    Our balcony view was amazing!

Went here to celebrate our wedding anniversary and it was truly and experience of a lifetime. Loved the peaceful atmosphere and amount of exploring that the castle and gardens offer. Plus adult sized chess game by the pond was fun (especially after those complimentary drinks in our room). The room was fantastic the view and setting of it felt like we were back in time - just a lord and lady staying in their summer castle and enjoying the scenery. I loved loved LOVED it. Breakfast included was a very nice add on and I'd highly recommend to sit on the patio for the best views. Staff has great English for my English speaking friends out there, so don't let a language barrier stop you from visiting - because there isn't one. Food at the bistro was delicious and I enjoyed it more than the one from the restaurant one. Mainly because we had to wait almost an hour between courses to finish our dinner - that was over 3 hours of just sitting. I understand that good food takes time but... still didn't let that run our stay there. Overall very good experience and I would love to come back.

Burg Schönburg has a hotel, a restaurant, and a museum on the grounds. We didn't go into the museum, but stayed at the hotel and ate at the restaurant, so the review will only cover those. The grounds sit ~100 meters above the town of Oberwesel itself, and the views of the church and Rhine river valley are amazing. The castle itself dates to the 10th century, but it was burned down in the 1600s and not restored until the late 1800s. It is a fantastically cool place to wander around, and in the spring and summer the huge gardens must be a great place to relax. Hotel: This was the second coolest hotel we've ever stayed in (the treehouse in New Zealand will probably never be beaten). Just walking into the hotel from the parking lot will leave you slack-jawed. The front desk was quite friendly, and for once I was happy to have a bellhop show us to our room because we'd never have found it on our own! We sprung for Room 23, which is the highest room they have. It is on the fifth floor of the main tower which only has an elevator to the third floor, so don't book it or Room 22 unless you are comfortable walking up a spiral staircase. The room itself takes up the entire top floor of the tower, but it's not really very big. That said, the decorations feel authentic, the bed was very comfortable, and the little balcony has some amazing views, so overall a good choice for a romantic night if not a good idea for a family of four. We also appreciated the sitting room near the front desk, which had a nice little fire going in the evening to keep the chill away. The only downside is that with solid stone walls, wifi is a no-go; there is wired internet in each room and free wifi by the front desk to check your e-mail though. Restaurant: A four-course prix-fixe dinner was included in our room, so while we didn't get to sample across the full range of the restaurant's dinner option, we did get a sampling. An amuse bouche of veal carpaccio was a nice touch, and the aioli didn't overwhelm the mild flavor of the veal. A trio of creamed cheeses over red lentils was a little bit richer as a starter, and a well-executed tomato consommé was a good palate cleanser before the main course (but serving it in a tea cup raised the question of whether to use spoon or just sip). The main course was a steak of veal saddle and an espagnole-like dark sauce, with vegetables in wine and cream sauce and some thin linguine noodles. The veal was cooked medium rare and was quite tender, as it should be, an the vegetables and noodles were both perfectly fine. Dessert was layered creme and almond crisps, with a scoop of coffee ice cream as well, and was nicely sized to end the meal without a crushing amount of sugar. I do wish we had dressed up a little nicer as the German guests were in blazers, but nice jeans and a button-down seemed to be fine. Overall a fantastic stay, and worth the price for us. Next time we might stay someplace else just to try a different castle, but we would absolutely recommend Burg Schönburg to anyone looking for a great castle stay experience.

We had a great corner room 2 floors up so we had a nice view of the Rhine and the ancient city wall. This was our first stop in Germany on our first visit to the country,. The bathroom was a bit different. The shower is kind of cosy (the doors close into the corner furthest into the room and if not closed completely water gets all over the floor). Everything is tiled so it's not a problem. The room is large and comfortable. The bed is low and very firm but since we'd flown over from the US the previous night, it was perfectly comfortable to get a full night's sleep. This hotel is located at the north end of the town of Oberwesel so it is a great starting point to start walking to look at the ancient wall along the river or explore the town. We walked along the wall (it's got great walkways), up in the towers, then through town. When we returned we decided to dine in the restaurant for dinner. We were tired so close was better. As we were seated and placed our order, we noticed that all the other patrons were speaking German which is always a good sign. We didn't notice any foreign tourists (they're usually somewhat obvious). We ordered traditional German food and it was really tasty. Same for breakfast in the morning. Lots of Germans and good authentic (so I would assume) food. The family hosts were friendly and kind. The son was our server for dinner and spoke great English. The mother and (maybe) daughter took care of breakfast and spoke less well but still did a great job. We loved our visit here and would defiantly return again.

I think it's a fair assessment after recently spending three nights in the hotel. Well, not really at the hotel - I actually got a full apartment for three nights, with a California King, full kitchen, dining area, and living room. The room was massive, especially the bathroom which was more American size than European size. All this was reasonably priced for less than $100 a night, located in the heart of Bacharach. Parking is taken care of, with the hotel owning several lots around town. The service was excellent - they speak English very well, was very accommodating, and even translated the Rüdesheim Weinfest website for us. You cannot ask for a better hotel experience than at this place. Sure the rooms are nice, but is the restaurant worth going to? This was another outstanding experience. My girlfriend were able to eat here only one night, but would've loved to eat here again if we had the time. The exterior of the restaurant is beautiful and so German. I ordered the Jagerschnitzel (which included fries and a side salad) and my girlfriend ordered one of their massive salads. Both dishes were delectable - I mean just look at the beautiful pictures. The juicy Jagerschnitsel was complemented with the thick and flavorful gravy sauce, which was perfect for dipping fries in after and complemented nicely with a light side salad. My girlfriend's salad was just a menagerie of flavors - croutons, romaine lettuce, cherry tomatoes, blueberries, grapes and nuts in a maybe-it's-vinaigrette-maybe-it's-heaven dressing. We also ordered a bottle of Weingut Dr. Randolf Kauer 2014 Riesling which is harvest and made locally. Here I was thinking all Rieslings were sweet and we ended up getting a very balanced and immensely drinkable wine. Our entire meal, including the bottle of wine, was about 50 euros. Overall, from hotels to restaurant, Hotel Altkölnischer Hof has their act together. I couldn't recommend it highly enough.
