I was originally referred by my primary care physician to Dr. Burdi after months of back pain without any relief. Dr. Burdi ordered physical therapy and an MRI that showed that the L5-S1 joint degeneration was causing my pain. When physical therapy and cortisone shots were found to be ineffective, surgery was explained as the best way to address the pain. I was hesitant at first due to the lengthy recovery and time I would need to take off from work (I am a kindergarten teacher). However, I decided that surgery would be the best option for me and I am so glad I had the procedure. Dr. Burdi did a great job explaining the procedure and recovery. The pain after surgery was minimal and I was off pain medication by the second day. Getting in and out of bed took some help for the first few days until I was more mobile. I didn't realize how tiring daily activities would be after surgery and how frequently I would need to rest. Each week after surgery I noticed great improvement. I never completely understood how involved your back is in every day to day activity. I am stronger now than I was for years prior to my surgery and I am pain free. Make sure you utilize physical therapy and keep up your exercises at home. It makes a world of difference. Now being one year post-op, I am so glad I had the surgery. He ridiculed my insurance, lectured me about my Insurance and something I won't repeat on here. something a Male dr should never say to a female. Out of line and inconsiderate. demands you use their MRI, has no compassion for those who had issues with MRI. I found another great Dr who has done many, many surgeries in Mission Viejo area. He as reasonable and kind and his associate was amazing too....We do have choices and I made one to not see this Dr. I also talked to a nurse who said he was unkind as well. At 55, I was very hesitant to move forward with an L4-5 level fusion, laminectomy, and decompression surgery for my disc herniation, pinched nerves, and spondylolisthesis--but the pain had become unbearable. Choosing Dr. Burdi was one of the best decisions I made. He is a highly knowledgeable and skilled orthopedic surgeon, and I trusted him from the start. What I didn't fully expect was how challenging the first three weeks of recovery would be. It was tough, but I also understood that this wasn't going to be an easy process. Healing takes time, patience, and commitment. Now, three months post-surgery, I can honestly say I feel pretty good. The pain is completely gone--I actually felt relief right from the beginning. Now it's more about healing from the surgery itself and staying consistent with PT. My advice to anyone considering this surgery: be patient and follow your doctor's instructions closely and lots of ice! Recovery is a journey. While you can do quite a bit after three months, it's important to remember that full healing can take six months to a year, especially when it comes to avoiding bending, twisting, or lifting heavy items. Dr. Michael Burdi performed surgery on my lumbar spine in May 2025. I had 5 discs that were 100% compressed and one disc that was facing the wrong direction. As a result of the compressed discs I had sciatica in my right leg so bad I could not walk more than 10 yards without having to sit down. The procedure took 8 1/2 hours to complete. Following surgery I was up walking shortly after waking up. Within 6 weeks following surgery I was traveling to Europe and walking 5-7 miles per day on uneven pavement. The sciatica was completely gone. After 8 weeks I was totally pain free. I would highly recommend scheduling an appointment with Dr. Burdi if you are having back pain. Update to my previous review. After living in absolute agony for over a year and a half I received proper care and found out. I had a major problem called RCVS. Doctor Burdi. This resulted in a stroke event for me. So thanks for saying "you don't need these other tests and, believe me I've been doing this a long time". I was referred to Dr Burdi after what I thought was a hip problem, turned out to be a spine issue. Dr Burdi is highly educated, well trained, very experienced, very conservative and methodical in his approach and works with only the facts; no guessing. He looks at the pictures, does the physical exam and then explains to you what you have, what he can do for you (or can't) and why he recommends a certain course of action AND WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT. In my case, it is physical therapy and he performed 3 spinal injections which as of this writing, eliminated the pain down my leg and in my hip. I was awake while he did the injections and I was impressed with how meticulous his work is and how he was able to negotiate around the bone spurs in my spine. I find Dr Burdi entertaining as well as competent, however his personality is not for everyone. He doesn't "sugar-coat" things and he has a very high opinion of himself, which I find very entertaining. His front desk staff and nurses are courteous and his procedure staff are competent as well. January 9 I had my L4 L5 fused as well as L5 S1 by Dr. Burdi. My regret is that I did not have this surgery two years earlier by Dr. Burdi. I have experienced back pain for years and after several opinions I selected him for the surgery. Dr. Burdi