Okay... this review is long overdue... sort of like that library book I have from 2 years ago, but that's another story. Now, I visited this Buffalo Exchange back in 09, so things might be different now. HOWEVER, for those of you complaining about it being pretentious and snobby... that's what the deal of this store is (why there's one in Albuquerque is beyond me, but I digress) There is a lot of cool finds here and a very simple layout. I went in, have never been there before or sold there before. I made an appointment to sell some very high end clothes, very expensive and cute, lightly used. They turned down all of my items that were in great condition. I looked around and all of the clothes were not priced correctly and I was not impressed at all at their selection. Makes me wonder if the employees should be pricing these items. Very disappointed and upset with my experience. read more

I was surprised to see the low ratings for this usual local favorite but, than again, I'm not rating it much better. I love or rather CAN love Buffalo Exchange. Its a love-hate relationship really. The concept is great, the clothes can usually be hip or unusual--both are great! You never know what you will find! That said, I feel like the quality of the clothing selection has gone way down. I went to sell last week and they only bought two of my pieces because the "store was packed." Fair enough. But when I went to shop, I noticed that the store was packed with their new, store-brand clothing. Do not be deceived! You can tell what these pieces are by the yellow or blue tag and they are brand new. The pieces are tempting because they are on trend but do not be tricked! They are cheaply and poorly-made. I am disappointed in Buffalo for this need to go to mass-manufactured clothes when its the opposite of what a thrift, locally stalked store is supposed to stand for! Great selection of women's clothes, shoes and accessories BUT they can be bit more expensive than some other 2nd hand stores. Its funny because cheaper, no-name brands are priced higher than some more expensive brands (which is fine by me since I go for the cheaper priced, higher end brand anyway lol) I love coming in here when I'm in Nob Hill. I consider myself a bit of a Buffalo Exchange connoisseur. If I go to a new city, I have to go to their Buffalo Exchange. If they don't have a Buffalo Exchange, why even bother going? Do they even have a Target? On day two of a long overdue visit to my BFF, we HAD to go to the Buff. The weird thing about this store is that it's HUGE, but it has about the same amount of clothing as a store half its sized. Usually, Buffs are squishy and full of treasure, which I've grown used to. Imagine moving from a studio apartment to a 3-bedroom house, but you don't have any money to buy new furniture. It's like that. The amount of vintage clothing was acceptable, but it's okay because there are so many other places in the city to find vintage things. The brands were boring. Nobody goes to the Buff to buy junk from Forever 21 and American Eagle, so I don't know why they even try to sell it. The dressing rooms are unusually large, but one of the hooks was missing from the one I used, which was sad. Also, I didn't find anything I liked enough to buy. My boy-BFF did, though, so maybe it just wasn't my day. The staff was nice, but a little creepier than usual. One of the associates was obviously staring at my friend and I as we left the store. Trolling around second hand stores is a favorite pastime of mine, and I visit Buffalo Exchange on Central once every couple of weeks because it really is the best of its kind in town. Much of what is said below is true though: sizes are small, prices are at least five bucks more than they should be (especially shoes), and men's selection is weak. What's up Albuquerque? Although the selection is a little limited and certainly expensive at times, Buffalo Exchange saved my hash yesterday. They had a lot of great jewelry and a couple cute dresses (cheap), and a couple pairs of shoes (expensive)! Wish they opened before 11am on Sundays, but you can't have it all!! :) I was hoping for more variety in the ladies section, but the lady who helped me looked like Liza Minelli, so they get an extra star just for that. I always enjoy buying things from Buffalo Exchange, but I absolutely hate trading/selling to them. When I go in solely to buy clothes, I have a great experience. Employees are always there to help with finding anything, trying things on, etc. However, selling is a different story. The last time (before today) I sold clothes, a woman next to me sold a sweater literally covered in cat hair to her BFF behind the counter. Today, after finally getting over the cat hair fiasco, I walked over to Nob Hill with a big box full of cute summery clothes, five headbands, and three purses, all in very good shape. I sold one headband, and ended up getting $2.10 in cash. Just know that buying rocks, but selling gets a big thumbs down. read more

