Is this the best Mexican you ever had? No.. Not even in the city. Its basically the mexican version…read moreof pub food mostly. The Appetizer menu is solid, they have some nice variation in their dinner menu and a few non mexican items for the picky folks. I think if I had 2 major complaints they would be that 1) the food is actually surprisingly tasteless. Not Spicy, which was fine.. but was actually kinda bland.. and 2) When we got our meals they had obviously been left under a warmer for too long and were overheated. The tortillas on my fish tacos were crispy instead of soft and the rice had dried out on the surface. The Burrito my date ordered looked great but you get no sour cream or anything with the meal so it ends up as a dry meal with overcooked looking beef. My Fish Tacos were beautiful to look at, little slices of Jalapeno under the fish gave you a big surprise but the cole slaw that was on the fish tastes like absolutely nothing... Just cabbage. Not impressed. Overall.. I wouldn't go back.. But only because there are other, and better options for Mexican in St John's. The food wasn't bad.. it was just boring. One major plus.. the Service was fantastic. Friendly, quick, and efficient. Oh and they brew their own ice tea. Its not that Nestea stuff most places have. So if you are expecting sweet tea you will get a surprise at your first sip.

I looked for my profile on Yelp and it seemed to missing a lot of reviews I have no idea why but…read morehere is my review. To begin, I love Mexican food. It's usually very simple and very delicious. I have been to many cantinas in my travels. The atmosphere appeared to be pleasant and we were greeted when we arrived. That is where it went down hill!! We sat down and ordered a beverage. A soda and a water. The water had a strange taste. Most likely just tap water, that was Luke warm and had a strange taste. The soda was a soda! Looked though the full menu and browsed the lunch menu that was offered. The menu for one was not clear as one that you might expect from a Mexican Restaurant. We wanted a simple lunch, tacos . It seemed to lack a good definition of what they were, so I asked for clarification. Chicken .. Ok. Beef? Ground beef. No steak tacos, carne Asada .. What, el pastor? What? Veggie and a chilli taco. Confusion was setting in. Soft tacos... No!! Hard shell, store bought. I looked for an alternate lunch on the menu. More confusion! The menu was really lacking anything Mexican or should I say authentic Mexican or even Tex Mex. I looked around to make sure that I walked into the correct door. We verified and we were here. (Burrito for $20.00 wow that must be an amazing Burrito. Tacos that were not tacos for an inflated price) I wanted something for lunch that was Authentic. I asked for input from our server, with little guidance except for a feeble attempt for an upsell to their dinner menu, I just wanted lunch. I had that feeling of wanting to run and not look back, but I had to give it a try. We tried the tacos and another dish that looked to have a carne asada vibe. Not so much .The tacos were displayed horrible with ground beef, no salsa's or hot sauce as condiments or extras on the side as to garnish.... These are tacos correct??!! The other dish was very small but it did have a Carne Asada meat... Sort of but with raisins. Confused again. The refried beans were very salty and the rice very bland. This place is not Tex mex or Mexican by any means. Should change the name to something else and not mislead the public. I felt a little embarrassed. In name only is this place Mexican. I would never recommend or try and explain my opinion of this place ever again. Just say No! esto no es un restaurante mexicano. no es auténtico para decir lo menos. Taco Bell es más auténtico. ¡no está bien!

The unique selections made for my all time favorite salad. I most recently tried the pre-fabricated brown rice bowl designed by Freshi "Oxaco" with falafel - I'm flat-out hooked.. I will be trying lots more off their menu. This week I bought 2 bowls to split with me and my 2 parents, enough for 3.. and they absolutely loved the rice bowl and kale/spinach salads I brought home. They and I will be back! :) If you get the 'make your own salad' be sure you try the lime cilantro vinaigrette dressing!!! The falafel meat option is also amazing. The ingredients are always fresh, like the name implies! You're not getting Subway style tomatoes and lettuce here, if you know what I mean. I've tried their pre-made drinks as well (Mighty Detox (green one))... this truly tastes like you're eating healthy. When I'm feeling blah after having a weekend full of horrible food choices I pick one up on Monday. Their smoothies are also delicious, they're on the simple side, but they don't taste like you're eating a sugared up excuse for a health-smoothie.

