My local Bunnings…read more Despite renting, there's always some little thing that needs done. Kids marked up the wall, want to get a few hooks to hang a picture... always something. For being one of the smaller Bunnings, they do have pretty much everything. I also find their customer service seems to be a little better too. The staff are quite knowledgable, and there seems to always be someone around. If you're in the area and need some hardware... :)

I should point out quick smart that I have almost zero hardware knowledge. I know the difference between a nut and a bolt, I understand the relationship between a screw and a screwdriver, and I even recognise the function of the all-too-often-forgotten washer. Pliers, hammers, wrenches...got it, got it, got it. But the rest of it, I can't even name the rest of it, let alone imagine in what situation they might be used. Anyway, this store is packed to the rafters with stuff I don't recognise, fascinating things of stone and wood. I imagine one could build a palace if they just knew how to utilise all those little bits and bobs, and massive, scary looking machines. it would be the coolest thing to know what I was doing in a shop like this, but as it was, it was pretty cool just to be pick up a few items and ponder it's purpose.

I went in looking for some white paint to cover a "mishap" in the ceiling (a housemate didn't read the instructions when removing a 3M strip) and whilst I was told that the likelihood of being able to cover it perfectly without repainting the entire ceiling was zero, they didn't try to convince me that I should actually do that. I appreciate this. The store is small - the carpark is probably twice the size, but don't let that fool you. It's well stocked, and has all sorts of things for hire. Trucks, even.

On my most recent visit, I received advice on how to go about my project (stripping paint form door furniture) in an alternative way, and suggestions about who may be able to provide plating services and lock parts. With a history as a sawmill (the last operating hardwood mill in the metropolitan area according to them), this show stocks a selection of lumber that honours it's pedigree. If they don't have it in stock, they will order it in. But they probably have it. It can be a little difficult to get a specific make or model of some products as the range is not as great as with mega box shop, but these guys have everything you need. Great range of plants and vegies for the outdoors-inclined.

We were overjoyed when we finally met the folks from Creative Kitchen Workshop! Not only were they prepared to tackle our smaller job, we felt like it wasn't a chore, that they really wanted to help us enhance what we already had, not just make a few quick bucks for a small job they could fit in on the side. They came out, they measured, took notes and drew sketches. Our 'purchase order' looked more like a plan for a whole kitchen rebuild rather than a few extra bits. Sure, we had to wait till they had a gap in their schedule, but even with a full build, I would have expected that. On install day, the team arrived on time, installed quickly and professionally and then cleaned up afterwards! You can't ask for better than that!