explained the surgery in detail to me, which put me at ease. I felt relief immediately after surgery and at two weeks post op I was surprised at how good I felt. At four weeks I felt even better and now at almost 8 weeks I have to remind myself that I have had fusion surgery and still am recovering. I am 6 weeks post-op from a fusion from L4-S1 with a disc replacement. I had one incision from the back. I was able to schedule my surgery very quickly and returned to work after just two weeks! Cosmetically the incision is beautiful, everyone I've show it too is nothing but impressed with how amazing it looks. My work was shocked when I said I only needed two weeks off to recover, realistically I only needed one. The first week was extremely manageable as long as you follow your medication schedule and take pills as prescribed. After that first week I was mostly pain free! I've dealt with some expected nerve pain and initially had thigh numbness. The numbness lasted about two weeks. The nerve pain started in my thighs, then went down to just my calves, then to both my feet. Now I have just a little bit of nerve pain at the top of my right foot. All the nerve pain was manageable and I was prescribed medication to manage as well. I'd take the nerve pain over the back pain any day, but thankfully this is just a temporary recovery thing. Post-op is working closely with Waldron PA-C who listens to my concerns and explains everything in easy to understand ways. I've spent the past 10 years with back pain that would shoot down into my thighs. I'd only be able to stand for about an hour before needing to sit or lay for several hours to find only a little comfort. Working with Dr Burdi and Waldron PA-C is the best decision I've made for myself! I am 6 weeks post op and have cried multiple times with how grateful I am at my second chance at life. I've had 0 back pain since surgery other then the initial surgical site pain that was minimal for a week. First, I must say Dr. Burdi, Tyler and Pat and front office...bravo, great job. I went to Dr. Burdi first in 2021 with sciatica pain and lower back spasms, scheduling epidural shots in my back periodically, up until my L5-SI Spondylolisthesis lumbar shifts had just shifted too much. My first scare was in 2024 when one day I woke up with no feeling in my legs and I knew it was time for the fusion surgery. The surgery was a success AND Dr Burdi also found that I had spina bifida oculta below the surgery area and he fixed it right there and then with a Dura patch. Going home the next day, I had a walker and all the meds I needed. The first 2 weeks were tough with pain, but the meds tempered the pain. I was surprised at first when I had nerve pain down my legs, but called the office and got medicine for that too (the nerves had to be moved around during the surgery and were still "hot) and the nerve pain went away soon after. During the first week, I had PT come in- house and after the 3rd week, I went out to PT and also had medicine instructions from Tyler and Dr. Burdi as to exactly what I should do to have a successful outcome (like tapering off the medicine and weight lifting restrictions and how active I could be with exercise and stretches.) By 3 months after the surgery, I was starting to feel like myself again; going to the gym and doing my cardio and some small weight lifting as well. Sadly, there isn't an option for negative stars. I had a laminectomy /fusion L3,4,5 on July 11, 2022. I was hesitant to have the surgery that was suggested, but Dr Burdi insisted that I needed the surgery, so I went ahead with it. I should have trusted my instincts. I woke up from the surgery with no feeling in my thigh and severe numbness and tingling in my feet. I was told this was " not unusual and there is always nerve damage risks" I continued to experience pain and neuropothy and 6 months later had another MRI. I was told everything looked normal. I might add that Dr Burdi has the worst bedside manner of any Dr I have ever come in contact with. He is condescending, rude ,talks over his patients, and has zero compassion. I should've listened to my instinct and ran like hell, but I was desperate. Fast forward to a year after the surgery I was still in severe pain, although the pain had changed to a whole new type of pain. Not the same as what I was experiencing prior to surgery and I told him this. He pretty much dismissed me and said there was nothing more they could do for me, suggested pain management and basically sent me on my way. I have been suffering almost 3 years now. Finally 2 weeks ago I saw a Neurosurgeon for a second opinion and had an MRI and CT Scan. I was informed yesterday that 2 of the screws are loose and hitting a major nerve. Now I have to have another surgery to fix Dr Burdis botched surgery and they have to go through my stomach as well as my back. This is not an elective surgery like the first one. I underwent lower back fusion 1 yr ago exactly by Dr. Burdy. Today was my discharge day from the office. I wanted to write a follow up after 1 yr post op. All I can say, if someone asked me if I was glad to have undergone surgery, the answer would be absolutely yes! Both Dr. Burdy and Tyler Waldron, the PA were except and always readily available. They explained throughly. As a result of the