I rarely if ever write reviews about anything, however, reading the reviews from Nicole N and Ben W, I can only add, amen. They've written my review already. I echo their complaints entirely. Useless staff, messages not returned, the good Dr always seems to be unavailable, etc etc. I have had real pain from my left knee for a month now. I took an MRI last Wednesday. I was in the next day for an ultrasound. The nurse gave me the MRI results, 2 pages worth, written in medical language, some of which I could decipher using Wikipedia. I left a message last Friday to someone, I presume, in the office. No answer as of yet, but, the week has only just begun, so, hopefully...But I'm not counting on it. I don't relish writing bad reviews, but unfortunately the doctor and staff need to hear this. I hope. read more

I have noticed a fair amount of negative posts regarding the office staff. Like many businesses before and after covid, it was hard for most of us. That being said, I saw Dr. Ashkenazi two months ago for a very bad knee issue that my primary care physician recommended. After getting and MRI Dr. Ashkenazi called me with the results and went over my options Bottom line is that I needed a total knee replacement and I agreed. Fast forward to today I'm one week postoperative and can't be more impressed at how Dr's team handled my procedure from admitting to discharge. This is not an easy procedure yet as I write this I can't be more thankful for the entire team and how that made me feel more relaxed and positive. Be careful what you read. There are two sides to every story. I just felt I needed to address this as I doubt you will find a physician that truly cares and that includes his entire staff. We get to choose for the most part, our doctor. For me this was one of the best experiences considering that I'm one week out of surgery and a lot of rehabilitation to follow. I was very impressed by this doctor. He was very kind and caring. He took a thorough medical history during my appointment, followed by a thorough exam, and a lot of patient education. Part of the patient education was showing me my MRI and explaining everything. Finally, he outlined a clear plan of care for me. I felt like he actually cared about my back pain issue and gave me a realistic plan of care with expectations for the future. Highly recommend! read more

I had a herniated spinal disc and Dr. Ashkaneze operated on me 2 1/2 months ago. I first went to another surgeon but was weary of his response to tell me I need surgery without even discussing any other possible treatments. Went to Dr. Ashkaneze for second opinion and liked him better. Very likable. Great explanations. He could answer difficult questions right away. I could just tell he knows what he is talking about. He discussed the options, he told me that there is a good chance I will need surgery (at least 50/50), but had me go through physical therapy for a few weeks. And then when I was not getting a whole lot better, we discussed it in detail and I decided to get spine surgery (microdiscectomy). Got surgery: rolled into ER, looked around the room and next thing I know I opened my eyes in recovery a few hours later. I was up and walking around 10 minutes later. Went home the same hour and 6 days later at my post up visit I was walking up to his floor on the stairs (forgoing the elevator). Another reviewer used the words: "magic hands". Absolutely awful from the time I walked in to the office to the time I received a bill. Dr. Ahskenaze was over 2 hours late to my "appointment". He spent about 10 minutes with me, billed my insurance, and has the audacity to ask for an additional $29.53 on top of what my insurance company thinks he's worth. Stay away from this Doctor's office if you're looking for someone you can count on and trust to operate on your spine. A skilled surgeon with compassion for his patients is a rarity. Dr.Ashkenaze is the definition of what I was looking for in a surgeon. Herniated and bulging discs , along what a nerve wrapped around scar tissue didn't allow me to straighten up, or walk without severe pain. Following surgery I am now able to walk for miles, without any discomfort. If you are in need of an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Ashkenaze should be on your A list of surgeons.. I would never go back to this office. I was originally scheduled with a different dr. Not only did I wait 2 hours before they said the Dr didn't realize I was there and left but I verified my insurance would cover the visit with the new doctor (Dr Ashkenaze) and that he was in network. I went ahead and saw Dr Ashkenaze however he was not in network and I was notified I now owed more than my co-pay. When trying to clear up this misunderstanding with Debbie who is in charge of billing. She was extremely rude and had an attitude. I was trying to understand what was going on and she continued to talk down to me as if I was an idiot. I was explaining what my insurance company told me and she got more and more rude. I told her I did not appreciate her attitude and she told me to pay my bill and hung up on me. I cannot believe this is how she speaks to patients. She should be able to explain my bill to me without being rude. read more

The office staff of doctor Ashkenazi are not helpful at all.  also,  It is almost impossible to reach doctor via phone. If you are lucky and reach Yvette, you will be put on hold multiple times, maybe 3-5 times for quite long. If she tells you that she would call back, you rarely receive a call.  for a simple question you need to put at least 2-3 hours and sometimes 2 days and you may never get the answer. Even when you are in pain, you do not receive a call from doctor. I had 3 injections that cost me $615.  After the 3rd one I was in severe pain and unable to sleep . I called Yvette and explained and asked for help. she told me that Dr. Ashkenaze is not in the office but she would discuss this with the other doctor and would get back to me before they close.  I waited 48 hours and nobody called me.  I called back and the new receptionist told me that Yvette is not in the office and would return on Monday.  I asked if she could help me with speaking to the other doctor. Again, she told me to call back on Monday.  I asked for the office manager and she said CAll BACK MONDAY.   I asked again for the manager again and she transferred me to doctor Abdollahi's assistant and she did not pick up the phone either. On Monday, No body called me. I had to call multiple times AND ASKED to talk to Doctor Ashkenazi. I told them I was in pain. both office manager and Yvette told me that they pass the message to doctor, but DOCTOR ASHKENAZI NEVER CALLED ME BACK to find out what was wrong with my knees. Went in to see Dr. Ashkenaze (with my right knee x-rays) because of severe right knee pain for no apparent reason, just woke up with it. He diagnosed tendinitis and sent me for P.T. f or three weeks. The P.T. was so painful that I cried each time I had to go, the therapist called the doctor and told him about my severe pain and he told her to put some sort of figure 8 bandage around the knee-cap. Driving home the pain became even worse so much so that I was about to go to the emergency room but I called the therapist instead and asked if I could remove the bandage. She told me to ice it for 20 minutes. Nothing improved, I knew something was up so I called the doctor and told him I couldn't do any more P.T. Then, and only then did he send me for a MRI, which showed a torn meniscus He called and very casually told me he was going to schedule for surgery. I decided then that he wasn't going to touch me and I went for a second & third opinion with the x-rays and MRI films. Both other orthopedic docs said I should have had an MRI immediately since there was no injury incident; I wouldn't have had to go through 3 weeks of torture. Additionally, when Dr.A told me about the surgery he "thought" he would be doing, he indicated he'd have to make three incisions, whereas the other two orthopedic docs indicated only two incisions. I wrote Dr. A a letter telling him why he wasn't doing my surgery and all the pain and suffering he put me through...do you think he responded to my letter, NO. Do you think he offered an apology, NO. It was like I didn't exist for him anymore since he wasn't going to get to operate on me. DO NOT GET NEAR THIS GUY. read more

