Hotel lobby was clean and they had candy, water bottles, and fresh cookies out for guests to enjoy. You could borrow an appliance for your room if needed. There was a little food pantry stocked to the brim if you needed a quick snack or forgot to pack something. Yogurt, apples, oranges, coffee, water, and hot cocoa were all free. Our room was clean and tidy. It came fully stocked with utensils, dishes, cookware, paper towels, dish soap/dishwasher pods, a coffee maker, fridge, and microwave. The hotel was also pet friendly, which was a major plus since we had our two dogs with us. There was a nice little gym section which was connected to the laundry facility and pool. We didn't use the gym or laundry during this stay, but our kids loved the pool. The water was a little cold for my liking, but the kids didn't seem to mind. The area was handicap accessible, clean, and stocked with fresh towels. There was a lovely outdoor patio with heat lamps, tables, and a few grills. Around back, there was a dog walk area stocked with poop bags and a trash can. To my surprise, there were also children's toys-- two cozy coupes, a slide, some scooters, and balance bikes. These people really have it together! If we ever go back to Carlsbad, I'd stay there again!

It was frustrating because only one person originally was at the front desk and didn't even acknowledge me or the fact that I only needed the card key and room number because I checked in online. The other problem was checking out. When I went online, it asked if I wanted a late checkout time at no extra charge. That was great because my son was still sleeping at 10 and I wanted to give him extra time to rest. This was at 10 am when I requested it but at 1045 housekeeping knocked so we rushed to check out at 1100. It was a little hectic but we were able to do it. The problem was our request for a late checkout never came back and just said pending. It wasn't till after we rushed to checkout and we were on the road that the email finally came in at 1130 saying it was denied. Again, lack of communication and late responses led to the low rating.

This event has been named one of the "Top-100 must-see events in North America" by the American Bus Association every year since 1996. The Good: *Good wholesome family fun *Prices for tickets were pretty reasonable ($22/adults $18/kids), and it goes to support the event and the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce. *The boat ride itself was really enjoyable and seemed a bit longer than the forty minutes advertised, which was fine by me. *Once they started to load the boats, the staff was very organized. PRO TIP: Be the last one on the boat so you'll get a front-row, unobstructed view seats. The Meh: *They could use some better signage on what to do once you show up. Everyone is just kind of standing around unsure of what to do. *There's supposedly crafts, drinks, and food at the Pecos Christmas Village, but we didn't see anything beyond some souvenirs at the check-in ticket booth. However, we did do the ride a few days after Xmas, so it's possible it was done for the season? The Ugly: *Parents that can't control their kids really know how to spread the cheer. -_- TLDR: Great place for wholesome family fun for kids and adults of all ages. This 40-minute boat ride on the calm waters of the Pecos River is a holiday lights and decorations tour of mostly residential homes. These homeowners do amazing & creative decorating - and many are fairly large houses. Reservations must be made online in advance & sell out at peak hours beginning with 6:30PM on up to the last tour as late as 9:30PM on the weekends. They do not run the boats on Christmas Eve. Bundle up! It gets very chilly on the water in the desert. Kiddos are required to wear life jackets. I suggest getting to your tour 15-20 minutes prior so you can find parking, use the restroom, and/or get a refreshment.