surgery,I was able to participate in a 16 day trip to Columbia and not use a wheelchair in the airport terminal and participate in all activities. I had a confirmed appointment in 7.2 at 0900. When I arrived I was advised that their records did not show I had an appointment. I have been seeing Dr. Burdi for a minimum of 7 years due to my right-sided nerve pain. I canceled my 2015 surgery with him because my mom passes away a few months earlier. I tried many pain management processes with another doctor and my nerve pain just kept getting worse. Dr. Burdi gets to the point and does not sugar-coat what he is telling you. He provided the realistic positives and negatives of back surgery. I sure appreciated his honesty throughout my visits with him. I had back surgery with Dr. Burdi in Nov. of 2022. Dr Burdi reviewed my X-rays and explained what was wrong with my back. He explained that it would be my choice whether to try pain management, such as an epidural. He explained my situation would never improve, but pain management might be a solution I chose to get an epidural in March 2023, and it helped some.I got another one in April as I was going to take a trip to Europe and wanted to be as pain-free as possible. This helped enough so I had a good vacation. When I got back I decided to go with the surgery so I would feel better without having to get an epidural every few months. I am so glad I did. As of right now I am pain-free. It has been 3 1/2 months since my surgery by December, I should be able to play golf etc. as this will be my six month healing period. The reason it has been a year and a half, is because they worked with me on trying to heal my back step-by-step, not just jumping into surgery right away. Horrible. If I could give less than one star I would. I came in with neck pain but my should pain was off the charts and completely made worse in PT. Sorry but I am less than thrilled with the phone nurse Pat who instead of listening to my concerns and requests to find out where my pain was actually coming (MRI) from (neck or shoulder) just wanted to argue and talk over me. Here is a hint... when a patient comes in with pain for over a year instead of worrying about if the insurance will pay for an MRI, offer options. Like would you like to pay for it yourself? Make suggestions and referrals to Doctors who specialize in the areas where the pain is if you're not sure. Nothing wrong with second options and conferring with other Doctors to I don't know - make sure. Don't tell me you're the best and then have the nurse treat me like I am stupid. Most people know their body better than Doctors think. The way you treat people matters. Learn to listen and not talk over. Already moved to a new doctor. read more

I had lower back pain for about one year. The pain usually came and went, but this time it was different. When I woke up on the morning of April 21st, I felt pain not only in my back but also in my entire right leg. I went to urgent care, where they gave me a prescription for pain, but they didn't help. Over the following days, my pain worsened, so my husband took me to the emergency room (ER). At the ER, they gave me more painkiller pills and an injection, which provided only temporary relief before the endless pain returned. During that time, I couldn't sleep and I couldn't stay at one position for more than one minute, no mention having a normal life like driving, walking or eating at the table. I found Doctor Burdi through my insurance network. I visited Tyler Waldron PAC, who is Doctor Burdi's assistant. We tried steroids, physical therapy, and various painkillers, but my pain never went away. I also attempted chiropractic treatment, but it didn't work either. After undergoing the MRI, Tyler presented me with two options: injecting steroids into the spine (conservative therapy) or taking a Lumbar Diskectomy surgery. From that point forward, I began seeing both Doctor Burdi and Tyler. Doctor Burdi thoroughly and professionally explained the advantages and disadvantages of both options to me. Considering the seriousness of the pain I suffered every day and the size of the herniated disc, I decided to move for a soonest surgery. Right after the surgery, when I woke up, the pain in my right leg was completely gone. I previously wrote a very positive review of my experience with Dr. Burdi for a microdiscetomy in 2016. In the years since then, my back had remained pain free and I've been able to do 60-70 mile bike rides, hike the Inca Trail with my son, and more. Unfortunately, I didn't develop the best habits and continued to put a lot of strain on my back. In late 2023, I lifted a bunch of very heavy boxes into overhead storage in my garage and I knew that I had done something wrong. I started to get extreme pain in my lower back, which eventually settled into my left leg. The pain was very strong and made it difficult for me to sit, lie down, or stand. Traveling for work was difficult and I was finding it hard to concentrate due to the excruciating pain. I went back to see Doctor Burdi and his PA, Tyler Waldron. They helped me quickly get an MRI and it was clear that the disc (L5-S1) had now completely degenerated. Dr. Burdi recommended that, at this point, a fusion was the only way to get true, long term relief. Dr. Burdi