Or, as Stewy would say: "Good lord, it's like the spice rack in my fantasy kitchen." Except that's not something a bloke would say really, not unless they wanted to get beaten up with tyre irons. I've been to the Chatty store three times in the last three days for plywood, cable ties, spotlights, power boards, clamps, extension cords, you name it. They recognise me now. We share knowing nods. It's nice. I really dig the whole ease of it all. No big fuss, no knocking out half your day to get supplies. Pull in to the oversized carpark (it's like Texas all up in this place), trot upstairs, grab one of the billion people on hand to help you, and get out. No muss, no fuss. I also like how all the staff are all pretty much slightly different versions of your dad or your uncle (the good uncle, not the one that touches up cousins at Christmas lunches). Oh, and one Saturday morning the North Sydney Men's Choir was doing a sausage sizzle in the car park and tried to recruit me because they needed more altos or sopranos or whoever the high-pitched, non-baritone guys are. My first experience there was a tad confusing - I only wanted some small handheld lights for a light box, and was under the impression that I'd need to build it myself. After explaining my predicament to one of the staff member, an older man, who looked like the best person to ask about electrical lighting, I was told to buy some parts here, and or go to a lighting shop for a pre-made alternative. After some further poking around the store, I found exactly what I needed, with no guidance from any further staff members. At checkout the staff we're less than impressed, and didn't engage with their customers further than just taking their money. It's only a hardware store, but some level of good customer service should still be expected.

The shop is very old fashioned with some of the stock looking as if it came out of the ark I can't see it getting better. They stock paint and building supplies which are their biggest sellers and they have a car park out the back so tradies can load everything they need but the shop has halved its size since Bunnings arrived. I've been in there when I wanted something unusual or something quick that I know they sell. It's convenient, what more can I say.

Wandering those dizzying isles of homewares, absolutely anything seems possible. Fortunately I tend to snap to before I attempt to crap the entire warehouse into my car. Instead I'll usually just wander up to one of the many friendly and knowledgable staff and ask about this that and the other. Tools, colours, key cutting - these guys know it all. The Gordon branch may be more modest than it's neighbour down in Artarmon, but it's still a great place to shop...or to dream!

I've come here over the years for all my house paints, curtains, lawn mowers, garden tools and nursery pots and plants. If ever I have needed any help with DIY plans, the friendly staff always are able to give me tips and advice on how to do a great job. I especially love the garden section. The manager in charge is fabulous because if you ask nicely, plants that look a bit tattered can be marked down to $5 or $10. Go home and care for them and in no time the plants are thriving.
