Burg Schönburg has a hotel, a restaurant, and a museum on the grounds. We didn't go into the museum, but stayed at the hotel and ate at the restaurant, so the review will only cover those. The grounds sit ~100 meters above the town of Oberwesel itself, and the views of the church and Rhine river valley are amazing. The castle itself dates to the 10th century, but it was burned down in the 1600s and not restored until the late 1800s. It is a fantastically cool place to wander around, and in the spring and summer the huge gardens must be a great place to relax.
Hotel: This was the second coolest hotel we've ever stayed in (the treehouse in New Zealand will probably never be beaten). Just walking into the hotel from the parking lot will leave you slack-jawed. The front desk was quite friendly, and for once I was happy to have a bellhop show us to our room because we'd never have found it on our own! We sprung for Room 23, which is the highest room they have. It is on the fifth floor of the main tower which only has an elevator to the third floor, so don't book it or Room 22 unless you are comfortable walking up a spiral staircase. The room itself takes up the entire top floor of the tower, but it's not really very big. That said, the decorations feel authentic, the bed was very comfortable, and the little balcony has some amazing views, so overall a good choice for a romantic night if not a good idea for a family of four. We also appreciated the sitting room near the front desk, which had a nice little fire going in the evening to keep the chill away. The only downside is that with solid stone walls, wifi is a no-go; there is wired internet in each room and free wifi by the front desk to check your e-mail though.
Restaurant: A four-course prix-fixe dinner was included in our room, so while we didn't get to sample across the full range of the restaurant's dinner option, we did get a sampling. An amuse bouche of veal carpaccio was a nice touch, and the aioli didn't overwhelm the mild flavor of the veal. A trio of creamed cheeses over red lentils was a little bit richer as a starter, and a well-executed tomato consommé was a good palate cleanser before the main course (but serving it in a tea cup raised the question of whether to use spoon or just sip). The main course was a steak of veal saddle and an espagnole-like dark sauce, with vegetables in wine and cream sauce and some thin linguine noodles. The veal was cooked medium rare and was quite tender, as it should be, an the vegetables and noodles were both perfectly fine. Dessert was layered creme and almond crisps, with a scoop of coffee ice cream as well, and was nicely sized to end the meal without a crushing amount of sugar. I do wish we had dressed up a little nicer as the German guests were in blazers, but nice jeans and a button-down seemed to be fine.
Overall a fantastic stay, and worth the price for us. Next time we might stay someplace else just to try a different castle, but we would absolutely recommend Burg Schönburg to anyone looking for a great castle stay experience. read more
