I love the smell of this place. I almost wish I smoked a pipe, because the loose pipe tobacco has such an amazing aroma. But I suspect, as I find with herbal teas, that it smells better than it tastes anyway. There's a real feel of exclusivity and premiere quality in Burlington-on-Whyte. Everything's dark wood, like an English pub, and a hookas set up in the window like a welcome door mat. You can buy every kind of tobacco imaginable here. I'm not a connoisseur, as you can tell, but I know variety when I see it. There are the cheap, booze-tipped cigars for a New Year's eve treat or your top-quality Monte Cristo for distinguished puffing. There's a big humidor filled with boxes of cigars in every price range, and there are 40 or 50 glass jars filled with loose tobacco behind the counter, like you'd see in a tea shop. If you're looking for a cigar-related gift, you can get cigar cutters, mini humidors, hookah (a bong-type contraption used to smoke tobacco, among other things, I'm sure), and every conceivable kind of pipe. This is really a one-of-a-kind shop in Edmonton. It is all things pipes, cigars, and tobacco. It even smells unique in there. I am not a smoker, but I stopped in to check out the beautiful selection of empty cigar boxes - they make excellent containers for pens and other random items. And even though I do not partake, I love looking at the all of the different kinds of pipes. Why is it that we love the things we can't have? I guess it's that "grass-is-greener" mentality - the things that are taboo to us seem the sexiest. But in this case, I don't think it's unhealthy, and I believe I'm right to covet that which I am denied on many occasions. I love Cuban cigars. And Cuban rum for that matter. And because of some age-old grudge, which really no longer f*cking applies, I can't get them in the U-S-of-A. And it annoys the ever-loving shit out of me. So every time I travel outside of the US, I find my way to a tobacconist and score (not with my money, if the US government is reading this) myself some of the finest hand-rolled tobacco to grace the face of this earth. On a recent trip to Canada, I found my beloved brown beauties at Burlington-on-Whyte, which stocks an impressive collection of vintage, regional and specialty selections. The staff at Burlington are incredibly friendly and helpful, willing to provide suggestions for those of us who don't know the whole Cuban portfolio, since our stupid and outdated governmental policies won't allow. Of course you'll pay a pretty penny for this selection and knowledge - prices much higher than I'm used to forking over for similar product. But these babies are well-kept and cared for, and sublimely curated, so that probably does add some value. I was here just the other day. Coming from a very well embraced cuban background, I'd like to think cigars are right up my alley. It's a small shop, so I wasn't surprised they didn't carry my favorite Romeo y Julieta cigar. That being said, they do have a decent selection for their size. I went with a wide Churchill. Their cigars (or at least the ones I smoked) were authentic hand rolled cubanos. Easily standing out from the imitation Dominicans I've run into. Their prices did seem a little steep - Nothing unreasonable, but not exactly a bargain either. I got the impression they treated everything like a high end, one of a kind cigar. I met four of their staff while I was there. The owner certainty did seem like he knew what he was talking about. He only really left his desk for the more veteran of his customers though. The socks and sandals combination seemed to give him this presence. Another tier of man entirely. I would definitely say he was "Badass." His 'Assistant' was the one I spent the most time with. Neatly dressed, with an odd sense of humor - He didn't smile very much, and didn't seem to be quite happy he was there. His knowledge of cigars I thought was fair. The one suggestion he did make however was a rather over priced, low end cigar. It made for a very mediocre smoke. They have some nice humidors for anyone looking to buy boxes. Outstanding prices. I'll be buying one next time I'm there. Overall I'd say this was a decent store. I would suggest knowing what you want before going. If you're looking for a cigar shop in Edmonton, by all means give this place a chance. They do seem to genuinely care about their shop and business, and are by no means an inferior store. read more

There are cigar shops in town, but while Burlington sells cigars, it's really the last true tobacconists in town. Despite the anti-smoking hysteria, this is one place that celebrates all things tobacco. You open the door and you're immediately greeted with the earthy aromatic aroma of pipe tobacco. I think this is Edmonton's last bastion for the pipe smoker. If you indulge in a occasional smoke, be it pipe, cigar or hookah, it's nice to know that there is still somewhere to go for the good stuff with friendly knowledgeable people to help you out. read more

Just new to pipe smoking and they are have a very well stocked shop. Many different brands of pipes and cigars and quite a large selection of loose tobacco. The staff were pleasant and helpful, creating an atmosphere of a place you wouldn't mind just hanging out in. Weekends are a madhouse so I would recommend a weekday. read more

