Hustling and bustling, with crowds enticed not just by the gorgeous flowers but also the healthy green houseplants and the shockingly reasonable prices, Columbia Road Flower Market is the place to be on Sundays. Getting a late start (compared to others), my walk from the Elizabeth Line to Colombia Road had me salivating; it seemed that everyone coming in the opposite direction held beautiful bouquets, thriving houseplants, or both. Later in the day people were leaving with their arms so full of oversized greenery that watching them navigate their way down the street was comical. So: the prices are great, the selection is astounding, and everything looks fresh and heathy. Only a city with a population the size of London could pull off such a great and bustling flower market. Getting here is a cinch on the new Elizabeth Line and the route from there to Columbia Road is well-marked. The market theoretically closes at 2 p.m. but many sellers were still hawking discounted product past that time. Come early or late, but do come. It's a crowded, colorful experience for which America really has no equivalent.

I doubt there is any better way to guilt people in to a shop than letting the words of Neil Diamond float around their heads for a while. If you don't bring your loved one flowers then 1) shame on you and 2) maybe you should visit this shop. It's not just flowers in here but a whole range of gifts and cakes. There is a small cafe at the back of the shop too where you can reward yourself after buying your loved one a nice present. Tea is served in beautiful china pots and their cakes are delicious. The flowers themselves are range from the very exotic to the more well known varieties and are all wrapped beautifully. The shop was decorated for Christmas and smelled of fresh flowers, I love that scent. I also found an ornament, a beautiful snow flake, which was a bonus. After looking around I found a bouquet of purple flowers and couldn't resist. I love fresh cut flowers and the owner's arrangements are brilliant, plus she's very friendly and we chatted for a bit while she rang up my purchases. The shop also sells cards, not a very large selection but a large enough selection where you can find a card to go with the flowers you just purchased. I saw several other floral arrangements I liked but decided I couldn't leave the store with everything and happily left with my flowers and snowflake.

For some reason their flowers seem to last for tons longer than any other florist I buy from, the owner says it is because she goes to the flower market most mornings so the stock is very fresh. I think they always have a really lovely range and she will make you bouquets up to any price, starting from about £5. Also she sells a few orchids and pot plants. The place looks gorgeous, and has pretty pretty walls with vintage mirrors up, and there are a few really lovely touches like the stamp on the brown paper wrapping they use on the flowers. Often there is a little cat in the shop too. I don't think he lives there, but he adds to the ambience! I highly recommend Gingerlily Flowers to anyone.

To personalise my bouquet for my special mum, I asked the lovely staff to make me a bunch of every purple flower they had. They were very happy to oblige and created an amazing bouquet for £30. Please do note that this was quite a big bunch and had tulips, lillies and various unknown flowers so it was reasonable priced! I was also on a mission to get a yellow and white bouquet which they made especially also - (a friend of mine was in desperate need of last minute flowers for her mum too) I must commend the staff on their fantastic service as they were happy to make a perfect bouquet for my mumsie! Looking in from the outside, you might get the impression that you're about to enter a jungle...it's filled to the brim with floral goodness! I had a quick chat with the lovely lady who was managing the shop that day and I told her about what I was looking for: a sturdy plant for an office - one that doesn't die of if you fail to pay it special attention on regular intervals. She pointed to a Money Tree, but one that is a slightly different species to the usual one - it's a bit reddish on the tips. I liked it right away - especially her comment about if the plant is growing, the business is growing ;-) Said plant - the shop owner and I named it Charly - is now living happily in our office...and it only takes one pint-ful of water to keep it happy!