Very friendly staff at the front of store and at the dressing room area. Normally I don't feel cool enough to linger in a place like this, but I was comfortable waiting and looking while my spouse tried on items in the dressing room. The store was clean and appeared to have a diverse and well-curated selection. I also enjoyed the music they had playing. The location is great, too, if you're in the mood to stroll amongst restaurants and some other unique retailers. read more

Buffalo Exchange has been pretty fabulous in the last year or so. I always find something new to wear there, and sometimes it's handmade vintage or designer. Dress prices are especially good. Love this place! Found a great pencil skirt & two tops yesterday. (I wish they had taken a little money off the price of one skirt that had some bad stains, but they said they would not discount it.) What's better than finding a good bargain? Hardly anything. I have been shopping at Buffalo Exchange for about 5 years and only recently have gone in to sell to them. So I'm dividing this review into 2 categories. (1) Shopping experience: I always view my Buffalo Exchange experiences as a hit or miss. I will say that every time I go in I can find something I like, however, I won't always buy because sometimes their items are overpriced (especially for a used item). I really do like the styles of fashion they carry (vintage and unique pieces). One time I found a Nordstrom jacket, brand new with tags, originally $100 and I got it for $20. Let me tell ya, I was doing the money dance that day. But, sometimes I'll go in and nothing will catch my eye. That's okay though, it's still fun to browse. (2) Selling experience: So far I've sold twice to Buffalo Exchange. Once a couple of months ago and once this week. They mostly buy clothes for the specific season, however, if it's a really good piece they buy everything all year round. From my experience selling, I've noticed that they don't buy too many dresses. I think they have so many that they try not to buy more. They also buy more men's clothes than they do women's clothes because more women come in to sell than men. The first time I tried selling I brought in A LOT of clothes. I want to say about 6 medium sized boxes. I was able to get about $80 in cash. This week I went back, with a lot of the same items that they rejected, I only brought in about 2 boxes this time and I got back $70 in cash. I think it all depends on the season and current styles. You can also ask someone working there what trends are selling fast so you know what kind of items to bring in; that's what I did. Overall, I think their buyback is fairly reasonable. I have a lot of experience selling my clothes online (Poshmark and Vinted) and it's just so much easier to bring a box in here and get it over with. Buffalo will give you 50% in store credit of what they price the item, or 30% if you take the cash. read more

For awhile Buffalo Exchange had some interesting fluctuations in experiences, sometimes I would find many items, sometimes I would find questionable buys, and other times it looked like there wasn't enough quality product coming in. However for the past 2 months I've been happy to shop and not just sell at the buy counter! Almost every visit I find something I have to have or put on hold, plus they've become my go-to for needing last minute outfit details. This is the "hippest" resale store that I visited. Geared more to the university crowd, than to the professional working crowd. They only took one of my items. I think I don't have enough tattoos or piercings to comment in a fairway. If you get my meaning. The prices are reasonable. The store smells a little bit like cigarette smoke though. Buffalo Exchange - Albuquerque, NM I have only been in here a couple of times, and I have been moderately impressed each time. Never really end up buying anything because it always figures the stuff I like is priced a little higher than I would really like to pay for it. That's okay though, they have a pretty friendly staff, and a pretty eclectic collection of goodies. I really like that I can find some of my favorite "vintage inspired" brands in here, as I found Pinup Girl Clothing, Unique Vintage, and BAIT shoes. There were some others, too. As far as the buying process goes, pretty good. I mean, they're extremely picky as they are looking for a very specific set of clothing to sell, so that's fine. The buyers are very nice, and if you want, you can talk to them while they look through your items. Not only that, but they also are very transparent about the whole process. The very nice lady, in training even, talked to me while she sorted through my two small bags. She carefully looked over everything, folded it back up and put it back in the bags if it wasn't what they were looking for. Then, the few items she did have interest in, she re looked over (she double checked over everything before finally deciding for sure what she wanted to buy). When she was finished, because she was in training, she asked a manager if things were okay to buy, and her and the manager discussed some things and it was a learning experience for me as well, to see what they were interested in buying. She told me what they wanted to buy (none of this Plato's closet BS where they hide items under other items in a bin they hide BEHIND the counter so you have no idea WTF they are actually buying until you get home and realize you've been taken for a fool...), they tell you what they plan on pricing the item at (they even show you the price ticket as they print it at the time of sale), and they tell you what they can give you (cash or store credit) for the item. Obviously, similar to any other similar stores, they can't give you a lot...they need to make money. That's fine and I get it. I'm sad that "designer" brands devalue so fast, and it's why I'll never buy anything new again because that whole process seems to be very like buying a new car... but they seem pretty fair about it. I could have gotten more on eBay, but now it's done and gone and I don't have to pay shipping fees or posting fees or whatever other fees I get charged. After my experiences yesterday, I'm just going to stick to selling online - it's a lot easier and a lot less shady. I only made $4 on a dress that probably cost me $50 new, and I only wore it once, so ouch. My time is better spent probably selling online, but it was a learning experience for sure. I'll probably just stick to buying from this store instead of selling it, but I do love their buying process a lot more than I do other stores. read more

