We have sailed with Dan several times over the years and always have a great time. We have been lucky enough to have both his daughter and son join us as well and they are a pleasure! If you want a easy, fun sail with great conversation, this is the charter for you. Both kids are seriously smart too! Be prepared for an in-depth conversation with plenty of solid points and questions, if you wish :-) While I could go on, I'll summarize - just book it. Our last sail was up in the air due to weather until the last minute and Dan was totally cool about playing it by ear. Weather broke and we ended up with a perfect late day sail. It is never crowded once on the water, but that day it was just us out. Magical! Thank you Dan and kids and we will see you next summer. PS Hope that VW restoration is going well! read more

We did this as a family for vacation and it was so much fun! Captain Dan was so nice and was great at giving us a tour of the area and it's history. We had a lot of fun talking with him and would definitely go again. Even when fog started to set in he was still so fun and continued to point things out even as we docked a left. Captain Daniel and the Bufflehead are absolute gems of Midcoast Maine. On this, our second voyage with Captain Daniel, our group of four opted to take one of the longer journeys that included a stop on Monroe Island where Daniel prepared us a fabulous lobster lunch on the beach while we wandered about the island. Daniel's insights and historical knowledge of the area made for a fascinating learning experience and he was very happy to answer every and all questions that our group had. We are very much looking forward to another voyage on our next trip to the Rockland area. It can't come soon enough. read more

Had a wonderful time sailing with Captain Dan on the boat with a group of five. Got to sit and trade stories, and even sit at the very front of the boat and watch the waves up close. We brought snacks and drinks for our 3hr ride, and had a great time. It can get slightly cold with all the wind, so I'd suggest bring a windbreaker! I took my family of six out for a sail on a morning in August. It is a beautiful boat. The bay and surrounding waters are just gorgeous. Daniel is a very knowledgeable sailor and captain. It was fun to watch him sail the boat all my himself. He seemed to know every person working in the area and every ship. Daniel is extremely well-versed in sailing and the surrounding area, but also in many other things :-). We loved his quirky personality and especially his love for sailing, old boats, the environment and his hometown of Rockland. This was exactly the beautiful sailing experience that my family and I wished for and I would highly recommend this to any others read more

I expected much more from this adventure. It was a gift to my husband for our anniversary. We told Dan that we had been in Rockland harbor many times, but he gave us the "it's 4:00, so why care?" cruise. He is a very experienced sailor, no question about that; but I was confused about the price and when he said I owed him $430, my mouth must have dropped a foot. I paid, but I would not recommend this cruise and I regret booking it at all. read more

Stopped by mid week in June to see if Dan could take us on a sailing charter, he was doing some painting but dropped everything to take our family of 5 on a wonder two hour sailing charter. A few days later Dan sailed by our vacation home in Owls Head and after giving him a shout he gave us a wonderful call with his conch shell as he sailed past. Went out on a sunset cruise with Dan and his young daughter manning the boat, and it was an awesome experience to sat the least! Dan is so entertaining throughout the 3 hour trip, and he is incredibly knowledgeable about the area. There is room for 6 people to comfortably spread out, and he encourages you to bring wine, beer, or whatever you want aboard to make the trip your own. The night we went was perfect and the weather clear, and certainly made our last day in Rockland very special. I can't recommend Dan and his boat highly enough! read more

Captain Daniel sailed my 2 kids (11/14) and I for 3 hours and it was awesome! He knows everything about the area (and answered all our many questions), the other boats, the land/history - we learned a lot. My daughter wanted to swim so we stopped and all dove off the boat (Daniel included) into the freezing water and it was so great. The ship is beautiful and it's really fun to watch Capt. Daniel maneuver the sails etc. The trip ended with Daniel singing us a song about horseflies (with his small guitar)...and that's all I can tell you about that :).... read more

I went on a 6 1/2 hour sail on the Bufflehead with my friends and their family and the hospitality we received was incredible! We stopped on an island to picnic (homemade food was amazing) went on a hike, and swam. I would absolutely recommend this trip for anyone of any age-it was a once in a lifetime experience read more

Daniel is an amazing Captain. Does a great job with his sloop on the waters even in a deep fog. HE WAs great as a tour guide. You must try him for a wonderful trip on the water anytime. My parents, wife & I took a 3 hour trip on Captain Dan's sailboat. It was a great. relaxing experience. Capt Dan is not only an extremely experienced sailor, he is very knowledgeable about the area and the sites seen, and is just an interesting person to talk to. His boat only holds 6 passengers, which makes his trips so much more intimate and unique. It's truly like having a friend with a great boat (which is even better than owning a boat- so they say). Captain Dan took terrific care of us and we had a great evening Sail. Our 12 and 14 year old novice sailors could not exhaust Dan, his knowledge or his good humor as they tested his learning of everything from geology to wind power on Vinylhaven to history of Rockland to the stars and universe (the grown-ups also asked more than their share of questions...). A trip like this is about your host more than anything else, and I can't imagine anyone not enjoying a day with Dan and Bufflehead. Daniel took my grandma, mom, and me out for a three hour afternoon sail. None of us had ever gone in sailing in the past and it was amazing to watch Daniel handle the ship in very windy conditions all by himself. Daniel is very knowledgeable about the surrounding areas.