and Tyler performed the surgery on 12/15/23 and I was immediately free of pain. I was blow away by how little pain there was after the surgery and during recovery. They said that part of it is that I was in quite good shape and relatively young (50 years old). I was working again from home in about 1 week. Since then, I have been meticulously following their recovery advice. I saw a physical therapist for multiple visits to learn not only how to recover, but how to build much better habits for caring for my back so that the whole thing stays in better shape hopefully for years to come! Over the first month or so after surgery, I occasionally felt some nerve twinges, but I wouldn't describe them as painful and Dr. Burdi, Tyler, and their wonderful NP, Pat, helped me understand that this is normal as the nerves are recovering from the trauma leading to surgery as well as the surgery itself. They have been incredibly helpful and supportive in guiding me on what I should and should not do during recovery, as well as what to expect every step of the way. My mom recently had fusion surgery in another city and wasn't able to travel here. I can say that the pre-care, results, and post-care were not nearly as good. Dr. Burdi and Tyler and team do an absolutely amazing job. Since my first surgery, my father in-law and my best friend have also both had fusion surgery from Dr. Burdi and they are both extremely happy and no longer in pain years after the surgery. While everyone is different and surgery isn't for everyone or every situation, I would strongly recommend Dr. Burdi as an extremely good surgeon and an objective advisor who will not recommend surgery unless he truly believes it will help and then will be involved before and after the surgery as well as doing an incredibly careful and competent job on the procedure itself. Well over a year ago I was having lower back pain that was affecting my daily life. I went to see Dr. Burdi and his PA Tyler Waldron to discuss my situation. I started on a course of physical therapy to see if that would help and it did not. After receiving an MRI it was obvious that I was going to need surgery. I decided to write a short paragraph about my recent lower back surgery at the request of Dr. Burdi. He was the doctor who performed my back surgery (along with an entire medical team). He indicated that many people feel apprehensive about this type of surgery. Sometimes it helps when someone else tells of their personal experience. That is me! I must start by explaining that Dr. Burdi told me in a step by step detail, the entire operational procedure. He did so and used language that I could easily understand. He used visual aides, pictures and model "mock ups" in this part of my learning curve. By the morning of the operation, I had very clear instructions on what was needed by me to have a successful operation. I was sedated and I woke up thinking I still had to be operated on. But I was alert with no after effects of the operation. During the operation, there was another doctor (among the many other assistants in the room), who was responsible for managing a special computer. This computer allowed the doctors to make "cuts" very precisely and do "repairs" that were needed on a microscopic level. Praise the Lord, Dr. Burdi did a phenomenal job! I had no pain but I was very explicitly told not to BLT (Bend, Lift or Twist) for several weeks. I was able to be discharged the same afternoon. I commend Dr. Burdi and his team for an outstanding job. Just a side note, Dr. Burdi has an assistant, Pat Weber, who was just as wonderful. My 1st operation was with a noted neurosurgeon. He decompressed two discs in my lower back. After months of postoperative pain and physical therapy, . the pain returned. Dr Burdi explained the discs moved and if wanted, he would fuse them in place. He gave me 3 choices. return to first Dr for 2nd opinion, do not have operation if I could perform 90 % of activity with current pain level,or operate. No niceties, just plain factual discussion. He further noted the 5 1/2 operation would require months of rehab and physical therapy. I had the operation and after 1 1/2 months see major improvement. Please ask your surgeon exactly what they will do. Fusion is a necessity in my opinion. Coincidentally, my wife now requires the same operation. She cancelled her appointment with the referred neurosurgeon and asked for a referral with Dr Burdi and he will do her operation. I note some reviews mention Dr Burdi's personality. My injury caused intense crippling pain in the right leg. I thought I damaged my hip but, after months of rehab we found that the pain was caused by a bulging disc hitting the sciatic nerve. At times the pain was so intense that I could not walk, sit or move for weeks at a time. My only option was pain meds (I despise pain meds!), the couch and full time care. I have spent the last three years in and out of different Doctors offices. I have had multiple epidurals, MRI's and rehab programs. I've tried Rolfing, traction and even some eastern meditation to eliminate the pain. Each of the treatments gave me temporary to zero relief. I needed help but had no idea where to turn. After asking around I got a couple of names and started researching the who's who of back doctors. I