Pretty good selection as far as BuEx goes, but I swear to god the people who work here think that they are way more hip than they actually are, and their attitude is worse than the people who work at the BuEx in Brooklyn. BROOKLYN, people! Go elsewhere. There are other, independent vintage stores along the same street that could use your patronage a lot more than old BuEx. read more

People love to hate the buyers at Buffalo. The buyers are put in the uncomfortable position of "the customer is not always right". Americans aren't used to this experience. I still like to try selling things at Buffalo because there is a great system of encouraging you to get rid of your old stuff before you buy new stuff. I've bought so many gems completely on trade and this off sets that some items do seem over priced. It's a shopping game that I love to play and I appreciate how their business is almost completely based on recycling clothing. They withstood the economic down turn because they buy old clothes that people don't want anymore and offer fancy name brand items at a lower cost. Buffalo Exchange will continue to satisfy my shopping urges even when I'm low on cash. read more

I had an old Dooney and Bourke purse and some barely worn jeans that I traded in with the hopes of finding some tops for work. I was told that I would receive greater store credit than cash, which is acceptable in any situation such as this. I looked around the store and noticed that you can get pretty much everything new for nearly the same price elsewhere and decided to walk with cash. The employee stated that the store could sell my items for about $120 and I wound up walking with just over $30 cash, which I then promptly spent on beer. Next time I'd rather just donate my clothes to someone in need and skip the long wait and horrendous smell in that place. read more

Staff is snotty, clothes are ugly ("ironically") and relatively expensive, and there are almost no women's clothes above size XS or S... Awesome! You might as well stroll further down to Urban Outfitters where at least the employees are too apathetic to give you the stink eye. read more

I had a very rude sales woman/girl at the counter. I work a job where I have no air conditioning, deal with even more irate customers, and I find a way to still smile and be professional. You're in a shop with air conditioning, you don't have to wear a uniform, you just have to smile and look nice, so drop the bitch attitude. Yes, I was wearing leggings, is my money not good enough for you? However I did find a great pair of shoes and sunglasses, and a lady at the exchange counter was more than friendly. Curly hair and a big smile. I do look forward to coming back, hopefully with less attitude when I buy. read more

Buffalo Exchange is a great store to find vintage, or great designer fashions out at a discounted price ,but Albuquerque location would make you think twice. Hard to look through racks of clothing to find a one shirt to realize that one shirt is torn and could be pick up at target for the same price. Staff is somewhat help ,but tends to keep to themselves. Moved here to go to college and was excited that there was a buffalo exchange, but now i am more disappointed seeing as i know finding nice stuff and good deals isn't going to happen there. I really like this store and always find pieces I want, but it's seriously overpriced.