I broke my wrist one morning and ended up in the ER. I was so lucky that Dr. Ashkanaze came by to set my wrist on his way to another surgery. I found his demeanor and bedside manners to be fantastic. He's very talented and with his help I did not need surgery. In fact the ER staff told me he did one of the best jobs they had ever seen. Here's where my frustration begins. I was told to call his office to make an appointment and that I needed to be seen 5 days later. I called that day even though I was in excruciating pain because I wanted to get an appointment for Monday. You cannot get through to the office personnel. The recording says to leave a message and someone will call you back so I did that. I did that the next day, the next day, and twice the next day. No calls back. I finally hit a different extension and begged the person to help me. When I finally came in for my appointment and mentioned this the front desk woman rolled her eyes back in apologetic manner. Looking over her shoulder to the person who apparently is in charge of picking up voicemail and not returning patient calls. The front office staff is horrible and enough to make me cringe and never come back. read more

Dr. Ashenaze performed a discectomy on both sides of my l4/l5. The disc had burst and was a mess on the mri. He took the time to discuss the dangers, trade offs, and what to expect. He didn't try to oversell me, as others did on getting highly invasive surgery. Day of was great. When I had a concern the following day,he made time for and saw me, and helped. It is now 4 days later and I am pretty much pain free. I was having trouble walking before. I am, compared to reading others experiences, amazed at the recovery, suggesting he had the magic touch during surgery. I severely shattered my knee last year and was taken to Mission Hospital in Laguna Beach. How lucky was I that Dr. Ashkenazi was on call! With the mess my knee was in it was remarkable what Dr. Ashkenazi was able to accomplish. Three different receptionists I spoke with on the phone were rude, dismissive and misinformed. I requested a workers comp appointment with Dr. Ashkenaze for my lower back. I was told that I had to get authorization from work comp before Dr. Ashkenaze would see me. Work comp had to send the authorization several times because Drs. office couldn't find the fax. When they finally received the authorization I was told that Dr. Ashkenaze "picks and chooses" his work comp patients. Without knowing anything more about my situation, apparently Dr. Ashkenaze declined to see me. Never heard of anything like this. I could have spent the 3 days searching for another doctor. read more

Dr. Ashkenaze performed surgery on both my husband and me many years ago, a few years apart. (spine) One thing we appreciated was that he didn't rush to surgery but made sure it was the right choice for our individual conditions. His precision as a surgeon and warm compassion as a human being made for an excellent experience for both of us. Years later, we are both healthy and active and grateful. An extremely frustrating experience. Dr. Ashkenaze performed emergency surgery on my son's arm on 7/22/19. He called me in Indianapolis both before and after the surgery to explain what was happening and was very calm and professional. However, when I flew out to hospital and met him personally, he was abrupt, dismissive, and even somewhat condescending toward both my son and to me, replying that he didn't "have a crystal ball" when I asked for clarification on possible scenarios following my son's second surgery. The hospital sent us home on 7/26/19 with a wound vac machine that immediately began beeping alarms that leakage was detected. Even before we left, the nurses couldn't detect a leak and told us to keep resetting the machine. That continued all night 7/26/19, all day and night 7/27/19, and continues to this moment. He had to be readmitted to hospital on 7/28/19 because of these continuous alarms, and all the surgeon has done is tell him to "deal" with them, and the worsening pain, until his next surgery on 7/30--instead of immediately removing the wound dressing to assess the cause of the blockage and maybe even get him in for surgery sooner. He will go into surgery tomorrow morning basically not having slept since Friday and with little regard for the pain he has expressed concern about to the doctor. Medical professionals should feel obligated to treat their patients with more care and compassion, regardless of the circumstances that landed the patients in their care to begin with. If you do not need surgery, do not go see this doctor. Ashkenaze makes his money doing surgery and that's all he cares about. I went in for a consultation for answers as to why I have chronic pain I was experiencing and numbness. He checked me to see if I would be a candidate for surgery, and I could have told you I was not. After he confirmed that he was pretty much done with the appointment and walked towards the door. I got no answers. He pretty much told me I had pain and that's about it. He told me to stop all treatment and take advil. Worst experience I have ever had. His staff is awful. I have never experienced such disrespect in my life. I'm sure he's a great surgeon but he isn't a caring doctor the slightest bit. I regret stepping foot in his office.