While this inept, rude and awkward person could have been helpful, he instead flaunted his impressive (to himself) knowledge of everything "cigar." Go elsewhere. I am by no means an expert on anything to do with tobacco. I needed a gift for a friend's birthday and suspected that he might shop here, and decided to give it a go. Ron was absolutely wonderful! I told him that I was a complete Newb, what I wanted to spend and some of the taste preferences of the birthday boy in question. Ron was knowledgeable and super fun. He was able to give me a few cigars to choose from. Burglington has quite a range of cigars and tabacco available as well as everything you could ever think of to be able to smoke it. There was some very nice pipes there that reminded me a lot of my grandfather. The humidors are well maintained with humidifiers etc. If you don't have a humidifier at home to put your newly purchased cigars in to, they have water pillows to help keep the tabacco moist. Nice little shop that's very easy to miss if you're driving down Whyte Ave. Features tobacco products ranging from pipe tobacco to various types of cigars. As a cigar smoker, I like the selection they have since they feature cigars from Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Nicaragua, etc in various price ranges. From the limited time that I've been smoking cigars, they have a pretty decent selection although Hav-a-cigar near Calgary Trail has probably twice as many if not more brands. The only real blemish I feel is the prices of the cigars, they can be on the high end even for the non-premium cigars. Small cubans can start at $10 whereas the same cigar can be found a few dollars cheaper elsewhere. Also the staff can be a little stand offish sometimes and giving rather typical suggestions for cigars (they point at the more expensive ones). Overall it's a good place to go if you're on whyte ave and have an inkling to try something new and it's usually where I go when I'm between orders of cigars from online sources. read more

These guys are nerdy about tobacco and pipes and they will happily sit you down and give you a lesson on how to pack and clean a bowl, which is essential when you are a novice and have no idea where to begin. There is no other place in Alberta I would rather browse when catering to my vice of smoking a pipe. A large variety of jarred tobacco blends line the wall behind the counter, with tins intermingled; and a wall of quality pipes for all price points stretches from near the entrance to the humidor. I understand they are big on pipes and pipe tobacco, but I have only ever bought cigars and accessories, so my comments should be regarded only insofar as cigars. They may seem knowledgeable if you haven't experienced better, but every recommendation was a miss. I got worthless cigars for a lot of money, I'm sure for no fault of the cigars themselves, but for what I was looking for versus what I ended up with based on their guidance. I like the accessories I bought here; just right for me at modest prices, though they could have offered to replace a certain pre-filled propylene glycol humidifier that wasn't pre-filled. read more

As for the service, I have no qualms; depending on who you get you can get an enthusiastic bit of help, or a droning hipster wannabe. This is my first review on yelp. I found this place using yelp. I was a little nervous to go in but the staff was very warm and welcoming. They all shook my hand with a grip that would of really impressed my late grandfather. The staff helped me find exactly what I wanted. (A very nice pipe) for a good price. After showing me a lot of different tobaccos they had to offer, they sat me down for a very thorough lesson on how to use the pipe. This was seriously one of the neatest experiences I have had in a while. I left very happy. They probably just earned a customer for life. read more

Good product. I particularly like their selection of pipes and pipe tobacco. In terms of service, if you ask a question you will get an accurate answer, so expertise isn't a problem. Nevertheless, the social awkwardness factor is high with the employees. I have been in three times and on each occasion, the employees watched me like a hawk, either out of paranoia or too much eagerness to please. It made me feel on edge. A guy came in to buy a cigar while I was there a week or so ago, and they watched him as well. The guy made a pretty funny joke and the employees tittered nervously. Super odd behaviour, especially from tobacconists who are usually some of the warmest and most self-aware people I've met. These guys are more like philosophy nerds who happen to run a tobacco store. Still gets three stars for the quality of the products, but I wouldn't hang out at a place like this. You go in, get what you want, and leave. One exception is the older guy, who seems to have a better handle on social norms. read more

I was visiting from Ontario and looked up a place where I can purchase pipes. Now I got the usual head shops and such. But this shop came up on several searches and I am glad it did. I was looking for 3 matching pipes in the 75 dollar range and in most shops that would be impossible, but not here. The staff were great pointing me to the pipes which were in my price range and suggeting the ones they had doubles and possibly triples of. I felt like I was at home and well informed. The selection is as good as the shops I visit in Nashville, Montreal, Toronto and many others around North America. When I move to Alberta I will be shopping here often. read more