After coming here for my boss and trying to sell nice namebrand clothing they turned down every item of clothing I showed them. Today I went with a large bag of my clothing and purses to which all but one were turned down. I decided to try Plato's closet they not only bought 70% of my clothing and purses but their store was much more organized, more fashion forward then Buffalo exchange was. Buffalo exchange seems to me to cater more towards the hipsterstyle and not do every day clothing that most of us wear. read more

Never been overly fond of their high prices for used clothes, but eve less impressed with their follow through on the whole 'we buy cloths' bit. Apparently once worn clothes from name brand stores like express and the buckle are of no value. Wasted my time taking clothes in more than once, each time with a shrug and a 'sorry'- but at least after we were told we had nothing of interest the employee made sure to remind us that they are always buying clothing if we ever have anything to sell. Um... Last time I checked that's why I was there in the first place. Save your gas, their not worth your time or energy because apparently you aren't worth theirs. read more

I love the Buffalo Exchange. It is amazing, but only if you are a creative type with an eye and a bit of patience. There, you will find amazing clothes at amazing prices but try to think outside of the box! Only then will you master the secrets of the exchange. Don't waste your time - 1.) as a customer, because the business model is to just play "alternative" music loudly enough to disorient people and make them feel a "cool" ambience so that they don't realize they are just buying basic thrift store items at a 300% markup; 2.) as a seller, because they either lie about what they want or it changes so often there's no point in asking them. I love recycled clothing stores and pretty much only buy my clothes from them. So I'm giving Buffalo Exchange a solid 4 because I am very glad it exists. That said, I shop a lot in many many of the recycled clothing stores in SoCal, and I was pretty surprised at how much more expensive the items were here. But maybe in SoCal, the shops get so many Free People, Betsey Johnson, etc. brands and they don't in Albuquerque, so supply and demand, right? I did find some really cute blazers I could not pass up, but at almost $20 a piece, I almost did. read more

I found this to be a pretty standard Buffalo Exchange. There's some good stuff there if you take the time to look for it. A lot was priced a little higher than I've paid for B.E. stuff in the past, but not outrageous, I didn't think. And, sure, there's a lot of Forever 21 and Old Navy type stuff, and more size smalls than anything else, but that didn't surprise me at all. It's right down the street from the college, people, and that's what a lot of the folk there are wearing. Staff was evenly split between being very friendly and helpful and being super aloof. I spent more than I expected to for what I got, but certainly less than if I'd bought it all new. read more

I think that this place was so stupid. They half folded the clothes, they are way to picky, and pretty annoying. They talked to much. They unfolded all of my clothes, and they didn't even buy any of them. They bought 2 things for 4 dollars. I don't think I will ever come here again. It was also just a waste of my time. I was beyond excited to be able to shop at a Buffalo Exchange again, but my experience fell short. They had some okay stuff, but I felt like their prices were higher than the other locations (Portland, Seattle) where I've shopped. I didn't find much that I liked and the ironic tee I found was stitched weird. I'm also not sure if they give out tokens when you use your own bag, but I am not 100% sure. The employees seemed okay I guess... I didn't have anyone ask me for help or anything. Good news is it wasn't crowded. I guess I didn't really expect the clothes in NM to blow me away (since the locals have an interesting fashion sense), so I wasn't too disappointed. You have to search for good stuff here, but, if you're diligent enough, you'll find what you're looking for. This place is PACKED full of clothing, from brand new boutique clothing (I'm assuming whatever doesn't sell in Albuquerque boutiques) to people's rat-a-tat-tat 10 year old clothing. I've found some good deals here but I must say they've been rare. I don't mind stopping in, though, consigning some items, and peacing out. I must say, though, the consigning is very random. Sometimes I have awful luck with stuff that is very, very current and sometimes they take stuff I didn't think a Goodwill would take. Ha! Makes for a good surprise. read more

Like most re-sale/thrift places it's a hit-or-miss experience. I've definitely found some great things at ridiculsouly cheap prices, and I've also been completely disappointed. Either way, I love coming here. Friends from out of town (i.e. suburbs of the east coast) have had a tendency to go totally nuts for Buffalo. The thing is, since someone has pre-screened the goods before they go on the racks, you are way more likely to find something worth buying. Particularly if you are in the hip, young, indie, twentysomething/college demographic. The trade-off is that it probably isn't going to be Thrift Town cheap, and the salespeople tend to have an attitude. Overall, Buffalo is a pretty good time and you're more than likely to leave with something to be pleased about. read more

