    Ranch Style Eggs
    Matt W.

This little cafe is cosy and comfortable, and serves up delicious food with a smile! While the wait for our food was longer then usual, what arrived was delicious and definitely worth the wait! I opted for a green eggs and ham bagel, which was flavoursome and just enough! My partner selected the Ranch style eggs with chorizo and our friend went with the Shepherds pie. No complaints at all! I would highly recommend the tomato chutney! DELICIOUS! The coffee also was delicious, i went with my customary double shot skinny flat white, which was still delicious and smooth and creamy (which at other Cafes is not always the case). My friend and I also went for the lemon curd tart! Also delicious! I would highly recommend this cafe! Great cosy location, friendly staff and of course delicious and hearty food!

Having driven past this quaint little corner cafe too many times to count since it opened its doors and consistently seeing crowds inside, we figured it was about time we tried it out for ourselves. It was worth checking out for the gorgeous design aesthetic alone - everything is soft, homely, loved and beautiful. Shades of green make the space calm and inviting with the most beautiful feature wall of art deco wallpaper commanding the interior. Creamy white pressed metal sits behind the front counter which brims with all manner of sweet offerings. The chairs don't all match, and are a mixture of polished timber and green velvety soft cushions with a line of bench seating along the feature wall. Very comfortable, if a little pokey for larger groups. We elected to sit outdoors under the verandah on the row of sunken timber beach chairs. Rustic crates act as small tables, however we found it tricky to negotiate breakfast plates, cups of tea and cutlery on such a small area. The arms of the chairs are thankfully quite thick, and can act as a drink holder at a pinch to give some more elbow room. The seats are very pleasant to sink into, although this can prove to be an issue when eating. The cafe is situated on busy Hawthorne Rd, and during our visit our conversation was punctuated with the seranade of noisy motorbikes and grinding truck brakes. It's a very visible spot for them being on a main road of course, but I can't help but think it would be so much more pleasant tucked away in a side street away from the fumes and traffic. Service was pleasant and efficient and we were not left waiting long for both drinks or food. I ordered the sardines with steamed spinach and chipotle sauce with two poached eggs, and the boy-thing went with the savoury mince. My sardines came out looking amazing. They were full, whole fish piled atop the eggs with a dressing of chipotle and spinach. I was salivating at the site. The first mouthful revealed that looks aren't everything. The meal lacked a certain bite, or oomph.. one of my eggs was runny and lovely, the other was hard and powdery. The spinach was bland, and the toast was soggy and unremarkable. I felt as if the chipotle had simply been thrown on the top in a hurry, and it was all-in-all quite uninspiring. The savoury mince was presented in a small ramekin, and all reports suggest it was "fine"... nothing special however. More toast was needed, and it was quite a bland mix to see on the plate. My fresh pineapple, apple and mint juice was served quickly with a frothing head without which I would have been convinced it had just come out of a bottle. The juice was bland and tasted slightly watered down. The atmosphere was of course, second to none and I really really REALLY wanted to like this place. I'm afraid we'll be giving it a wide berth when it comes to future breakfasts, but we agreed it would be a great spot for morning or afternoon tea.

    They are very dog friendly!

I'm a huge fan of Bungalow eight having stopped in for all day breakfasts several times in the past year. The menu is more interesting than the norm, and the food is tasty and uses quality ingredients. The coffee is always good and they offer mugs which I like. The service has always been excellent - efficient, speedy and friendly. Finally, the decor is wonderful - visually I think it's one of the nicest cafés in Brisbane. I will continue to stop when I'm in Bulimba!

