- and before 10pm it's 2 for 1! Love Buffalo, absolutely adore it. For some reason it's always filled with really attractive people though that could be the £2 bottles of Stella talking. Between the hours of 7-10 you can fill up on on BOGOF cocktails before heading into town to dance your face off, or you could equally stay and enjoy live music or local DJ's. There are plenty of great events including album release parties and live bands. Serving all different kinds of food you can really enjoy a relaxing lunch and drift off to the relaxing easy music. I remember during my first trip to Buffalo looking around and having a near religious experience. Here, finally, was my kind of place. Excellent drinks selection, cracking tunes, funky decor, and an atmosphere that was utterly chilled and welcoming. I sat outside in the sunshine with a beer and an extremely tasty burger, and thought: 'I am going to live here from now on.' Fastforward to later that evening and it all started to go hideously wrong. Maybe it was naive of me not to anticipate that a gem like Buffalo would get very very busy on a Friday night, but it really did get so uncomfortably rammed as to render almost all of the many good things null and void. Generally speaking, a night out in a bar consists of the various activities which make up 'having fun', interspersed with two less fun, but necessary activities - purchasing drinks, and using the bathroom. Unfortunately, in a busy Buffalo, both of these can be truly traumatic. Waiting half an hour for the overwhelmed bar staff to work their way through the hordes of cocktail ordering customers just to get a beer is soul-crushingly annoying, to the point that I found myself beginning to feel quite angry towards most of the other people there. As for the toilets, which are both insufficient and insufficiently maintained, suffice it to say that not once have I been to Buffalo in the evening and found them in a decent condition. Overall, then, a gem, but a deeply flawed one. As a place to relax in the daytime its unbeatable, but a night out on the weekend is more likely to have elements of a stressful nightmare. read more

my boyfriend was the first to take me hear. as soon as i walked in the atmosphere was lovely, music just right and really nice people and staff. grabbed a few seats, sat and looked at the drinks menu. cocktails are pricey but not over the top. baught about 3 and enjoyed every one a lot. didnt mind paying a bit more beacuse atmosphere was so nice, and very comfey chairs! beer garden is sinple, tidy and nice. pretty big too. Whent there on another occasion too after work about 4pm for a cuppa T and pint. My 22 year old boyfriend got ID'd for his drink, and oh how we laughed. but totally birlliant. well worth going! read more

While the bar formerly known as Mr Smith's remains under the same management, the differences under new moniker Buffalo Lounge go beyond a simple name change. Now more closely resembling its city centre sister bar Buffalo, the exciting yet cluttered old interior has been smoothed out. With cleaner lines and airier, calmer décor, there's something nearer a wine bar atmosphere now, though without the most offensive elements such a tag could mentally conjure. A few of the kitschy touches remain, however - the bar covered with old videotapes, for instance - and the menu/cocktails both carry over an American themed obsession. Cocktails are two-for-one from 3pm to 9pm, Monday to Friday, and food is served 12 hours a day, 10am to 10pm. So whether you're grabbing a spot of breakfast, constructing a monstrous burger from their extra-affordable added extras or downing some drinks preparing for a trip into town, Buffalo Lounge is a durable destination at the core of the student district. read more