Buffalo is a tough place to review. I've been going here for years on and off. On one hand, they offer super unique cool stuff you'll never find anywhere else, and the designer goods are heavily discounted. On the other hand, there's a lot of absolute garbage that has an inflated price (i.e. ~$20 for a worn fast fashion top). Shopping here is definitely a hunting expedition! I've found some of my best pieces but have also left tired and empty-handed. I've sold a lot here too, and it's a great place for sellers because they give you more money for your clothes than online places. If you're going to sell, try to do so during the day on weekdays otherwise the line can get pretty gnarly. The store credit option apparently never expires so I've been tempted into picking that option over the cash :P read more

Went through all my pants today trying everything on and getting rid of everything that doesn't fit anymore. Went to Buffalo Exchange with about 40-50 pants. Had expected that they would buy at least 1 or 2, but as they claimed that it had to be current fashion they didn't take any. I didn't want to buy anything in their store either as all they sell in their store is hideous crap which is definitely not current fashion. Their loss though! It will now be donated to a church of one of our neighbors. I'm sure they'll be happy with all of it, as some of them look brand new and 2 even still have tags on them. read more

The trick to this place is to bring a hot guy with you. They will buy more and give you more for your items. Since the staff is mostly made up of women and gay men, it's nice to have a ringer to get the best deals. Now that we've figured this out, I make sure I always bring my fiance with me as he is said ringer. They do tend to buy more guy stuff, which is both good and bad. The guys selection is only good if you wear a medium-small and are a hipster. The girls section isn't bad expect for the fact that their size tags never match up to the size on the shirt... so ladies, be careful. I have noticed that their quality has gone down hill. We used to shop at Buffalo all the time and now we haven't been there in months and still have nearly $80 on our card. Next time... we'll take the money. read more

I went in to sell some unwanted jewlery. They took one necklace even though the others were in good condition. Their jewlery section just looked like a lot of Made in China native American inspired cheap chokers. I wasn't impressed by the clothes they had. I also couldn't find a single pair of shoes in my size. Some tags said Sale but I had no clue how much the discount was. It was just all around dissappinting. read more

This place really grinds my gears! As a young girl I used to love coming here with my friends and digging through the racks of clothing, trying to find that perfect piece. More or less these days I have no desire to shop here anymore. Tried to sell some clothing and the first couple times I did this it was a great and fun experience. Now and days it just feels like a waste of time. Almost every time they take one to two items or nothing at all. Hate to toot my own horn but nothing I wear is generally on the low end so to have them take only one dress a dress from H&M I have to wonder where there buyers head is at? Then to only be offered $3.60 cash or $6 trade when they will turn around and sell it for $12-$15 you have to question why all the hype? I brought in two bags filled to the top with items ranging from every season, every style, and price point, even custom made leather pants! Maybe they weren't eclectic enough or not on that bohemian wave length but I do not believe everyone wants to look the same as the store employees. I think that's the point to come and shop at these stores is to be able to find pieces that match your style and exude your tastes, not the staffs. While waiting to see the buyer I briefly looked around the store and they have some okay looking stuff but the prices don't match the labels. Many items are overpriced for second hand duds! The purse selection is weak and what is name brand is sitting behind a closed glass case and to home of designers such as coach or dooney which in my opinion falls a little short of high end but I also get that the area is home to many vagrants and all walks of life so that explains the seclusion. Their shoe section is rather large and do feel that they have a pretty wide range of styles and sizes, but no where really to sit and try them on and limited mirrors. Lastly the staff is okay, most are friendly but over the years the kids employed here have an air about them that wreaks of attitude and elitism. Like they are the end all be all fashion gods of Albuquerque. I don't think I will return unless I need a cheap and quick Halloween costume...hippie perhaps!! read more