chose Dr Michael Burdi based on web based reviews, word of mouth and convenience. I was hoping that I had the right Doc but who knows... My first surgery was a discectomy. Dr Burdi performed a successful surgery, unfortunately, I had a reherniation months later and was again out of commission. Based on my situation and the condition of my disc, Dr Burdi suggested a fusion of the L4 L5 vertebrae in lue of a second discectomy. I was extremely nervous about such an invasive surgery. Would I surf again, could I travel for work or continue to drive and restore my vintage cars? Would I be able to spend quality time with my wife and kids? One of my jobs is Business coach and I believe that people in any profession should strive to be the best. They should be confident but not cocky and a master of their craft. How was I going to figure out if Dr Burdi had what I was looking for? I was overwhelmed and unsure of what I should do. At a crossroads, I stepped back from the situation and I did what I do when I am interviewing business partners or doing deals. I based my decision on character and grit. Simply put I asked myself, "is my teammate or future teammate in it to win it?" Three days before the surgery we met for our final pre op meeting and Dr Burdi could see the fear in my eyes. He knew how uncertain I was about moving forward with surgery. He knew what I'd been through and where I was heading without surgery. He gave me a very empathetic look and said in the most humble and confident way," Jeff, I've got this... I am REALLY good at what I do. You'll be fine." Maybe it was the tone of his voice or the look in his eyes, I'm not sure but, at that moment I knew I had the right surgical team. He and his medical assistant Tyler had performed hundreds of these surgeries and with a high degree of success. They were the right choice and they had the track record to prove it. The surgery went well. Post op I had no need for pain meds and I started walking unassisted day two. I'm only a few weeks post surgery but things are looking up. I am walking, sitting, driving, working and going to PT. I am so thankful for their hard work and sticking with me through a very dark uncertain time. I went to Dr. Burdi about 8 weeks ago with a back injury. He took X-rays and told me to go to physical therapy, which I did for 8 sessions, and I had a follow up appointment where he scheduled me for an MRI. By this time, I was barely able to walk in great pain. The day before my MRI my back went into massive spasms and I had to take an ambulance to the hospital. In the hospital I had 2 MRIs done and had them sent to Dr Burdi. I then called and asked for him to look at them and set up a call with me to discuss his recommendations for surgery, epidurals or other treatments. He refused to call me and said he did not do phone consultations. I was stuck in a hospital bed and unable to move. I called 3 more times to his assistants and begged for him to talk with me or come see me in the hospital, which was 5 minutes from his office. He refused multiple times. His only option was to come into his office, which I physically could not do. Dr. Burdi abandoned me as his patient and I will never use him or Community Orthopedics again despite having seen and used many doctors there over the past 5 years for other issues. read more

Dr. Burdi and his PA Tyler are the greatest team anyone could ask for when you are up against surgery on your spine. Went to him with major issues and the last surgery which was in Dec. 2021 made me so thankful for his expertise..had a fusion of L4-L5 and three years before had a fusion on L3- L4. He's a no nonsense kind of guy. Tells you what you need and doesn't mess around. Alll of his office staff are so friendly and helpful. I was referred to this provider by my GP. Just like all the others have posted, Dr. Burdi and his assistance are rude and patronizing. As a registered nurse I was especially appalled at the behavior. I have never in my life walked out of a doctors appointment. I have never even considered it. I absolutely do NOT recommend this care provider. read more

Dr. Burdi and his staff are so experienced and made me feel comfortable with my decision to have a spinal fusion. I am 6 months post op and I feel as good as new. I am so glad I went through with the surgery because I was very much debilitated before. My life can go on now like it was before my back pain. This Dr. was the ONLY doctor to talk my (stubborn and bossy) mom into a spine surgery that has literally changed her life! I met Dr Burdi the moment before they were about to wheel my mama back to surgery. I asked if anything could go wrong, he waved his arms about and proclaimed he fixes backs not hurts em!! Then he did the head motion to the nurse that showed me how to get outta there. He was energetic and no nonsense..I could see how his brazenness might be off putting to a timid old person with no chutzpah, but for my sassy mama, this man is a gift from the universe! Went to see Dr Burdi two time for a lower back and leg nerve pain. He sent me for XRays looked at them and told me I was fine. Two weeks later and after seeing a Chiroprator, the chiroprator sent me for an MRI. I was diagnosed with a spinal cord cyst and needed immediate surgery. Let's just say not by Burdi.