The decor is very appropriate for both the area and for the W brand, servers are young and a little overbearing (probably due to inexperience?), and the kitchen, while mostly good, is also occasionally prone to bouts of slowness. Prawns and oysters off the chilled menu are both quite traditional; solid items but one might have expected them to take a few more risks here. On the other hand, W is a huge brand so maybe they're risk-adverse? And the swordfish main course was recommend medium rare but again otherwise not particularly innovative. And to be fair, sticking with the seafood, per the recommendation of all the servers, may have been a mistake on my part. The porchetta and I think the lamb (?) both sounded amazing, but I ended up skipping those. At least the seafood, for a nice place, was very reasonably priced. 3* sounds right. The open aspect of the design made full use of the space and capitalises on the beautiful weather Queenslanders enjoy. Signage is scarce when finding the place and parking is also tough. I'd recommend turning in to the hotel driveway and parking in their car park. Of course this is ticketed so you will need to pay. Good news is you don't have to be a guest to use the car park so you can drive straight in and take a ticket. The restaurant is spacious and open plan. It is welcoming and certainly the decor is modern and interesting by design. One small complaint, being of mature age I appreciate a comfortable and padded chair when out for dinner and the chair I had was neither. After a couple of hours my backside was needing a break! Anyway, the menu is limited but diverse. All the dishes were interesting and appealing. I had the only steak on the menu which was a 500 gram t-bone. I was in a party of eight so two others ordered the t-bone... in total two medium and one rare. Others in the party ordered fish, bugs and chicken. We also ordered some starters which was a sweet potato hummus and a fava bean and anchovy dip. Bread was an organic sourdough with cultured butter. All were delicious. Mains arrived all at once which is a real necessity in my books however the waiter could not identify which of the three steaks was the rare one. He simply placed one down in front of the person who ordered it and said "that should be it". One diner received an incorrect meal which was promptly returned to the kitchen and replaced with the correct one. No real drama, these things can happen. All diners enjoyed their meals with no complaints whatsoever. The portions were generous and all were visually appealing. My steak was delicious., cooked perfectly, juicy and tender. The meals don't come with sides so we ordered a mix of different dishes including asparagus, roasted garlic and rosemary potatoes and carrots. All were delicious. In terms of drinks the beer and wine lists were extensive and well represented. Service was efficient and slightly ambiguous. Whilst everyone was pleasant I didn't see anyone smile or engaging in terms of recommendations when requested. In all, I would recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting a slightly upmarket but relaxing atmosphere with great views, excellent food and a very good list of wines and beers.

The baristas are exceptionally skilled, and there is a selection of roasts to choose from. While I normally like my coffee black, something that isn't too hard to make, I've had a few flat whites from Penny which have been excellent. A friend of mine asked if they're able to pull a piccolo using soy milk, without the milk splitting. Despite indicating that the barista don't need to try if they haven't made one before, they produced one (after two failed attempts) by slowly adjusting the extraction to the point where they could add a shot to soy milk without producing soy cheese. Doing this despite explicitly not needing to is the sort of above and beyond that earns long-term customers. The food is similarly stellar. The avo on sourdough may at first blush seem like a pricier version of what everyone else is doing. The flavours in Penny's version are, however, inventive and balanced to a point I haven't had elsewhere. There's a nice balance between the feta, dukkah and pomegranate where you can taste all of them without one overpowering the other. The vegetabowl is similarly great. There's just enough of each ingredient that you can taste them, without the dish being overpowered by one note. Penny's interior makes maximal use of the space. There are comfortably sized tables out front and inside, and some bar seating by the espresso machine. The best seats in the house, though, are out back, and include a few longer tables. The staff at Penny are attentive, friendly and great at pulling a coffee and making food.

I had bacon, hash browns and an egg, while she had an Aussie Sunrise: One egg, bacon & ham, 2 pancakes, banana and pineapple (not pictured). My plate was hearty, and the hash browns were well done the way I like them. Nonetheless, the food tasted just okay. I didn't finish my food. I ate one of her pancakes and it was rubbery. Regarding the ambiance, its whimsical here. I think it used to be a church. Unfortunately, table was pretty sticky. The service was friendly but leisurely. You have to get your own water, the waitress didn't check on us, and you pay up front. All in all, a cheaper experience vs bfast at Felix for Goodness. The fruit they have to go with pancakes are in syrups/sweetened, and I asked whether I could just have fresh bananas -- and they were able to do that for me, which I appreciated. As others have written, they're understaffed so it does take a while to get served once being seated pretty immediately. But the server was very nice. I'll say, though, and this might be because of all the wood in the former church, it was just a little -- what's a good word? -- grungy? Grimy? Sticky? It wasn't filthy, but it just felt like I was eating in a college bar from the 1980s the morning after a kegger dance party. So decor/ambience, I'd go to no stars -- but for pancakes I'd give 'em 4 stars.