Whether at our home base in the Halifax area or abroad, my wife and I enjoy relaxing over a coffee,…read moreadult beverage or tasty food, and it was in Bannerman that we were hoping to find all three. We swung by in the early afternoon, just after the lunch crowd at most places would be easing off, but Bannerman was impressively going strong from when we arrived through to our departure! We were seated at one of their picnic-esque tables near the back of the room, taking in the high ceilings and the lovely work done to reuse this historic fire hall. I snagged a half pint of one of their light and refreshing lagers, while my wife partook in their caffeinated offerings. It's nice to be able to get both, and the warm, communal feeling of the space was a nice contrast to the cold and clinical vibe that can sometimes come with Third Wave places. Wanting to refuel after a dizzying hike on the North Head Trail, we ordered the mushroom flatbread, steamed buns, and pierogis. My wife's mushroom flatbread arrived first, with the not-pizza leaning heavily into savoury, earthy flavours with sauteed, locally harvested mushrooms, shaved truffles, and smoked gouda. While I fundamentally disagree with arugula being on pizzas and their brethren, its peppery bite helped cut through the otherwise rich flatbread. While I certainly shared my two apps, I was glad to have them mostly to myself! The food in general isn't inexpensive at Bannerman and $17 for two steamed buns was a bit of a pill to swallow, but the quality was thankfully there to back its price tag. Succulent, shredded pork was jam-packed into the pleasantly-chewy, folded buns, and topped with the contrasting tastes and textures of slices of white onion, crispy onions, and micro greens. The pierogi of the day had a lentil filling, and the savoury legumes lent themselves well to these deep-fried dumplings. The ultra-crispy exterior easily gave way to the doughy interior and the lentils within. Almost stealing the show was the onion confit sour cream, whose velvety smooth airiness had the perfect amount of caramelized onion flavour. Bannerman could/should sell this stuff on its own! Even after just one visit, it's easy to see how Bannerman's combination of craft beer,top-notch coffee, creative bites, and a beautiful space in an award-winning adaptive reuse has made for a place that's more than the sum of its parts, and has become a destination for locals and tourists alike.

The menu is on the larger side for a place of Portage's caliber and reputation, with several snack-sized starters and veggie-based dishes, and a leaner variety of proteins and desserts on offer. You know you're likely in for an excellent meal when it's hard to choose what to get, but after some deliberation, my wife and I landed on a handful - smoked olives, the cleverly-named Tongue and Cheek, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower souvlaki, and fingerling potatoes. Note that you can conveniently get half-sized portions of most dishes, although we, somewhat greedily, did not. Unsurprisingly, the smoked olives arrived right out of the gate. The plump green olives came as advertised and while you wouldn't know it from looking at them, tasted more like smoke than olive - and I was all for it! I'm slowly converting to olives, although it's generally only at nicer restaurants and not the olives that come out of obscenely large buckets/cans that get slopped on mediocre pizzas and salads. The cauliflower souvlaki started off our string of excellent veggie dishes. I wasn't sure what the portioning or presentation would be like for these, but they were all a generous size for two people to share, and while they were plated with consideration, it wasn't so much "haute cuisine" as it was "piles of delicious food with complementary garnishes". I was a bit surprised that the cauliflower was served at room temperature, but the charred cruciferous veg still packed a lot of flavour into each tender-crisp bite. Paired up with pickled dates, yogurt, and fresh dill and mint, the dish hit a lot of notes - savoury, lightly sweet, and tart and bright vegetal freshness. On deck were the fingering potatoes. Loaded up with sauteed onions, scrunchion-esque bits of pork belly, and a blessedly-conservative amount of Dijon, this was a dish that harkens to a lot of continental European dishes. The execution of the relatively simple ingredients is where it stood out though, with firm-but-tender potatoes that had hints of sweetness and umami from their toppings, and the crisp bits of pork belly brought some textural contrast to this comfort food classic. The dishes were coming hard and fast at this point with the broccoli, Brussels sprouts and (cod) Tongue and Cheek showing up in quick succession. Brussels sprouts have become a family sight on contemporary restaurant menus in the past 15-ish years, and the crispy, charred veg got the Boomer parent treatment, although melted Cheez Whiz was replaced by a much more natural Mornay sauce. I'm not jaded enough yet by their ubiquity to bemoan the delicious execution of these sprouts, and the cheesy goodness of the Mornay mellowed out the sharper edges of this infamous vegetable. A surprise hit was the broccoli - with velvety smooth and lightly salty ricotta, fresh micro greens and a not-insubstantial punch of heat from chili crisp, our third cruciferous vegetable of the night took top honours of the three, IMO. The Tongue and Cheek is an amusingly tongue-in-cheek play on words, using two cuts of cod that have become local delicacies. Each was fried in a light and airy batter that was only slightly heavier than a proper tempura, with a perfectly generous amount of salt. The tongues were a bit more toothsome, but still tender, while the cheeks almost melted in your mouth. They're one of the more pricey starters, but absolutely worth it. After this sizeable feast, dessert was not on the table, figuratively or literally. Service was spot-on and friendly, without the almost clinical coldness that can come with the precision that some fine dining places have. Portage is understandably representing St John's on Canada's Top 100 list with its deliberate, but unpretentious menu that will leave you wanting more and loosening your belt at the same time.

Please note that I also highly recommend reservations as it's not a huge dining space and because the food is so good, they do get busy. We started with the seafood sampler platter. So wonderful. And then we shared the Halibut, rice and spinach/fiddleheads with shrimp hollandaise (which were a fantastic complement to each other). Only one thing we did not like (it was not the fault of the restaurant, but our table for 2 was flanked by a table for 8. We don't mind that generally but 2 of the party were children who initially were running around and flinging themselves on the banquette seating for the first half of the meal. I started to wonder if I was going to end up with one of them in our laps. Fortunately they settled down at some point). Despite all this I would go back in a heartbeat.
